Martha Barrier

Martha Barrier, 68, of Pecos, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Regency Hospital in Odessa.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 31, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

She was born July 7, 1936, in Mart, was a retired cook and a member of the Pentecostal Church.

Barrier was preceded in death by her husband, L.C. Barrier and parents R.D. and Willie Wright.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Terry of Pecos, Shirley Barrier of Waco; three brothers, Eddy Ferguson of Pecos, Willie Lee and Wallace Wright of Houston; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Brenda Fuentes

Brenda Fuentes, 20, of Pecos, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at her residence.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Wayne Sparkman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

She was born June 29, 1984, in Pecos, was a student, a lifelong Pecos resident and a member of Church of Latter Day Saints.

Fuentes was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Rodney Sparkman, Sr. and paternal grandparents, Santos and Vivian Fuentes.

Survivors included her fiancé Samuel Gonzales of Pecos; her parents, Oscar and Pat Fuentes of Pecos; two brothers, Jonathan Fuentes of Nashville, Tenn., Brian Fuentes of Pecos; one sister, Jennifer Fuentes of Pecos; her grandparents Francis and Armando Esparza of Pecos and great-grandparents, Aurelio and Manuela Acosta of Pecos. Pecos Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rupert Adkins

Services are incomplete for Rupert Adkins, 76, of Pecos, who died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at his residence.

Jesusita Chavez

Jesusita Chavez, 78, of Monahans, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Midland Memorial Hospital.

Mass was held at 2 p.m., Monday, July 19, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Pecos, had lived in Monahans for many years, was a homemaker and a Catholic.

Survivors include two sons, Arturo Chavez of Pecos, Hector Chavez of San Angelo; three daughters, Eva Chavez of Pecos, Gloria Holguin of San Angelo, Anita Chavez of Monahans; one brother, Feliciano “Felix” Lara of Midland; one sister, Juanita Lara of Pecos; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Oscar Lease

Oscar William Lease III, 51, of Pecos, died Thursday, July 15, 2004. Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 19, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Greer Willis officiating. Burial was in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 20, 1952, in Houston, was a registered nurse at Reeves County Hospital and a Catholic.

Lease was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar William Lease II and Marion Kelly Lease; two brothers, Mark and Daniel Lease.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Lease of Pecos; three daughters, Tara Marie and Rachael Kelly Lease of Tulsa, Okla., Kelly Lee Ann Lease of Pecos; one son, William Lease of Pecos and one sister, Marta Warnke of Iowa.

Martha Soto

Martha Soto, 57, of Pecos, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Reeves Count Hospital. Mass was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 21, at Assemblia Apostolica with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 28, 1947, in San Carlos, Chih., was a longtime Pecos resident, a housewife and a member of Assemblia Apostolica.

Survivors include her husband, Celedonio Soto; two sons, Omar and Auden Soto of Pecos; three daughters, Julie Soto, Luz Villescas and Morayma Baeza of Pecos; two brothers, Margarito and Lorenzo Garcia; two sisters, Wenceslada Garcia, Valentina Gonzales and seven grandchildren.

Peaceful Garden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Sadie Mildred Wallace Sadie Mildred Wallace, 98, of Boone, IA., died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Eastern Star Home in Boone. Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 22, at the First Christian Church of Ames with Rev. Kay Scott officiating. Burial was Wednesday, June 23, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, IA. She was born Oct. 7, 1905, in McCallsburg, IA, to Marshall and Bertha Olson Pearson, after 35 years in Pecos, moved to Ames in 1968 before moving to the Eastern Star Home in Boone in 1994. She was a homemaker. Wallace was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Wallace. Survivors include three sons, Lauren “Duke” Hobbs of College Station, John Henry Wallace, Jr., of Ashland, KY, David Marshall Wallace of Spokane, WA; one daughter Sara Wallace Pitcher of Chicago, IL;10 grandsons, one granddaughter; eight great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to First Christian Church (611 Clark Ave. Ames, Iowa 50010) or the Eastern Star Home (715 W. 3rd, Boone, IA 50036). Adams Funeral Home, Ames, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Betty L. Baker

Betty Louvenia Baker, 73, of Shattuck, Okla., died Monday, July 12, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 16, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Higgins, Tx., with the Rev. Jerry Don Cheshire and the Rev. Nancy Moore officiating. Burial was in the Higgins Cemetery in Higgins.

