Armando Garcia

Armando G. Garcia, age 64, of Las Cruces, N.M., died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 27, 1937, in Barstow, and had been an area resident since 1962. Garcia retired from Maloof-Coors Distributors as a Public Relations Agent. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1226, the Elks Lodge #1119 and the Moose Lodge. Garcia was a former member of the Optimist Club and was a participant of the Whole Enchilada Fiesta for 13 years being named the Grand Marshall in 1993. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

Garcia was the beloved husband of Lydia Urquidi Garcia of the family home; loving father of James Garcia of Pueblo, Colorado, Jack Christopher, Jeffrey and Jason Garcia all of Las Cruces, Jennifer Merkins of Arvada, Colorado, Jacquelyn Yost of Los Alamos and Jessica Anz of San Antonio; dear brother of Cheve Garcia, Tina Witt and Cruz Hodge all of Pecos, Jesus Garcia and Dell Moore of Odesssa; cherished grandfather of 10 grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death; two brothers, both named Emilio Garcia. One died in a fire accident and the second died in Vietnan War.

The family and friends joined together to celebrate the Funeral Liturgy, Thursday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m., in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, 1240 S. Espina. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho with the Rev. John Tickle officiating.

Serving as casket bearers will be James, Jack Christopher, Jason and Jeffrey Garcia, Ben Villalobos and Michael Witt.

Armando will be missed by all whose lives he touched. May God hold him in his arms forever.

Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels, 300 E. Boutz Road, Las Cruces.

Walter Shaw

Walter Benjamin Shaw, Jr., 68, of Mooresville, a farmer, died Saturday, July 27, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the McConnell Funeral Home with Dr. Mark Tolbert officiating. Burial was in Athens City Cemetery.

He was born in Limestone County, was a farmer in Limestone County and in West Texas, graduated from Tanner High School in 1951 and attended Auburn University. He was an Army veteran, serving from 1953 to 1955, was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the National Cotton Council, Limestone County Cattlemen's Association, Elks Club and Central Baptist Church. He was board president for Production Credit Association of Marfa, and a board member of the South Limestone Co-op.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Shaw; one son, Brent Allen Shaw of Tanner; four step-sons, James Webb of Mooresville, Jeff Webb of Atlanta, Billy Webb of St. Cloud, Fla., and Rory Webb of Miami; two step-daughters, Donna Webb of Decatur and Margaret Green of Crandall, Ga.; his parents, Walter B. Shaw and Frances Shaw of Decatur; one brother, James Gilbert Shaw of Desoto; one sister, Mary Rodgers of Decatur; two grandchildren and 12 step-grandchildren.

Bill Painter

Bill Painter, 48, of Katy died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, following a  massive heart attack on July 15. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Forest  Park Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer, Houston, where he will be laid to rest by  a granddaughter who was stillborn two years ago.

He was born May 11, 1954 in Pecos, to E.B. and Clarice Painter.  He  was raised in Pecos
and graduated from Pecos High School in May 1972. Bill was baptised  at West Park Baptist Church in Pecos. After graduation he joined the Army.   He then moved to Houston where he met Debra James. They were married  August 1, 1975. He was active in the First Baptist Church in Freer.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Painter of Katy; two sons, Chad Painter of Houston and Adam Painter of Katy; two daughters, Mechel and Natalie, both of Katy; three grandchildren; his parents, E.B. Painter of Uvalde and Clarice Painter of Midland; and one sister, Ginny Painter McCarty of Midland.

Eloy Ibarra

Eloy Barrios Ibarra, 47, of Edcouch, Tx., died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, in Fort Stockton.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 27, at Santa Teresita of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church, in Edcouch, with Deacon Alvin H. Gerberman officiating. Burial was in La Blanca Community Cemetery in La Blanca, Tx.

He was born Dec. 7, 1954, in Municipal Leon Guanajuato, Mexico and was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Maria Dolores Perez Ibarra of Edcouch; one son, Eloy Ibarra, Jr. of Edcouch; four daughters, Dora, Velia, Diana A. and Dominic A. Ibarra of Edcouch; five brothers, Pasqual, Ruben, Victor, Juan and Enrique Ibarra of Mexico and three sisters, Clara, Julia and Ester Ibarra of Mexico.

