Billie Earline Bickley

Billie E. Bickley, 86, of Pecos, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2007, in Midland. She was born October 17, 1920, in Ft. Worth, Texas to Metta Lee and Clarence E. Shields.

Billie graduated from Abilene High School and from McMurray College, also in Abilene. While in college, she met her soul mate, Bob Bickley, and they married June 18, 1941, almost 66 years ago.

World War II broke out six months later and Billie followed Bob to boot camp in El Paso to take care of him, as she did their entire marriage. Their first child, Linda, was born there in 1943. Bob spent the next two and a half years in Europe; Billie and Linda moved back to Abilene and to her parents to await his return.

In 1948, Billie, Bob, and their two daughters, moved to Pecos. Asked what she thought of Pecos, Billie replied, "It's okay, but I'd hate to think that I'd have to spend the rest of my life here." And that was fifty-nine years ago.

Billie spent those fifty-nine years caring for Bob and their three daughters. She was the ultimate homemaker: a wonderful cook, a talented seamstress, and devoted mother. For many years, Billie stayed up late at night sewing for her daughters. As an art and clothing design major in college, she could look at a picture, grab a newspaper and begin cutting out a pattern to sew. Her daughters always had the best play clothes, school clothes, Halloween costumes, formals, and wedding dresses.

After many years of being a "stay-at-home" mom, Billie went back to teaching and was in room 23 at South Pecos Elementary, now Austin Elementary, for twenty years. She impacted many lives, loving her sixth-graders and the math that she taught them. She was even honored as Teacher of the Year by the Pecos Chamber of Commerce.

After retiring, Billie again picked up her watercolor brushes and was active in the Pecos Art Association. She was also busy with Pecos' Retired Teachers, serving on its executive committee more than once. Billie was also a long time member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and served on its Altar Guild.

Billie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bob Bickley, and her favorite and smartest "child", Lucy, a black lab.She is survived by three daughters: Linda Hayes of El Paso, Martee Stuart, and her husband, Bob, of Midland, Betsey Slack and her husband, Ken of Dallas. Billie is also survived by six grandchildren, Jennifer Perez, David Lumpkin and his wife, Adriana, Julie Davis and her husband, Don, Matthew Perez, Will Slack, Lee Slack; six great-grandchildren. Also surviving Billie is Ramona Salcido, loved as family, who cared for the Bickleys for thirty-eight years.

Jose Herrera

Jose Tavares Herrera, Sr., beloved husband, father, and TA left this world to be with our Lord and family on June 18, 2007, after a lengthy fight with Alzheimer’s.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in El Indio, Texas to Neponunceno and Jesus Herrera. At a very early age, Joe lost his mother and later this father. Joe and his brothers were raised by several loving aunts and uncles. These people opened their homes, shared their families and provided them with lots of love and the necessities of life. He treasured and loved each one dearly. They held a very special place in his heart. He would never forget what they did for him. Family was always very important to him, but more important - he always wanted to give back to those he most loved.

Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was very proud that he was also able to serve his country. He often spoke of his travels and good friends he met during this time of his life. One special friend being, Rudy Candelaria. After his term in Japan was up, Joe lived with Rudy and his family. Here he found a second Mom, “Mama Candelaria” who treated him just like one of her own sons. His love for Mama Candelaria never left him…during his illness he would speak of her time and time again.

The time came for Joe to marry. Jose and Luz Vasquez had the honor of asking for his lovely bride’s hand in marriage. Joe and Bea were married on April 28, 1956. Joe and Bea were married for 51 years. They had two children Debra Ann and Jose Jr. “Joey.” They raised their children in Pecos. Joe loved his children - they were his world. He loved them so - that he instilled the importance of family and getting a good education. He was determined his children would graduate from high school and go on to college. Both children received their college degrees making him ever so proud. He was even more proud of his granddaughters when he attended their high school graduations plus attending another college graduation in the same year. He beamed for weeks talking about his girls.Joe was employed by Toones Grocery. Over a period of 45 years, not only did he work at Toones, this became his other family. Jimmy Toone and Joe worked together to help the people of this community. He watched so many children come through the doors and later come back as adults “full grown” as he would say. They held a very special place in his heart. He loved treating them to candy and a coke after they showed him their report cards or maybe it was their birthday. Shy children who would never speak - well Joe found ways for them to finally open up. It made him feel so special when as adults they would come and thank him for all he did. His special children are now all over the world. After many years of dealing with his illness one of his special children came to visit him - he was so excited he cried when they told him they had to leave. Joe touched so many people in so many different ways - these are memories that will be treasured by all who knew him.

