Raymond Bowie

Raymond Pinkney Bowie, 90, of Pecos, and formerly of El Paso, died March 26, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital after a short illness.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 28, at the Pecos Church of Christ with Rev. Joel Harris officiating. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery East in El Paso, on Friday, March 29, at 11 a.m. (Mountain Standard Time).

He was born in Pecos on Nov. 14, 1911 and graduated from Pecos High School where he was active on the Eagle football, basketball and baseball teams.

After 40 years of service with Lea County Gas, Western Gas Service Company and Southern Union Gas Company, he retired in 1974 as Division Manager in charge of construction.

He was an avid sports fan particularly of the Dallas Cowboys and the University of Texas at El Paso Miner Basketball team. His hobbies included raising game fowl where he was known throughout the Southwest and Northern Mexico as a top breeder.

As a member of the Church of Christ, he served as deacon of the North Loop Church of Christ in El Paso from 1970 through 1986. After moving back to Pecos in 1991, he was an active member of the Pecos Church of Christ.

He married Opal Fenter Bowie in 1936, who preceded him in death in 1979. A son, Mike, also preceded him in death in 2000.

He is survived by two sons, Jim and his wife, Betty of Round Rock and J. David and his wife, Mary of Dennis, Massachusetts and a daughter in law, Mary Bowie of Red Oak. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Petra Zermeno, 83, of Pecos, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital.

She was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Ruidosa, Tx., was a lifetime Pecos resident, a homemaker and a Catholic.

Zermeno was preceded in death by her husband, Ysidro Zermeno; one son, Ysidro Zermeno, Jr.; two daughters, Celia Delgado and Micaela Z. Corrales.

Survivors include two sons, George Zermeno of Barstow, Mario Zermeno of Corpus Christi; one daughter, Erminia Zermeno of Pecos; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 38 great-great grandchildren.

Eric Lujan Guzman, 20, of Pecos, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Peaceful Garden Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born May 21, 1981, in Pecos, was a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic.

Survivors include his mother, Veronica Lujan of Pecos; his father, Julian Guzman of Pecos; two brothers, Jacob and Albert Guzman of Pecos; his grandmother, Amelia R. Guzman of Pecos; maternal grandparents Mariano and Reyes Lujan of Marfa; six uncles, Jesus, Armando, Ruben and Juan Guzman of Pecos, Lorenzo Guzman of Hobbs, N.M., Cruz Guzman of Odesssa; two aunts, Socorro Lopez of Odessa and Marina Venegas of Pecos.

Patsy Cornelison Boynton, 69, of Wichita Falls, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at United Regional Health Care in Wichita Falls.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 24, at Fry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dwayne Lamberson, Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Bowie, Tx. and Dee Bowen of Commanche, Okla. Burial was in Salona Cemetery in Salona, Tx.

She was born Aug. 10, 1932, in Sunset, Tx., was a homemaker and had been a resident of Barstow for several years before moving to Wichita Falls eight years ago.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil S. Cornelison; second husband, Kenneth Boynton; one son, Dwight Cornelison; great-grandson, Justin Cornelison and one brother, Roy Edward Stephenson.

Survivors include three sons, Cecil Cornelison of Mesquite, Sherman and Roy Cornelison of Wichita Falls; one daughter, Vida Williams of Randlett, Okla.; four brothers, Bobbie Gene Stephenson of Adkins, Ark., Donald Ray Stephenson of Bowie, Jimmy George Stephenson of Denver, Colo., Charles Williams Stephenson of Nocona, Tx.; five sisters, Eva Mae Redman of North Richland Hills, Burma Irene Jacob and Peggy Dale Butler of Bowie, Ruth Laverne Mayfield of Duncan, Okla., Lillie Rose Anderson of Bellevue; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Hilton Dale Lawless, 89, of Tomball, Tx., died Saturday, March 23, 2002.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 26, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche.

He was born Dec. 12, 1912 in Comanche, was a longtime Pecos resident, had lived in Rio Concho West in San Angelo for several years and was a member of Southland Baptist Church in San Angelo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Novella Lawless, one son, Albert Dale Lawless and one brother, Welch Lawless.

Survivors include one daughter, Nan Lawless Ray; one sister, Byrlene Moore; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

Susana Aguirre

Susana L. Aguirre, 73, of Odessa, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.

Mass was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Rodriguez officiating.

