To all my fellow classmates:

Has there been any interest or activity regarding a 20 year class re-union for the class of '84? At our last (10 year) reunion, I was voted as the least changed. I was also voted as the one with most gray hair. That didn't make sense to me because I was either the most gray haired person to ever graduate from Pecos High or the voting was "fixed". This time, I expect to be voted the MOST changed because I am completely bald and have gained 137 pounds. I tip the scales at 297 pounds and have a really hairy back. It is cool.

If anyone is considering organizing this, I would be happy to assist. I currently live in Detroit so it would have to be long distance but with the internet and email, it's almost like I live in Kermit. I know it seems to be months away and there is plenty of time, it just seems that time flies by at such a quick rate lately, that the summer will be here before you know it.

I will be in the area for the Christmas holidays and can be available to meet with anyone that is interested in doing this.

At any rate, I hope to hear from some of you soon.

Take Care,

Jess Miramontes

I really enjoyed the Mega-Reunion in Dallas over the holiday weekend. Many thanks to the organizers for another great reunion!

Just before leaving the hotel on Sunday, I was approached by a man who had overheard we were from Pecos. His name was Paul Crawford and he said he was looking for his college roommate at Texas Tech, who was from Pecos. Mr. Crawford graduated from Tech in 1943 and the roommate would be in his early 80s.

The roommate's name is Bill Moody. Mr. Crawford said that he that Bill Moody was a a native of Pecos and he thought that he was also a former county commissioner. He lost track of Moody after the year they roomed together. He does not even know if Bill Moody finished his education at Tech or somewhere else.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Bill Moody or knows one of his relatives, you may e-mail me with the information or write to Paul Crawford at 1100 Edgewood, Bryan, TX 77802.

A Pecos native, Sherley Glasscock Unger, was born in Pecos and remained there until she left for college. Sherley will celebrate her 80th Birthday on August 23, 2003. She has asked that her family and friends send her only "funny cards." If you are late in getting your card to her it will still be a wonderful surprise for her. A longtime friend sent me a picture of Sherley when she had been crowned Football Queen at PHS. She does not look exactly the same today but she continues to have the same inner beauty that shows in the PHS photo and again of her as Homecoming Queen at TCU. All cards (including belated ones) should be sent to the following address: c/o Dennison 4403 Northside Parkway #1322 Atlanta, Georgia 30327

Thank you for helping us to "give" her a truly wonderful 80th Birthday. Few things are nicer than hearing from those whose paths have crossed with yours (Sherley's) many years ago or only recently. Your card will make this special Birthday be more meaningful than she had ever dreamed.

With sincere thanks, Sherley's younger sisters

I was driving by Warfield Truck Stop between Midland and Odessa on Monday and noticed a pickup selling PECOS CANTALOPE. I couldn't resist. The couple that were selling them had some sliced in the cooler. I got a bag of those and three more. The sliced ones in the bag were so sweet, I told my wife that I thought there was sugar added as a marketing trick. Well, I was wrong. We cut another today for my breakfast and it was heavenly. God put his sugar in them just as he did when I was a young child. When we start to think that God has forsaken our dry caliche West Texas, I will always remember that He has taken the time to put a drop of His sweetness on each melon that grows in our beautiful part of the Great State of Texas.

To Rudy Carrasco and family. No words can express the sorrow I feel for you and your family. My prayers and thoughts are with you. My brother Mike mentioned to me that he had just spent the friday before this terrible accident with you and your family and had mentioned how precious your children are and I know he is feeling the grief as well. The days ahead are gonna be long and very difficult. The only way I have been able to deal with my grief is with the Lords help and with lots of prayers.

We can't even imagine what it is like to lose a spouse and a child at the same time. But we do want you to know we are all praying for you and your family.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SECOND ANNUAL BALMORHEA BIRDFEST:

Please join us for our Second Annual Balmorhea Birdfest. One of The Nature Conservancy's premier holdings, the Davis Mountains Preserve, is included among the guided birding tours offered to participants. Other birding sites will include the Weinacht Ranch, K.C. Ranch, Buffalo Trail Boy Scout Ranch and Lake Balmorhea. Our event is a package, which includes all tours, meals (three breakfasts, two lunches and three dinners) as well as evening presentations. Please note that all tours, with the exception of Lake Balmorhea, are on private lands that are off-limits to the public.

Description of tours and programs:

Davis Mountains Preserve:

This preserved Nature Conservancy property, a pristine oak-juniper woodlands, hosts (among other species) Mountain Chickadee, Acorn Woodpecker, White-breasted Nuthatch, Stellar's Jay, possible Townsend's Solitaire and Williamson’s Sapsucker. Numerous rarities have been found in the Davis Mountains Preserve, including fall gems such as Pinyon Jays, Clark’s Nutcrackers, Red Crossbills and Cassin’s Finches.