Joe was a very simple and humble man. All he needed in his life was his family. His life revolved around his family. Family was the most important thing. Joe and Bea worked very hard to help provide a good, loving Christian home for their family. Then came the grandchildren. TA has left his grandchildren so many fond memories from curing any ailment with a can of 7-Up, going to swim meets, school functions, softball games, going on picnics and eating “Cowboy Beans” and barbequing chicken on his day off. TA always wanted to be there - why - because it was important to his grandchildren. TA was such a loving model for his grandbabies…as he would always say “That’s what I’m here for.”He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Benito Vasquez, Polito Vasquez, Lupe Vasquez, grandson, Jonathan and daughter-in-law Elsa.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Bea Herrera; daughter and husband Debbie and Saul Flores, son and wife, Joey and Monica Herrera. Grandchildren Sarah Catherine, Kelsey Jane, Devan and Tatyana Ines. Brothers Lamberto Herrera and wife Josepha, Frank Vasquez and wife Martha, Ramon Vasquez and wife Anita, sister Manuela Urias. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and Godchildren. Sonia Madrid, caregiver, who was our angel sent from God above who took such good care of Daddy during his lengthy illness.

Daddy will truly be missed, but one this is for sure - he has left this family with lots of love and wonderful memories. The legacy he has left behind is one of love, compassion and thankfulness to all who loved him. He has joined his family in heaven whom he missed and longed to be with. He was so devoted to Our Lady - he had the faith that the Virgen De Guadalupe would one day guide him to his mom. We pray for the day when again we will be reunited with Daddy and all our family members who have gone to join our Lord. The family would like to thank: Dr. Darpolar, his staff, Dr. Moorthi, Dr. Cerna, the staff at Reeves County Hospital, Pecos Ambulance Service, the staff at American Home Health, Mr. and Mrs. John Rediger and staff, Leo Hung, Steve Valenzuela and staff, Mr. Natividad. To the nurses at Reeves County Memorial - You all took such good care of Daddy. To all who have supported us all through Daddy’s illness - with words of encouragement and prayers. To all our family and friends for their flowers, food, cards, and phone calls during this time - God has truly sent this family angels - May we one day be able to thank you for all that you have done for this family. You all hold a very special place in our hearts. May God Bless you all.

William “Bob” Bickley

William R. “Bob” Bickley, 88, of Pecos, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2007, in Midland. Bob was born September 22, 1918, in Merkel, Texas to Josephus and Mabel Bickley.

Bob graduated from Merkel High School and McMurray College in Abilene. While in college he met Billie Shields. They married in 1941 and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last June.

Bob served in the Army during World War II. His war tour took him to England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre, a medal for bravery, given by the French government.

Not long after returning to the U.S., Bob took a job with Anderson Clayton and moved to Pecos. Although the ACCO facility changed hands a couple of times, Bob stayed put. He truly loved his community. During the 60 years he lived in Pecos he served his city as school board member, as city Councilman, and as Mayor. The city in turn honored him as “Citizen of the Year”. There is also a street bearing his name.

Bob was a long time member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he served on the Bishop’s Committee a number of times.

He was involved in all aspects of agriculture throughout his career. Bob ultimately formed a cooperative oil mill that served gins from Reeves County to the panhandle. West Texas Cooperative Oil Mill was a venture that served the local farmers and beyond. It was probably on of the most satisfying things of his career. In later years he was the director of Trans Pecos Cotton Association. Throughout his years in agriculture he served as president of the Texas Cottonseed Crushers Association and as a director of the National Cotton Council. He participated in cotton trade negotiations on behalf of the State Department. He was a grower, a miller, a crusher, a lobbyist, and an all-around advocate for the farmer. Other community involvements were serving on boards of director for the Security State Bank and Balmorhea Ranchers.

Bob was an avid sportsman, finding great joy in teaching the sport of hunting to his grandsons. He tolerated camping with his family and ran a temperature every time Billie made him do something that he didn’t want to do. That being said, he dearly loved his family and would have done anything in his ability to care for them.

Survivors include his wife, Billie; a daughter, Linda Hayes of El Paso; a daughter and son-in-law, Martee and Bob Stuart of Midland; a daughter and son-in-law, Betsey and Ken Slack of Dallas; six grandchildren: Jennifer Perez, David Lumpkin and his wife, Adriana; Julie Davis and her husband, Don; Matthew Perez, Will Slack, and Lee Slack.