Baker spent her childhood years in Barstow, moved to Higgins in 1968 where she worked at Red Bud Grocery for many years and in 1980 moved to Eufaula Oklahoma. Later she moved back to Higgins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, her husband, H. Dee Baker and one step-son.

Survivors include one son Allen Baker of Higgins; one step-daughter, Debbie McCurdy; one step-son, Ralph Baker of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Jim McAnally of Dallas, Ernie McAnally of Amarillo; two sisters, Minnie Shults of Tucson, Ariz., Bobbie Hopper of Keller; one sister-in-law, Sharlet McAnally of Agle; seven grandchildren and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Josh Habekott Scholarship Fund in care of the Higgins High School.

Pilar Contreras

Pilar J. Contreras, 66, of Pecos, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at his residence.

Mass was held at 2 p..m. Saturday, July 17, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 12, 1937, in Ojinaga, Chih. Mexico, had been a butcher, was disabled, a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic.

Contreras was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul Contreras. Survivors include his wife Maria “Jimmie” Contreras of Pecos; five sons, Amando Contreras of Midland, Ruben, Pilar “Junga” Jr. and Hector Contrreras of Pecos, Albert Contreras of Abilene; three daughters, Diana Ortega of Pecos, Lori Natividad of Wickett, Rosa Nunez of Monahans; one brother, Marcos Contreras of Austin; three sisters, Alicia Carrasco, Lupe Carrasco of Bakersfield, Calif., Crissy Meza of Pecos; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ila Smith

Ila Smith, 83, of Pecos, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Pecos Nursing Home. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 16, at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery with L.H. Woodard officiating.

She was born May 21, 1920, in Big Lake, was a longtime Pecos resident and a homemaker.

Survivors include two sisters, Verlie Hurley of Pecos and Rachel Wallis of Monahans.

Virlee Terry

Virlee Terry, 72, of Pecos, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Alliance Hospital in Odessa. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Monday, July 19, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Fred Domingues officiating and R.L. Pendleton assisting. Burial was in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

She was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Wharton, was a school cafeteria employee and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Terry was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Terry, Sr.; four sons, Tom Jr., Edward, Earl and Early Terry; one brother, Robert McNeil and her parents, Johnny Pendleton and Alberta McNiel.

Survivors include four sons, Larry Terry of Austin, David, Kenneth and Willie Ray Terry of Pecos; two daughters, Shirley Coleman of Austin, Linda Terry of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, R.L. Pendleton of Bakersfield, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ofelia Valeriano

Funeral services were held on July 12 for Ofelia Valeriano, 55, who died on July 9, 2004 at her home in Pecos. Rosary services were held at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel on July 10, with funeral services at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Odessa under the direction of Fr. Joseph Uecker. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery in Odessa.

Valeriano was born on Aug. 24, 1948 in Vado De Pienda, Chih., Mex., and was a longtime Pecos resident and a Catholic. She was proceeded in death by her father, Jesus Acosta, and one brother, Emilio Acosta.

Survivors include her husband, Gregorio Valeriano of Pecos; her mother, Manuela Acosta of Odessa; two sons, Joel Valeriano and Sammy Valeriano, both of Odessa; three daughters, Sonia Montano and Josie Valeriano of Pecos and Leslie Hidalgo of Lubbock; three brothers, Jesus Acosta, Jr., and Rigoberto Acosta of Odessa and Hector Acosta of Monahans; two sisters, Candaleria Baeza of Pecos and Otilia Zapata of Austin; 114 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Reta Severs

Reta Cunningham Reagan Severs, age 82, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, in Austin, Texas. She was born August 5, 1921, to Pearl and Otto Hillman in Brown County, Texas. She was reared by her grandparents and allended school in Early, Texas. She was preceded in death by her first husband of thirty nine years, Clarence Reagan; her husband of ten years, Les severs; her parents, Pearl and Otto Hillman, and grandparents, Maude and David Cunningham.

