Marie Roberts

Graveside services for Marie Roberts, 76, of Marathon, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001 at Marathon Cemetery with Rev. Michael Brunl officiating. Services are under the direction of Geeslin Funeral Home of Alpine.

Roberts died on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001 at Midland Memorial Hospital after a short battle with lung cancer.

She was born on May 24, 1925 in San Antonio, and moved with her parents to Marathon in 1936. She married Marshall Roberts on July 10, 1942, and was employed for many years by the Marathon ISD. She was a member of the Marathon Methodist Church for over 60 years and of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Marshall Roberts of Marathon; a brother, Lloyd Martin of Alpine; one son, Jim Roberts of Marathon; two daughters, Donna Davis of Pecos and Marsha Roberts of Midland; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Marathon Methodist Church, Marathon Cemetery Association or charity of choice.

Lencho Abila

Lencho Abila, 68, of Wink died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kermit Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. John Lucido officiating. Burial will be at Kermit Cemetery, under the direction of Cooper Funeral Chapel.

Abila was born in Barstow, had lived in Winkler County for 47 years and was the owner of Lenchor's Citgo Service Station. He was a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Luisa Abila of Wink; two sons, Arturo Abila of Odessa and Jesse Abila of Wink; two daughters, Terri Abila and Melba Abila of Kermit; three brothers, Epifiano Abila of Barstow, Julian Abila of Odessa and Pablo Abila of Pecos; three sisters, Natividad Mata of Phoenix, Ariz., Licha Aldaz of San Antonio and Eufemia Carrasco of Odessa; and five grandchildren.

Natalia Melchor

Natalia Alvarez Melchor, an infant, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Methodist Healthare-Germantown.

Graveside services were held at Memory Hill Gardens.

Survivors include her parents, Christina Denise Alvarez and Alfredo Melchor of Memphis, Tenn.; grandparents, Adolfo Alvarez of Sonora, Carmen Zaragoza of Mexico and Delia Alvarez of Dallas; great-grandmothers, Josie Alvarez and Teresa Matta, both of Pecos.

Richard Turnbough

Richard "Rip" Turnbough, 80, of Balmorhea, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at his residence.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, at Church of Christ in Balmorhea, with Pastor Eli Borden officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Quanah, Tx., was a veteran who served in the Army Air Corp in WWII, a retired farmer, a lifelong Balmorhea resident and a member of Church of Christ.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials contributions may be made to the Herold of Truth in Abilene; New Mexico Children's Home in Portales, N.M. or Camp Blue Haven, P.O. Box 1300 Canyon, Tx. 79015.

Survivors include his wife, Gussie Turnbough of Balmorhea; four daughters, Karen Smith of Tucumcari, N.M., Cynthia Winters of Austin, Debbie Vickers of Brady and Melanie Reed of Morgan; two sons, Dennis Turnbough of Humble and Larry Turnbough of Balmorhea; two brothers, Wade Turnbough of Meadow and David Turnbough of Denver City, Tx.; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Florence Howell

Florence Lena Emma Howell, 76, of Pecos, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at Pine Arbor Health Care Center in Silsbee.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 9, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Fickenscher officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

She was born May 15, 1925, in San Antonio, was a retired Bryan Nursery employee, a lifelong Pecos resident and a Lutheran.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Howell; five brothers and one sister.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Howell of Silsbee, John Howell of Hico; two brothers, Wilburn Laubach of Austin and Charles Laubach of Friendswood; three sisters, Ester Wilcox of Everman, Pat Smith of Florence and Adline Waiser of Thorndale, and four grandchildren.

Manuela Chavez, 89, of Pecos, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Odessa Medical Center.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., tonight at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass is scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with Father Ben Flores officiating. Burial will be in Barstow Cemetery.

She was born April 7, 1912, in Candelaria, Tx., was a homemaker, a lifelong Pecos resident and a Catholic.

Survivors include six daughters, Esperanza Abila of Barstow, Eustolia Martinez of Chicago, Ill., Hortensia Jimenez of Laredo, Eva Porras of Ozona, Maria Juarez and Yolanda Gonzales of Pecos; one brother, Antonio Porras of Los Angeles, Calif.; three sisters, Liza Jasso of Carlsbad, N.M. and Elia Contreras and Socorro Bustamantes of Midland; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Angel Josue Arenivas Gonzales, a baby, died at Hayes Medical Center Hospital in Hayes, Kansas.

Lonnie Kelly

Lonnie Witherspoon Kelly, 94, died on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, in Midland.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa on Friday, Nov. 2.

She was born May 13, 1907, attended West Texas State College in Canyon and later attended business school in Abilene in the 1930s. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Pecos, had lived in Pecos since 1934, in early years was employed by Red Bluff Power and Gas as a bookkeeper, a member of the Pecos Art Association, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Magna Carta Damas and was listed in "Personalities of the South."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Kelly; one sister, Evelyn Hubbard and one brother, Jake Witherspoon.

Survivors include five nieces and three nephews.

Aurora Adame

Aurora Serna Adame, 67, of Wilcox, Ariz., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, in Willcox.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, at Westlawn Chapel in Willcox.

Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, at Greenwood Memory Lawn in Phoenix, Ariz.

She was born on July 19, 1934, in Runge, Tx., was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Arturo Adame, Sr. of Willcox; two sons, Arturo Adame, Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz. And Rudy Adame of Hobbs, N.M.; two daughters, Norma Adame of Tucson, Ariz. and Nancy Adame of Willcox; five sisters, four brothers, 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 59 nieces and nephews.

Kelton Garrett

Kelton C. Garrett, 83, of Midland, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Midland Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos.

He was born Nov. 28, 1917, in Odessa, was a veteran who had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and a retired carpenter.

Survivors include three nephews; one niece; six great nieces and four great-nephews.

Roscoe McAlister

Roscoe "Doc" McAlister, 90, of Pecos, died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 in Odessa.

Graveside services are scheduled for 5 p.m., today at Mount Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1910 in Stephenville was a lifetime resident of Pecos, a retired mechanic and a Baptist.

Survivors include two children Donna Jenkins, of Odessa, and Gene McAlister, of Springfield, Tenn.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Viva Funderburk

BEDFORD — Viva Funderburk, 88, a retired registered nurse, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001 at a care center in Hurst, Texas. Burial: Waco was at Memorial Park.

Viva and her husband Dennis were residents of Pecos from 1954 and 1967. Viva was the nurse at Rattlesnake Bomber Base until it closed, and thereafter worked at the county hospital, for Drs. Camp and Hay, Dr. Schmidt, and cared for Mrs. Sid Mack Kyle.

She was a lifelong Baptist and was a 1928 graduate of Tivy High School in

Kerrville and a 1934 graduate of Shannon Hospital School of Nursing in San Angelo.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, Dennis Funderburk and her son, Paul Funderburk.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Noel Funderburk, and two granddaughters.

Lana Osborn

Lana Beth Osborn, 54, of Pecos, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in San Antonio.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Toyah Cemetery with Rev. Les Woodard officiating.

She was born March 26, 1947, in San Angelo, was a homemaker, a lifelong Pecos resident and a member of Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Osborn of Pecos; one son, Billy Don Guthrie of Brownwood; three daughters, Lana Renee Scandurra of Austin, Anita McNelly of Moore, Okla., Kathy Tolle of Euless, N.M.; one brother, Richard Arlen Miller of San Antonio; one sister, Sandra Ellen Doody of San Antonio and 12 grandchildren.

Victorio Licon Mendoza, 66, of Pecos, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., today at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 23, 1934, in Pecos, was a retired oilfield employee, a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank L. and Magdeleno Mendoza and one daughter, Mary Lou M. Perez.

Survivors include his wife, Alexandra Jaso Mendoza of Pecos; two sons, Rudy J. Mendoza of Austin and Tony J. Mendoza of Pecos; four daughters, Nina M. Reyes, Patsy M. Calderon and Linda M. Chavez and Ester M. Mendoza of Pecos; three brothers, Santana L., Pedro L. and Joe L. Mendoza of Pecos; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Senaido B. Pargas, 77, of Odessa died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at his residence.

Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapelin in Odessa. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

He was born June 5, 1924, in D'Hanis, Tx., had worked for the railroad, brick factory and farming and also had worked for Jones Brothers Construction Company.

Survivors include two sons, Michael and Anthony Pargas of San Antonio; three step-sons, Glenn Lambrano of Midland, Frank and Higinio Garcia of Odessa; three daughters, Emma Smith, Catalina Pargas and Dorothy Pargas of San Antonio; two stepdaughters, Norma Enriquez of Pecos and Hilda Rodriguez of Odessa; three brothers, Joe Pargas of D'Hanis, Jimmy Pargas of Roswell, N.M. and Ernesto Pargas of Pecos; two sisters, Maria Tovar of San Antonio, Maria Olivia Pargas of Odessa; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Guillermo R. Rubio, 73, of Fort Stockton, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in Fort Stockton.

Services were held on Saturday, Oct. 13, at St. Joseph Church in Fort Stockton.

He was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Presidio, was a rig operator, a resident of Pecos County since 1988, and a Catholic.

Survivors include Severa L. Rubio of Fort Stockton; five sons, Guillermo Rubio, Jr. of Pecos, Alfredo and Reyes Rubio of Odessa and Willie and Demetrio Rubio of Fort Stockton; three daughters, Gloria Machuca, Olivia Navarette and Rebecca Granado of Pecos; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Jose Luis Mendes Chavez, 51, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Odessa Medical Center.

He was born on April 5, 1950 in Monahans.

Martha Louise "Sis" Holcombe, 77, of Pecos, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Reeves County Hospital.