She was born May 24, 1928, in Candelaria, Tx., was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Odessa and Our Lady of Fatima Church in Van Horn. She was also a member of La Guadalupana Society.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Delfin and Pablo Lopez.

Survivors include four sons, Conrad, Carlos III, Roy and Bobby Aguirre of Odessa; three daughters, Mary Lou Pasillas of Pecos, Mary Hilda Aguirre Santiago of El Paso, Rosemary Aguirre Santiago of Odessa; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Jose Orona Fuentes, 91, of Pecos, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 7, 1911, in Toyahvale, was retired from the Texas Department of Transportation, a lifetime resident and a Catholic.

Cesar Fuentes of Vallejo, Calif.; three daughters, Linda Rodriguez of Vallejo, Calif., Enedina "Dina" Tarango of Denver, Colo., Barbara "May" Landers of Vallejo, Calif.; one brother, Antonio Fuentes of Loving, N.M.; one sister, Felipa Garcia of Muleshoe, Tx.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vada Louise Gray, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at her residence.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Munday First Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Gressett officiating. Burial was in Johnson Memorial Cemetery.

Gray was born May 3, 1918, in Paint Creek, was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one son, C.T. Gray, Jr.

Lola Mary Sauter, 87, died Sunday, March 17, in Knopp Nursing Home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, in Beckmann Funeral Home Chapel in Fredericksburg with Rev. Monte Marshall officiating. Burial will be held at 4 p.m., in the Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Tx.

She was born Sept. 29, 1914, in Kosse, Tx. and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Sauter and a brother, Ray Allen.

Survivors include one brother, Bill Allen of Pecos and several nieces and nephews.

Dionisia "Nicha" Villanueva, 75, of Pecos, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.

She was born April 8, 1926, in Buenos Aires, Chihuahua, Mexico, was a homemaker and a Catholic.

Survivors include her husband, Manuel Villanueva of Pecos; three sons, Joel, Israel "Roddy" Villanueva all of Pecos, David Villanueva of Odessa; two daughters, Anita Prieto and Rosemary Chabarria of Pecos; three brothers, Faustino and Francisco Salazar of Buenos Aires, Chih., Mexico, Geronimo Salazar of Odessa; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Thelma Neeley, 86, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

She was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Rotan, was a homemaker and a resident of Pecos for 25 years and moved to Carlsbad in 1974.

Survivors include one grandson, Kreg Harrison and wife Sharon of Lawrenceville, Ga.; great-grandchildren, David and Amanda Harrison of Lawrenceville; niece, Gay Peters of Standford, Tx.,; former son-in-law Coy Harrison of Marietta, Ga.; former sister-in-law Amalita McCright and her husband Jim McCright of Rotan; some very dear friends, Shirley Bowen, June Nichols and Laura Boggs.

Her family and friends will miss her tremendously.

Catarino Florez

Funeral services for Catarino Lara Florez will be Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Thomas Funeral Home.

Florez was born April 30, 1925, in Colorado City, Texas. He was a resident of the Midland/Odessa area for the past 20 years.

Survivors include his two sons, Ramon Florez of Midland and Jesse Florez of Odessa, and one daughter, Sylvia Orona of Pecos. Eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, three brothers, Speedy Flores, Lorenzo Flores, both of Pecos and Ciprino Flores of El Paso, two sisters, Rosa Bitolas of El Paso and Alicia Olgin of Midland.

His parents and three brothers, Juan Flores, Roberto Flores and Mariano Flores and three sisters Dominga Rayos, Juana Garbay and Petra Valenzuela, preceeded him in death.

Pallbearers will be: Julian Orona, Hector Flores, Justin Mora, Jaycom Mora, Chris Olgin and Joe Olgin.

Thomas Chavez Sr., 70, of Pecos, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Covenant Medical Center Hospital in Lubbock.

He was born March 7, 1932, in Pecos, was a retired carpenter, a lifetime Pecos resident and a member of Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Alicia M. Chavez of Pecos; six sons, Sammy and Thomas Chavez, Jr. of Pecos, Joe and Ernest Martinez of Pecos, David Chavez of Arvin, Calif., Enrique Martinez of Odessa; one daughter, Lupe Baca of Carlsbad, N.M.; two sisters, Bernada Chavez and Santos Garcia of Pecos; 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Norine J. Hoover, 88, of Pecos, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at the Pecos Nursing Home.

She was born May 8, 1913, in Sonora, was a retired cotton store manager and a Methodist.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Gene Ater and Joe R. Ater and her first husband, Joe L. Ater.