Sixto Navarrete

Sixto Cisneros Navarrete, 83, of Pecos, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Home Hospice of Odessa.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, July 26, at Reyes-Garcia Chapel.

Mass is scheduled for 9 a.m., Saturday, July 27, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church in Pecos with Father Ben Flores officiating. Burial will be in Mount Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born March 28, 1919, in Sierra Blanca, at an early age moved to Coyame Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1947 he moved to Pecos, where he worked in the cotton gin and the cotton fields for many years and was a member of Santa Rosa Catholic Church in Pecos.

He was preceded in death by his wife Maria De Jesus Navarrete and a one sister, Gloria Navarrete.

Survivors include five sons, Sixto Navarrete Jr. of El Paso, Francisco "Kiko" and Rene Navarrete of Midland, Octavio Navarrete of Washington, D.C., Filimon Navarrete of Odessa; three daughters, Maria Galindo, Emma Carrasco of Odessa, Rosa Navarrete of Barstow; one sister, Rosalia Ramirez of Pecos; 28 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

Frankie Smith

Frankie Smith, 78, died April 23, 2000 and her body was donated to science.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., at Fairview Cemetery, Saturday, July 27.

She was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Brownwood, was a former Pecos resident and a homemaker.

Survivors include two sisters, Maxine Wickson of Pecos, Doris Tims of El Paso; two brothers, Jimmy Smith of Houston; one daughter; two sons and several nieces and nephews.

Antonio Rayos

Antonio "Tony" Subia Rayos, 80, of Pecos, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Reeves County Hospital.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., today at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass is scheduled for noon, Wednesday, July 24, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Clovis, N.M., was retired from J.C. Penney, a United States Army Veteran who served in World War II and a Catholic.

Survivors include six daughters, Catarina R. Vasquez and Peggy Ornelas of Odessa, Julia Rayos, Carmela Ornelas of Pecos, Cecilia Mata of Fresno, Calif., Gloria Castaneda of San Antonio; seven sons, Tony Rayos, Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., Frank Ornelas, Jr., Reymundo Rayos, Freddy Ornelas and Frank Rivera of Pecos, Robert Rayos of Las Vegas, Nev., Jose Rayos of Fresno, Calif.; two brothers, Angel and Steven Rayos of Pecos; one sister, Rita Carrasco of Pecos; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Wayne Timmerman

Wayne Timmerman, 66, of Balmorhea, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 23, at the First Baptist Church in Balmorhea with Virgil Gage officiating.

He was born Sept. 18, 1935, in Floresville, was an United States Army veteran who was a presidential honor guard at Ft. Myers, Va., from 1958 until 1960, had lived in Balmorhea for 21 years and was a farmer/rancher.

He was preceded in death by one son, Joe Timmerman.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Timmerman of Balmorhea; one son, Tim Timmerman of Van Horn; one daughter, Meg Timmerman of Ft. Davis; two brothers, August Timmerman of Falfurrias, Kenneth Timmerman of Agua Dulce, Tx.; four sisters, Marion Bayliss of Somerville, Elizabeth Timmerman of Agua Dulce, Tx., Jeanette Boerjan of Falfurrias and Shirley Pickering of Contrecoeur, Quebec.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to their favorite charity.

Funeral services are pending for Wayne Timmerman, 66, of Balmorhea, who died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the Reeves County Hospital.

M.W. "Dub" Pate

M.W. "Dub" Pate, 88, of Pyote died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the Monahans Managed Care Center.

Pate was born on January 9, 1914 and was a rancher as well as a veteran.

Burial service will be held on Monday, July 22, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Toyah Cemetery, in Toyah with the Rev. Bill Campbell presiding.

Survivors include two stepsons, Henry Garland of Wylie, Glen Garland of Pyote, two stepdaughters, Gary Gail Campbell of Gorman and Darla Hasting of Savannah, GA., nine step grandchildren and one step-great grandchild.