Services were at 3 p.m., today, at First Baptist Church in Pecos with Rev. Greer Willis and Rev. Les Woodard officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

She was born March 9, 1924, in Westerbrook, Tx., was retired owner of SOS, Specialties of Sis Gift Shop and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Walter M. Holcombe of Pecos; two daughters, Martha Reid of Ripley, Miss., Yvonna Johnson of Pecos; one son, Walt Holcombe III of Austin; one brother, Bill Ellis of Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Peggy Jo Ellis of Pecos, Sue Leach of San Antonio, Nita Parker of Longview; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Guadalupe Nabarrette

Guadalupe Nabarrette, 73, of Pecos, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at his residence.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m., today at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass is scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 12, 1927, in Ruidosa, Tx., was a retired construction laborer, a lifetime Pecos resident and a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Silbia H. Nabarrette of Pecos; two sons, Arturo Nabarrette of Oakdale, Calif. and Juan Nabarrette of Pecos; three daughters, Guadalupe N. Davis of Pecos, Veronica Nabarrette of Plano, Ill. and Calixta Nabarrette of Pecos; one brother, Manuel Nabarrette of Ojinaga, Mexico; two sisters, Matilde Burciaga of Ojinaga, Mexico and Inex Carreon of Aldama, Mexico and two grandchildren.

Terry Burkholder

Terry Louis Burkholder, 56, of Pecos, died Thursday, Oct. 11, at his home.

A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14, at the First Christian Church in Pecos and burial will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Elmwood Cemetery in Abilene at 2 p.m.

He was born April 9, 1945, in Pecos, enrolled in New Mexico Military Institute and graduated in 1963. The next fall he went to Texas Tech University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture. After graduation, he received his commission and served in the United States Army in the Quartermaster Corp for two years. Terry and his wife Jean returned to Pecos in August on 1971 and he went into business for himself.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Burkholder of Pecos; two daughters, Tiffani Burkholder of Houston and Tera Burkholder King of Fort Stockton.

Valeria Vela Sanchez

Valeria Vela Sanchez, a newborn, died Oct. 9, 2001, at Odessa Regional Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 12, at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Paul Garcia officiating.

Survivors include her parents, Valerie and Eleuterio Sanchez of Pecos; paternal grandparents, Daniel and Estela Sanchez of Saragosa; maternal grandparents, Fernando Reyes of Pecos and Elvia Reyes of Hobbs, N.M.; great-grandmother, Alicia Vela of Pecos and numerous aunts and uncles.

Refugio "Tato" Yanez, 74, of Kermit, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital in Odesssa.

Services were held at 2 p.m., today, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kermit with Father John Lucido officiating. Burial will be in Kermit Cemetery.

He was born July 4, 1927, in Balmorhea, was retired, had worked for Southwestern Bell as a house service maintainer, was a resident of Kermit for 34 years and a prior resident of Pecos. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and "De Colores" and Cursillistas in Kermit.

Survivors include his wife, Merced Yanez of Kermit; two sons, Refugio Yanez, Jr. of Monahans, Jessie Yanez of Kermit; three daughters, Jovie Aranda and Josy Alvarado of Kermit, Sylvia Cunningham of Fort Worth; two brothers, Juan Yanez of Odessa, Jose "Chito" Yanez of Pomona, Calif.; one sister, Ortencia Ramos of Odessa and seven grandchildren.

Carlota L. Nunez, 101, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at the Pecos Nursing Home.

Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Saragosa with Father Ben Florez officiating. Burial will be in the Saragosa Cemetery.

She was born Nov. 3, 1899, in Presidio, was a homemaker, a lifetime resident of Saragosa and a Catholic.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Beau Jack Hendrick, 58, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at Reeves County Hospital.

He was born May 11, 1943, in Odessa, was a retired school principal and a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Tina Hendrick of Pecos; one son, Beau Tatum Hendrick and his wife, Laura of The Colony; one brother, B.C. "Nard" Hendrick of Odessa; one sister, Judy Hendrick of Fort Worth; one grandchild, Beau Tristan Hendrick of The Colony and numerous nieces and nephews.

Adam Nunez Minjarez, 20, of Odessa, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in Odessa.

He was born on Feb. 15, 1981, in Pecos.

Survivors include one son, Adam Minjarez, Jr. of Odessa; his mother, Angie N. Bessie Sample

Bessie Sample, 77, of Andrews, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at her residence in Andrews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7, at McNett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ted Short officiating. Burial was in Andrews West Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Athens, lived in Seminole for many years before moving to Andrews in 1971, owned and operated the B&J Café in Andrews from 1971 until 1989. In 1969 she was honored as the first female to be named Restrauntor of the year by the Texas Restaurant Association. The Andrews Chamber of Commerce also named her the Citizen of the year, she was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge in Andrews and a member of Means Memorial Methodist Church in Andrews.

Survivors include three sons, Dr. Chet Sample of Alpine; Gary "Tex" Richards of Omaha, Earl Sample of Pecos; three daughters, Marie Murphy of Andrews, Bobbie Podrazik of Midland and Edna Langehennig of Andrews; 16 grandchildren and d16 great-grandchildren.

Alberto Marquez

Alberto Marquez Marquez, 70, of Fort Stockton, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in Fort Stockton.

He was a resident of El Paso for 65 years, a veteran of WWII and Korea as a Staff Sgt. with the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the VFW Post #8919 and the DAV Post #187 and a Catholic.
