I have had several people ask me for the name of the song that I dedicated to Our Fallen Heroes from Pecos. For any one else interested in the name of the Christian song. It is "I can only imagine" from Mercy Me

Hello Friends, Family, and Pecos in General, I was sadden when I heard of Johnny and all of his comrades of the military forces. Being an ex-military myself it sure hits close to home, but knowing Johnny it really hits a lot closer. First I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the Mata family and all their relatives. Johnny and I were friends in high school and I must say it was an honor knowing him. On and off the field, of football, Johnny was a class act, no one could ask for a better friend. We'll miss you Johnny and you will never be forgotten. One of our own is an American "HERO"!

To Quote Jesse: "For all the others who have served or are serving in the military - thank you. Your efforts are what makes this country great."

Hello Friends,

Its been a while since Johnny's funeral. For those of you who could not attend, rest assured that he received all the honor that he deserved. It was the largest funeral in the history of Pecos and no one was surprised by the size. The nature of funerals is to come together to reflect on the life of a loved one. That's exactly what we did. Johnny will be missed and never forgotten. My deepest sympathy to his family. May the peace and love of Jesus Christ comfort you in your loss.

For all the others who have served or are serving in the military - thank you. Your efforts are what makes this country great. We took some pictures of friends who gathered to honor Johnny. If anyone is interested in seeing them, please let me know.

Jesse

First of all, I want to extend my sincerest sympathies to Nancily and children, to Mr & Mrs Matta, Mingo, Albert & Rosa for their loss of our Beloved Johnny......Johnny and I were friends from the time we started school at Lamar Elementary until the day we graduated from Pecos High School. There are so many good memories that I can recall about Johnny because we grew up in the same neighborhood and went to school together. Whether we were all playing with each other or even fighting, we always remained friends. He will always be in our hearts and will never be forgotten. We Love You Johnny! You will always be our HERO!!! Jessica Franco Garcia

My condolence to the family and friends of Johnny. Johnny's death on the battlefield will not be forgotten. He is our fallen hero. A great lesson for our younger generation; the price of freedom comes with a price. The price Johnny paid will make the world a safer place for us, our children, and hopefully many generations to come. May Johnny rest in peace. For Mingo Jr and Albert, my prayers are with you and your families. My heart is heavy with the loss of your brother. For the citizens of Pecos, thank you in advance for honoring one of our own and his family. Respectfully, Chief Warrant Officer-3 Mario G. Villescas, U. S. Marine Corps, Kuwait.

This is Jim Edwards (Class of 76). Thanks for the Pecos Gab site. My buddy Johnny Davis (Class of 75) tipped me about this site and through it I was able to get in touch with my friend Marty Fielder, who I hadn't seen in over 20 years. I would like to request information from anyone viewing this site as to how I might be able to locate the following people: Jerry Edwards, Mike and Norma Arvizu, Randy Blount, Ricky Dominguez, Thomas Hurley, Victor Moran and James Williams. In addition, I knew a number of members of every graduating class from 1975 through 1979 and would be delighted to hear from anyone who might care to drop me a line. My email address is eire38@hotmail.com.

I would like to close by extending my sympathy to the family and friends of Johnny Mata. I appreciate what he and all our servicemen and women have done in what I feel has been a justifiable war.

My brother, Danny Reyes, and I were recently talking about the loss of Johnny Mata. My brother has two sons and he told me something that put things in perspective: he said he recently had a talk with his sons and he told them to think about who the TRUE heroes are. They are not the pro-sports stars nor the actors in movies. He told them to look upon Johnny as their hero.

So many times kids are influenced by their peers or other forces. I encourage the youth to take my brother's advice and reevaluate those they call "Hero". I am also proud of how our town has pulled together for the family of Johnny Mata.

Just want to send my prayers out to the Mata family. It took a little time for the news to get out here to the ship, but it did hit home. We are currently flying air coverage for the troops in Iraq from the carrier HARRY S. TRUMAN. Although hard to lose a loved one, it was not in vane. Johnny gave his life not only for the freedom of all Americans, but for the freedom of those in a country that until now, have not known what freedom truely is. Johnny is a hero as our all of our service members. God Bless you Mata family.

Our Condolences to the Mata Family, It is difficult to understand how one person can cause so much horror and hate to innocent people of the world. Our U.S. troops were called to protect these people and to protect the freedom that we are privileged to enjoy in our daily endeavors. As we watch and listen to the news everyday, we pray that our men and women of the armed forces return home safe. It is impossible for most of us to understand how a single person in such a far away place, can cause so much hate and discontent. Our U.S. troops have been called upon to insure that the people of the world are safe and free. Johnny Mata was one of the brave soldiers that was called upon to help insure that freedom. Johnny stood tall to the occasion with pride and honor. It saddens all of us to hear that his life was taken by cowards, while helping the troops on the front lines. His courage will always be remembered and respected. We will miss Johnny and in our hearts know that his patriotism was for the good of the free people of the world. Our prayers go out to Johnny's family and friends,

Sincerely, The Salazar Family, Alonzo and Flavia,Noe & Family,Elizar & Family,Alonzo & Family