Eldon Gilbert

Eldon H. Gilbert, 90, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2002 in San Angelo.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 20 at the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel in San Angelo with burial following at Belvedere Memorial Cemetery.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1911 in San Saba, County and served with the Texas Highway Patrol, State Police of Texas, and the Department of Public Safety in New Mexico.

He is preceded in death by his son Dan Gilbert of Kingwood and one sister LaRue Rotramel of San Antonio.

Survivors include his wife Minnie Rene Gilbert of San Angelo, one son Don Gilbert of Houston, one daughter Clair Solomon of St. Louis; one sister Teddie Herreman of San Angelo; ten grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Jesus Subia

Jesus "Chuy," "La Lievre" Subia, 63, of Pecos, died Tuesday, July 16, in California.

Services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, July 20, at Greenhills Memorial Park in California.

He was born Oct. 10, 1938, in Pecos, served in the Air Force and the Korean War.

Subia was preceded in death by his parents, Fernando Subia and Ysabel Carrillo and one son, Fernando Subia.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha Subia of California; two sons, Jesus Jr. and Danny Subia of California; one daughter, Jennifer Subia of California; three brothers Bartolo Beto Corrillo, Juan Chicano Bustamante and Israel Bustamante; four sisters Aurora Cora Rodriguez, Anita Acosta, Louisa Nunez and Carol Rayos and several grandchildren.

Greenhills Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.

W.C. Doggett

W.C. "Bill" Doggett, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at Trinity Baptist Church with Dustin Hatley presiding. Music will be provided by Clint and Veronika Doggett and Charley Adair. Burial will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, at the Blackwell Cemetery in Blackwell. Graveside services will be under the direction of Cate, Spencer & Crent Funeral Home in Sweetwater.

He was born Sept. 21, 1916, in Wagram, Mason County, Tx., spent 14 years in the Army Air Force and Civil Service during World War II, was an aircraft inspector in Secret Service. As an inspector, he made the last inspection on the Enola Gay before it was flown to the Smithsonian Institute. He worked for Navarro Supply and was branch manager for Cottingham Bearing Corporation for 30 years in Pecos and Odessa. After retirement, he moved to Lubbock in 1992. He was a member of West Park Baptist Church in Pecos and Trinity Baptist Church in Lubbock and served as deacon in both churches. He was also a choir member in both churches.

He was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Clinton on April 1, 1998; one sister, Vivian Stout and one brother, Sherman.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Doggett; two sons, Ronald Doggett of Giddings, Bob Doggett of Lubbock; four brothers, Roy and Dean Doggett of Lampasas, Lester and Alvin Doggett of Ft. Worth; one sister, Golda Burns of San Antonio; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial be made to Blackwell Cemetery Association of Blackwell, Tx., or to a charity of your choice.

Joe Ray Lara

Joe Ray Lara, 35, of Pecos, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, in Glendale, Ariz.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, July 14, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, July 15, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born July 16, 1966, in Pecos, was a welder for Freddy Erectors, Inc., a lifelong Pecos resident and a Catholic.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jesus R. Lara.

Survivors include one daughter, Desiree Ybarra Lara of Pecos; his mother, Juanita Montes of Odessa; three brothers, Jesus N. Lara of Glendale, Ariz., Javier N. Lara of Kermit, Michael James Lara of Fort Worth and numerous nieces and nephews.

Janice Lee

Janice Christin Lee, 26, of Pecos, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 12, at First Baptist Church with Greer Willis officiating.

She was born Sept. 27, 1975, in Pecos, was Valedictorian of the 1994 Pecos High School class, attended the University of Texas in Austin, Rice University in Houston and received her B.A. degree from Texas Tech in Lubbock. She was a faithful attendant at First Baptist Church, where she worked with children in Vacation Bible School and Mission Friends.

Survivors include her parents, Chun S. and Betty Lee of Pecos; two brothers, Stephen Lee of Lawrence, Kan. and Albert Lee of Amarillo.

Robert Blake

Robert "Bob" Blake, 62, of Whitehouse, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at his residence.