Survivors include her husband, Mitch Hoover of Pecos; one daughter, Peggy Drake of Hobbs, N.M.; one son, Jimmy Ater of Arlington; one step-son, M.M. Hoover of Saginaw, Tx.; daughter-in-law Caroline Ater of Tyler; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was born Jan. 22, 1918, in Marfa, was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II and a retired concrete plant manager.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis Stool of Pecos; four stepsons, Charles P. Medanich of Vienna, Virginia, Scott Medanich of San Angelo, Ted Medanich of Nanaco, Venezuela, Roger Medanich of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Ida Mason of Albuquerque, N.M. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ernest Vargas, 76, of Pecos, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital.

Services were held Tuesday, March 2 at St. Dominick Catholic Church in San Antonio. Burial was at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

He was born May 14, was a retired truck driver who worked for Roadway and a veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Josie Rayos of Pecos; one stepson, Pete Rayos of Manor; four stepdaughters Norma Villareal, Mandy Sotelo, Melissa Sotelo of Pecos and Prissy Rodriguez of Hobbs, N.M.

She was born June 29, 1908, in Childress, Tx., was a homemaker, a resident of Wink for 13 years and a Methodist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.E. "Bill" Dodd on June 23, 1992, a daughter Dorothy Lee Ross, one grandson, Jeremy Heath Everett and a nephew, Eddie Bergan.

Survivors include one son, John Dodd of Wink; one daughter, Peggy Treadwell of Wink; one sister, Flora McCrary of Paris, Tx.; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Bill Joe Oden, 75, of Pecos, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at his residence.

Services were held on Saturday, March 2, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim Miles officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

Billy Joe Oden was born in Wichita Falls to Irbiso Gary and Marie Oden and moved to Pecos at the age of two. On June 10, 1945 he married Lucille N. Ligon, was a construction contractor and a Presbyterian.

He was preceded in death by one son, Loyd Earl.

Survivors include his wife Lucille Oden of Pecos; two sons, Gary J. and his wife, Carolyn Oden who live on the Ligon family ranch near Coyanosa, Paul Harvey Oden of Pecos; a brother, John Oden of New York City; four grandchildren, Gary Wade of Midland, Cody Earl of Stevenville, Hollie of New York City and Kimberly Ann of Odessa.

Baby Michael James Proft, of Pecos, died on the day of his birth on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 at Odessa Regional Hospital in Odessa.

Baby Michael was loved and survived by his parents, Tabitha Akins and Jason Proft, both of Pecos; his maternal grandparents, James and Mary Ann Akins, of Pecos; and his paternal grandparents, Berry Proft of Gray, Indiana and Mary Kay Proft, of Springfield, Missouri.

Gloria Alvarez

Gloria Alvarez, 45, of Manor, TX, died on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at the Hospice Austin's Christopher House in Austin, TX.

A rosary was held on Sunday, Feb. 24 in Pecos.

Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m., today at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with Father Miguel Angel Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

She was born on March 3, 1956 in Fort Stockton, was a convenience store clerk and a Catholic.

Survivors include her husband, Ramon Alvarez, of Manor; her mother and stepfather, Josie Rayos and Ernest Vargas, of Pecos; her father Fermin Garcia, of Fort Stockton; two sons Ramon and Charlie Alvarez, both of Manor; two daughters Mary Valenzuela, of Pecos and Gloria Rebecca Alvarez, of Manor; one brother Pete Rayos of Manor; four sisters, Norma Villareal, of Pecos, Prissy Rodriguez, of Hobbs, NM, Mandy Sotelo, of Pecos, and Melissa Sotelo, of Pecos; and six granchildren.

Mrs. Henry Ann Davis

Mrs. Henry Ann Davis, 78, of Georgetown, TX, died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2002 at the Cook-Walden/Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m., today at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos.

She was born on March 12, 1923 in Stephenville, TX to Fred and Donnie Chandler. She was a graduate of Sul Ross State University and spent 20 years teaching elementary school in Pecos before retiring and moving to Georgetown 11 years ago.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Jack Ray Davis.

Survivors include her brother Fred C. Chandler, of Austin; her daughter Jacquelyn Gunn of Georgetown; her son Jack Davis of Austin and five grandchildren.

Luis A. Molinar, 80, of Odessa, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.

Mass was held at 2 p.m., today, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Presidio, Tx., was a lifetime resident of Odessa, a machinist for Permian Casting and a Catholic.