Weinacht Ranch: Family owned and operated cattle ranch offers opportunities to search for overwintering and resident grassland birds such as sparrows (including Sage Sparrow). Lark Bunting, Pyrrhuloxia, Cactus Wren, Verdin, Greater Roadrunner, Brewer’s and Black-throated Sparrows are among virtual certainties. Golden Eagle possible, also Crissal Thrasher, lingering Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Cassin’s Kingbird. Best chance for sighting Burrowing Owl.

Buffalo Trail Boy Scout Ranch: Road to Ranch passes through foothill brush country where Verdin, Cactus Wren, Pyrrhuloxia, Curve-billed Thrasher, Lark Bunting and Black-throated and Black-chinned Sparrows are found. Montezuma Quail and Phainopepla are possible - also Sage and Crissal Thrasher. Canyon area hosts Rock and Canyon Wrens. Hike up canyon to "Needle Point" may yield others.

K. C. Ranch: Large working cattle ranch has been family owned and operated since 1876. Like the other two participating ranches, this one has not been open to birders before. Habitat ranges from desert grass/shrub-scrub to riparian on elevations ranging from 4000' to 6000'. Possibilities include: Lewis' and Acorn Woodpeckers, Phainopepla, Pyrrhuloxia, Cactus Wren, Roadrunner, Scaled Quail, Sage Thrasher. Montezuma Quail may be possible.

Lake Balmorhea: Reservoirs are a rarity in the arid Trans-Pecos and are guaranteed to be bird magnets. At Lake Balmorhea, water impounded for agricultural use covers more than five hundred acres, providing waterfowl with excellent winter habitat. In early November, the lake is carpeted with waterfowl. Common Loons are regular and one or more Pacific Loons is found annually. There are multiple Red-throated Loon records and even one for Yellow-billed Loon. Three species of mergansers -- Hooded, Common and Red-breasted - can be seen in a single day’s birding, along with both Clark's and Western Grebes. Bald Eagle possible. Desert rarities such as Surf Scoters always possible. Rarities are often recorded at Lake Balmorhea. Past records include Black-legged Kittiwake, White-winged Scoter, Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck and others. Some shorebirds. This tour includes a section of Weinacht Ranch along cottonwood riparian zone, through shrubland and grasslands.

Limited Mobility Birding: Friday and Saturday will be designed by selecting easy to reach sections of above ranches. Davis Mountains Preserve will not be included. Lake Balmorhea will be included for one of the days.

A few years ago, my wife and I attended an FBI Academy Alumni Conference in El Paso. My grandmother had lives in Wink, TX many years ago, and I always wanted to go there, just out of curiosity. Well, on the way back, we went to Wink, and it was not what I expected. I liked though. I could live there. Hardly saw any people. Maybe they were at dinner. Didn’t see a restaurant, nor motel, otherwise we would have spent the night. Was surprised to see the Roy Orbison Museum there though. It was closed. We drove by the High School, there were some kids in the distance, and they waved to us, and that was nice, as we are older people.

Getting back to the cantaloupes, we’d heard about how good the Pecos ones were, and of course thought it was just some publicity thing, and didn’t pay attention to it. Well on the road from Wink to Kermit, we saw a small hatchback vehicle, with about four young people in it, and the rear end of that car was almost touching the ground. It was full of cantaloupes, we guessed Pecos ones. It was quite funny as they drove by blew the horn and waved.

Well we could not find a place to sleep at in Kermit, so made it into Odessa, where we found a small motel, and quite a nice one, with a super price, and spent the night there. The next day we made our way on to Austin, TX, but stopped at a store, it may have been Wal-Mart, in San Angelo. Well Lo and Behold, there were Pecos Cantaloupes displayed in their food section. I don’t recall the price, but it was very reasonable. Remembering the saying that Pecos Cantaloupes so good and sweet we bought four. (Wish I’d of bought a dozen) We put one in the cooler and the rest in the back of the truck. After dinner that night in Austin, we decided to taste the cantaloupe. Well, words can’t describe the flavor and sweetness of it. We thoroughly enjoyed all of those melons. Wish we didn’t live so far away, because I could eat one now.

I just wanted you to know how much the enjoyed the cantaloupes that came from Pecos. It is not necessary to answer this email, but should you, do you know if there is any place in Louisiana where Pecos cantaloupes are shipped and sold? I live in a small town, Houma, La. Thanks. Godfrey J. Buquet.

My home email is godfrey@cajun.net. GJB.

I grew up in Pecos and have visited Pecos Gab frequently. I maintain a list of PHS Grads with e-mail addresses, 1939-1950. As an adopted child, the following press release is very dear to my heart. You can find my "adoption story" and other family/Pecos links on my homepage: http://www.raymack.com/

Its a long shot, but if only ONE PERSON reading Pecos Gab should find an interested in the following Press Release, I would be thrilled!