Services will be held on Friday, July 12, at Flint Baptist Church with burial at Tyler Memorial Cemetery.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1939, in Franklin, N.H. and moved to Pecos in 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Christie Blake of Whitehouse; two daughters, Norma Tompkins of Tyler, Lorna Navarette of Barstow; one son, James Blake of Barstow; one sister, Lillian Cote of Franklin, N.H. and nine grandchildren.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations to help with funeral costs, be made to Christie Blake, 12920 Shawntae Lane, Tyler, Tx. 75703.

Matilde Cano

Matilde Cano, 77, of Pecos, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at the Reeves County Hospital.

Mass was held at 3 p.m., today, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born March 16, 1925, in Pueblito, Chih., Mexico, was a retired laborer and a Catholic.

Cano was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Cano and one son, Roberto Cano.

Survivors include one son, Martin Cano of Odessa; seven daughters, Ramona Flotte, Martha Cano, Ofelia Samaniego, Ivonne Flotte of Odessa, Blanca Leyva of Presidio, Griselda Contreras of Ojinaga, Mexico, Maria Elena Anchondo of Pecos; four brothers, Elizardo Cano, Ruberto Cano, Jesus Cano, Manuel Cano, of Pueblito, Chih. Mexico; three sisters, Vizenta Cano, Eva Cano of Pueblito, Chih. Mexico, Olga Cano Nieto of Odessa; 29 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

Miguel Chavez, Sr., of Odessa, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.

He was born May 8, 1934, in Candelaria, Tx., was a construction worker and a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Chavez; one son, Miguel Chavez of Pecos; two daughters, Elsa Palomino of Pecos, Patricia Nunez of Odessa; five brothers, Pete Chavez of Balmorhea, Francisco Chavez of Odessa, Ricardo Chavez of Big Spring, Chico Chavez of Artesia, N.M., Abel Chavez of Pecos; two sisters, Rosa Dominguez of Pecos, Petra Porras of Arizona; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Cristobal "Cris" Martinez, 13, of Austin, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, in Fort Stockton in an automobile accident.

Mass was held at 11 a.m., today, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born March 22, 1989, in Ojinaga, Chih., Mexico, was a student and a Catholic.

Survivors include his mother, Yolanda Urias of Austin; his grandparents, Julia Olivas of Pecos, Dominga and Ricardo Santiesteban of Ojinaga, Mexico; two brothers, Lewis Martinez of Pecos, Jose Air Martinez of Austin and two sisters, Betty and Yollisa Muro of Austin.

Bianca Urias

Bianca Urisa, 9, of Del Valley, Tx., died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Pecos County Memorial Hospital in Fort Stockton, following a car accident.

Mass was held at 11 a.m., today, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 23, 1992, in El Paso, was a student and a Catholic.

Survivors include her parents, Ezequiel Urias and Mireya Urias of Del Valley; her grandparents, Julia Olivas of Pecos, Esequiel Montes of Chih., Mexico, Maria Ester Nunez of Chih. Mexico and two brothers, Eduardo Montes of Austin, Hector Urias of Austin.

Refugia "Cuca" Franco, 82, of Andrews, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at Permian General Hospital in Andrews.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m., today at McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 6, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Andrews with Rev. Bernard Gully, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Andrews North Cemetery.

She was born July 4, 1920, at Rancho Ochoa in Presidio County, moved to Crane from McCamey and then to Andrews in 1989, was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Andrews.

Survivors include her husband, Serapio Franco of Andrews; one daughter, Delma Franco Gonzales of Andrews; two sons, Paul Franco of Odessa and Silvino Franco of Midland; one sister, Manuela Urias of Odessa; one brother, Simon Carrasco of Pecos; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clairbel Fuller

Clairbel Fuller, 87, died today, Friday, July 5, 2002, in Crestwood Assistance Living in Willis Point.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, July 7, at Barstow Cemetery with Ken Calhoun officiating.

She was born June 1, 1915, in Hearne, was a retired teacher, who had taught in Barstow, Kermit and Columbus, Tx. and was a Matron of the Eastern Star, Barstow Chapter #822.

Survivors include one son, Clint Ford Fuller of Barstow; one daughter, Susan Crow of Willis Point; one brother, Dr. Ralph Ford of Houston; one sister, Thelma Hamm of Waco and two grandchildren.
