I would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support for the Mata family. Johnny was my very best friend and the brother I never had. We grew up together just living right across the alley from each other. Johnny's friendship was of the purest. I could not have asked for a better friend. I will forever be greatful to have had Johnny in my life, and because of that, I am a better person. I will always miss him, but Johnny will live on in my memories and in my heart. There will be no place where I go that Johnny won't be with me.

Tonight, we will be honoring Johnny at the All Sports Banquet. His #60 football jersey will be retired and an award which will be called the Johnny V. Mata Proud Eagle Memorial Award will be presented to a Senior football player. This award will be given annually. The Pecos Athletic Booster Club is to be thanked for this award.

Again, thank you all for your continuing support, and may God Bless You All!

First, a word of condolence and comfort to the Family of Johnny Matta; Greater Love hath no man, but that he would give up his life for his friends. Sounds to me like that's exactly what he did. Didn't know the Man, but I honor him just the same. Now for any old friends of mine who read this page, I finally got into the 21st century and built me a computer. You can reach me at jdpecos@hotmail.com.

Thanks to Jim and Jeannie for this website. J. D. Bell

It’s a great idea to retire Johnny Matta’s football number. This is a excellent way to remember a fallen hero. Also, I would like to pass on my congratulations to the people who were so considerate to have thought of the idea.

I have had several people ask me for the name of the song that I dedicated to Our Fallen Heroes from Pecos. For any one else interested in the name of the Christian song. It is "I can only imagine" from Mercy Me