PRESS RELEASE: Adoption, Abilene, Texas, Reverend Nicholas, West Texas Children's Aide Society... Do any of these words trigger your memory, or make you think of someone you know? If so, you will be interested in an a meeting in Abilene on August 8-10. Here is why...

The West Texas Children's Aide Society (WTCAS) was an adoption agency in Abilene, operated by Reverend Nicholas between 1915 and 1945. Hundreds of children were placed for adoption through this agency, mostly in Texas. It was closed down a few years after the death of Reverend Nicholas, a Baptist preacher.

In 2000, a WTCAS adoptee named John DeBusk created a webpage on the internet, seeking to find other adoptees, their children or parents. http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/adoptee/ To date, 20 people with ties to WTCAS have "found each other" and formed a warm, supportive and helpful group. We are exchanging our adoption stories, searching for our birth parents or children given up for adoption, and enjoying a common bond.

August 8-10 2003, we will have an inaugural meeting of WTCAS members in Abilene. We hope that publicizing our meeting will make others with a link to WTCAS aware of our organization. We also welcome anyone who is interested or curious about adoption. We will share our stories, hear some interesting speakers, and visit the former locations of WTCAS. For complete information about our meeting, please check our website (above), or call or e-mail: Ray M. Thompson 972/231-0765

Hello to all of my friends who read the gab. I am George Toone and I wanted to pass along some information. My parents Dale and Sue Toone are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on the 16th of June. We are holding a come and go get together for them on Saturday, June 14th from 2:00 until 5:00 in the afternoon at the Saragosa Multipurpose Center. I would like to urge any of their friends who are in the area to stop by and to wish them well and to congratulate them on this huge milestone. I owe my parents a great deal as they raised me to be the person I have become, and though I am far from perfect, I commend them for doing their best during my growing up years and beyond. I know that many of you know them and have known them for years and those of you who do know them, are aware of what I mean. Even though they are my parents, they are outstanding, in my opinion, both as individuals and as a family. My brother and I owe them a great deal. I wouldn't take for my time of living in the Pecos and Balmorhea area. I appreciated the small town life, all of my friends, and a firm and solid Christian foundation on which my life was built. Thanks to others of you who have meant a great deal to myself and to my family. Please email me if you would like as I always like to communicate with friends and if you run across either of my parents, please congratulate them on 50 years of marriage. Doesn't seem possible. After all, I can't be close to that age? 20.

I am very glad to see that Johnny' s jersey was retired in honor of his sacrifice for his country. It makes me, as a military spouse, feel that my husband's job does make a difference in the scheme of life even in Pecos, Texas. My husband and I were very saddened to hear about Johnny. My condolences go out to his family. My husband went to school with him and it brought the whole war closer to home. He was deployed to Iraq on April 6 with 1-13th Armor out of Fort Riley, KS. He will be very happy to hear about the honor you gave to Johnny and in turn to all of the fighting men and women! Thank you for supporting your troops!!

Sincerely, Machelle Taylor Fort Riley, KS

From: Pegzboots@aol.com

Dear Friends, As many of you know, my father, Leon McCracken (husband of Peggy McCracken, the originator of this site), passed away on the 28th of May. Thank you for all the good wishes and prayers. On behalf of the family, I'd like to share a few details and answer a few questions in this way, if you will indulge me ( I guess Martha Stewart and Emily Post would disapprove, but I hope our friends will understand).

My father was 76 and in the end his heart just finally wore out. We had been told he would never survive the heart surgery he had after a massive coronary in 1984. We feel truly blessed that God saw fit to show the doctors who is really in charge and let us enjoy my father's company here on earth for almost twenty more years!! But Daddy had been slowly going downhill recently, and weighed against the possibility of his being bedridden indefinitely after this last episode, we believe God's wisdom won out again when He decided the time had come.

My father asked to be baptized before he died, and my mother says he was lucid and at peace after that, right to the end. When you pray for my family, please remember to thank God for that... it is a great comfort to us.

My mother is a strong woman, and one of the most steadfast Christians I have ever known. Even now, while we are trying to be there for her, she is the solid steel core of our family, rock steady in her belief that God knows what he's doing and despite what we might selfishly have wished for Daddy, the Lord NEVER GETS IT WRONG. Joined together in that belief, we are all handling it pretty well (with a little help!).

I've received numerous cards and emails wondering what to do for the family .... is there a charity, etc. Please don't feel obligated -- your friendship and prayers are so valued. But if you wish, the family would be pleased to know that contributions however large or small had been made in Daddy's memory to the church library Mother began work on over 20 years ago. Given what was in Daddy's heart just before he died, we think that would please him too.

Library Fund West Park Baptist Church P. O. Box 1710 Pecos, Texas 79772

Thank you all again for your prayers and wishes. (And a SPECIAL thank you to everyone who helped cover for me when I went to be with my family!!) Peg II (and the family of Leon McCracken)