Survivors include: her daughters, Darlene Reagan Davis of Austin, TX.; Jan Reagan Guerin of Phoenix, AR; son, Lee Reagan of Buffalo Gap, TX; step-daughters, Jean Sellers Castro of Garland, TX.; Janet Clemente of Richmond, TX.; one step-son, Dan Severs of Euless, TX. Retal is also survived by her brothers; Otto Cunningham and Melvin Cunningham of El Paso, TX and many nieces and nephews.

Visitations will be Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Davis Funeral Home in Brownwood, TX. From 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be Friday, July 16, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Davis Morris Funeral Home with Pastor Carol Nichols officiating. Burial will follow at Jenkins Springs Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Chandler Davis, Bill Guerin, Jack Davis and Edward Clemente.

Virlee Terry

Virlee Terry, age 72, dies on Tuesday, July 13, 2004. Pecos Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Services are pending.

Harrold Harris

Harrold Bell Harris, 65, of Richardson, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, in Richardson. A church service was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 6, at the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel, Muleshoe with Kerry Winders of Earth, Tx., officiating. Burial was in Labuddie Cemetery, in Lazbuddie, Tx.

Harris was born March 12, 1939, in Frog Hop, Lamar County, lived in Richardson for 20 years moving from Pecos, was a member of the Baptist Church and an ordained minister with the World Christianship Ministries. He was also a member of the Rosicrucian Order since 1994 and an officer with the Salvation Army. He had served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a security guard and had owned his own security company in the past.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Sue Chancellor and Juanita Harris; three brothers, Andrew Woodson Harris, Lonnie Gaylan Harris and Clydoda Harris.

Survivors include one daughter, Melissa Smith of Lazbuddie; one son, Danny Harris of Kermit; one sister, Loray Davis of Garland and five grandchildren.

Joyce Burkhalter

Joyce Burkhalter, 75, of Pecos, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, in El Paso.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 6, at the Church of Christ, 4th and Bois D’Arc, Pecos, with Fred Dominguez officiating.

She was born June 30, 1929, in Pecos, was a longtime Pecos resident, a former telephone operator and a member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Abe, Jimmy and Dickie Wadley. Survivors include one son, Glen Burkhalter of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Kim Chalfant of El Paso; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dale Toone

Dale Toone, 78, of Saragosa, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at his residence. A memorial service was held at 9 a.m., Saturday, July 3, at First Baptist Church in Pecos, with Greer Willis officiating. Burial was in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Waxahachie, was a retired farmer, had served in the Air Force, was a longtime Saragosa resident and a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Toone of Saragosa; two sons, Billy Toone of Flowermound, George Toone of Austin; two brothers, Jimmy Toone of Pecos, H.H. Herb Toone of Uvalde; two grandchildren, Justin and Lauren Toone of Flowermound. Pecos Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Chavez

Richard Chavez, 47, of Pecos, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at his residence. Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 3, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born July 27, 1956, in Pecos, was a longtime Pecos resident and a Catholic. Chavez was preceded in death by one son, Isaac Chavez; two brothers, David Chavez and Jose Luis Chavez.

Survivors include his wife, Noemi Chavez of Lubbock; his parents, Petra and Dolores Chavez of Pecos; one son, David Chavez of Pecos; four daughters, Michelle Chavez, Sydney Chavez of Pecos, Patricia Avalos and Teresa Garza of Lubbock; one brother, Hector Chavez of Lubbock; five sisters, Lou Aldarete, Patricia Chavez of Lubbock, Margaret Perez, Rose Mary Galindo and Dolores Munoz of Pecos and seven grandchildren.

Jefferson Davis

Jefferson Will “J.W.” Davis, 91, of Pecos, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Reeves County Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 3, at Pioneer Cemetery with J.E. McCormick officiating.

Davis was preceded in death by his wife Thelma Davis; his parents William and Ola Davis and one brother, Bowie Davis.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Bobbie Jo Johnson

Bobbie Jo Johnson, 37, of Pecos, died Monday, June 28, 2004, while visiting her parents and daughters in Archer, Fla.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 4, at Heirs Funeral Home in Chiefland, Fla. Survivors include her fiancé, John Burkholder of Pecos; her parents, Charles and Dorceliine Johnson of Archer, Fla.; two daughters, Bobbie Lea and Cathren Johnson of Archer, Fla.; two brothers, Steve Johnson of San Antonio and Mike Johnson of Tallahassee, Fla.