Johnny Mata is a hero and will not be forgotten. God Bless the ones he left behind! He truly is an inspiration to all of us. I will be teaching in Landstuhl next year and just returned from a visit to the Base. While eating at the hospital Jessica Lynch's family sat at a table next to us. Soldiers with broken arms, legs, etc. came through the line talking to other soldiers in desert fatigues telling them good luck that it is a life altering experience to be over there. I look into the faces of my students daily who have fathers and mothers in Iraq. Please pray for the safe return of all. Bena (Stickels) Leismann

JOHNNY. JOHNNY WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON AND MARKED A SPECIAL PLACE IN EVERYONE'S HEART IN PECOS ESPECIALLY THE ONES IN OUR CLASS OF 1986. WE ARE GOING TO MISS HIM TREMENDOUSLY. ME AND JOHNNY KEPT IN TOUCH THROUGH EMAIL AND HE SPOKE OF NACILY AND HIS KIDS ALL THE TIME. THEY WERE HIS PRIDE AND JOY. I SEND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO THEM. IT'S IRONIC THAT THE LAST TIME HE WROTE TO ME HE TOLD ME OF HIS DEPLOYMENT TO IRAQ AND I TOLD HIM TO KEEP IN TOUCH SO I WOULD KNOW HE WAS OKAY. WHO WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME I WOULD EVER HEAR FROM HIM. STAYING IN TOUCH IS A HARD THING BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN LIVES, BUT ITS THE TIME THAT JOHNNY TOOK JUST TO MAKE SURE HE KEPT IN TOUCH WITH HIS FRIENDS THAT MAKES HIM THE WONDERFUL PERSON THAT HE WAS. AGAIN, TO HIS PARENTS MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES GO OUT TO YOU AND A GREATER THANKS FOR GIVING US A CHANCE TO KNOW SUCH A WONDERFUL PERSON THAT HAS MADE A BIG MARK IN OUR LIVES...HE IS A TRUE HERO AND WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED.....FROM MIAMI , FLORIDA ERLINDA NATIVIDAD

My prayers go out to the POW/MIAs and the families of all the POW/MIAs in Iraq and all of our brave soldiers in the Iraqi Theatre, in Afganistan, and throughout the world. I was shocked and saddened to see that one of the MIAs is from Pecos. My heart and prayers go out to the Mata family. As a veteran, it saddens me to know that any of our troops are in harms way. As a "Pecosite at heart", it saddens me to know that one of our own is unaccounted for in a combat theatre. But, as an American, it gives me great pride in our service men and women that protect our way of life on a daily basis. Our military, as well as our Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Emergency Medical Personell, and our Veterans are truely National Heroes. Once again, my prayers are with CWO Mata, his family, and the town of Pecos.

Lest We Forget. Martin Gomez

Dear Friends, On Sunday, March 9th, my 4 year old nephew, Michael Valenzuela, was in a motorcycle accident. He is the son of my youngest sister, Esmeralda (Esmie) Rodriguez Valenzuela & Michael Valenzuela. He suffered severe head trauma and underwent emergency brain surgery. The Dr. gave him only a 20% chance of pulling through. Thank God he made it through that and is continuing to show signs of improvement. He is currently in Lubbock, TX at the Texas Tech University Medical Center. He is still very critical but we are expecting a miracle. Our God is an AWESOME GOD and He hears our prayers. His word says "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." Matthew 18: 19-20. I ask for your prayers for his complete healing and will update you on the miraculous recovery. Please pass this on to your e-mail buddies so we can extend the circle of prayer. Thank you and God Bless all of you.

I'm Jim Strother ('67). Julie and I taught and coached in Pecos from ('71-'76).

Our daughter Jenni (who was born in '74) married in January. We're rather proud of our son-in-law, too. There are pictures for viewing, if you want to close the time warp a little. http://www.johnnyandjenni.com

Viewing requires a free registration process on the "View" link, but there's no need to buy. Just look until you're tired of it.

The wedding was at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston.

If you want some information on Johnny, check out http://www.johnnydrums.com. He's a good guy!

I love that the Pecos Enterprise is now on-line. I especially love Pecos Gab. Although I frequently speak with my grandmothers and aunt, Olga Armendariz, who still live in Pecos, it is nice to keep up with the development of Pecos - its business news, sports news, entertainment, etc. Although I have not lived there for 14 years, I am still very proud of Pecos.

My name is Chastidy Spinicci (formerly Armendariz). I am the granddaughter of Virginia Armendariz and Eugene Baeza, as well as the granddaughter of Angelita Carrasco and Leandro Orona. (My other aunt is county clerk, Diana Flores.)

My mother, Doris Armendariz, and I moved away when I was 17 years old. I am now married and living in Clifton Park, NY (a suburb of Albany, the capitol of New York State) with my husband, Chris and my two beautiful daughters, Halle Nikole (age 5) and Hanna Taylor (age 2). After 7 years in the legal profession working as a paralegal, I decided to stay home with my girls because I could not bear nor justify being away from them 55 hours a week and pay $1,300/mo for daycare (which, incidentally, is more than my mortgage payment).

I am attaching a link to the website created by my nephew. They are Thanksgiving 2002 pictures of all of us and Christmas Eve 2002 pictures of the girls. I am sending them so that I can share photos of my family with long-lost friends and family in Pecos. The link is as follows: http://www.webshots.com/user/goldavenger.

Thank you for your time in reading this e-mail. May God bless you all. Sincerely, Chastidy Spinicci, 6 Lexington Ct, Clifton Park, NY 12065 (518) 383-6516.