Survivors include Candelaria A. Molinar of Odessa; three sons, Luis Efren, Justo and Felipe Molinar of Odessa; two daughters, Rosa E. Almance and Ester Gomez of Odessa; four sisters, Teodora Armendariz and Elisa Hernandez of Goshen, Calif., Maria Castillo of Odessa, Eva Salas of Presidio; five brothers, Silverio Molinar and Jesus Molina of Odessa, Jose Molinar Ontario, Calif., Isabel Molinar of Pecos, Lorenzo Molinar of Ojinaga, Mexico; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ramon O. Nunez, 71, of Barstow, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Odessa Medical Center Hospital.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., today, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel.

He was born March 15, 1930, in Saragosa, was a veteran of the Marine Corp. who served in the Korean War, a lifelong Barstow resident, a retired assistant manager for Safeway grocery store and a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Nunez of Barstow; two sons, Mario Nunez of Monahans, Omar Nunez of Barstow; one daughter, Delma Gonzales of Odessa; one brother, Jesus O. Nunez of Pecos; two sisters, Elisa Tercero of Pecos, Beatriz Ramirez of Las Cruces, N.M.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Hazel Stephens

Hazel H. Stephens, 87, of De Soto, formerly of Clarksville, Ark., died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 in De Soto.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Oakland Cemetery, in Clarksville, Ark., with Rev. Lowell Eaton officiating.

She was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Barstow, graduated from Barstow High School in 1935, had worked for the Farm Security Administration, the highway patrol, retail floral industry, retail clothing and the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah school system administration offices.

Stephens was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph, Walter "Buck", John and Wilson "Bill" Burkholder and three sisters, Flossie Nutt, Viola Howry and Pauline Wright.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Stephens of De Soto; one sister, Gertrude Hestes of Ft. Worth and one grandson.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice in memory of Hazel Stephens.

Dahazala La'Nette Barton, a baby, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Dallas Children's Medical Center.

Bessie P. Hancock, 68, of Pecos, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital.

She was born April 10, 1933, in Santa Fe, Tenn., had lived in Pecos for eight years, was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include, one brother, Wesley Brooks of Columbia, Tenn.; two sisters, Louise Scroggins of Pecos, Christine Baker of Columbia, Tenn. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roberto Jose Jimenez, 48, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Hobbs, N.M.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m., today, at Calvin Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, in Eunice, N.M.

He was born Aug. 24, 1953 in Pecos, was a laborer and a Catholic.

Jimenez was preceded in death by his mother, Matilde Jaquez.

Survivors include two sons, Emanuel and Pablo Jimenez of Hobbs, N.M.; one daughter, Celena Jimenez of Hobbs, N.M.; one brother, Jose Luis Carrillo of Odessa and four grandchildren.

Antonio Abila

Pecos, Feb. 15, 2002 - Antonio Jimenez Abila, of Barstow, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m., today at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Barstow.

Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church with Father Ben Flores officiating. Burial will be in Barstow Cemetery.

He was born June 13, 1915, in Barstow, was retired from the Cotton Gin, was a lifelong resident of Barstow and a Catholic.

Abila was preceded in death by one son, Genaro Abila and one grandchild.

Survivors include his wife, Raquel Abila of Barstow; two sons, Alfredo Abila of Barstow, Alberto Abila of Visaila, Calif.; two daughters, Patricia Galdo of Arlington, Hortencia Castillo of La Porte, Tx.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

John Jackson, 59, of Pecos, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Reeves County Hospital.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 15, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. L.H. Woodard officiating. Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery in Pecos.

He was born Jan. 3, 1943, in San Antonio, was a customer service manager for TNP-First Choice Power Co., an Air Force Veteran and a Christian.

Survivors include his wife, Diann Jackson of Pecos; one son, John "Delaney" Jackson of Joelton, Tenn.; his mother Pauline Jackson of Junction, Tx.; one sister, Kittie Conner of Harper and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harvey Schoen

Harvey Herold Henry Schoen, 77, of Taylor, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at the Christopher House in Austin.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, at Providence Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Best officiating. Burial will be in Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville.

He was born Feb. 20, 1924 in Dessau, Tx., served in the Navy during WWII as a Radar Technician, was a game warden for 37 years, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of West Taylor, the VFW, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Schoen of Taylor; one daughter, Susann Cunningham and two grandchildren.
