Pecos teams playing in Presidio tonight
The Pecos Eagles basketball teams will head south this afternoon to
Presidio, where both the boys and girls teams will be seeking their
first wins in District 4-3A play against the Blue Devils, who also will
be looking for their first district victories of 2004.
Pecos' girls will take on the Blue Devils in Presidio for the second
time this season, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by the boys' game
against the Blue Devils at about 7:30 p.m.
Both the Eagles and Blue Devils are 0-3 in district play, Pecos
after their 44-29 loss at home to Greenwood this past Friday and
Presidio after a 65-27 homecourt loss that night to Kermit. Back in
November, the Eagles went down to Presidio to open up the 2003-04
season and scored a 57-38 win over the Blue Devils. Vanessa Garcia had
18 points and Leslie Rodriguez put in 12 in that game.
Last season, the Eagles got their only district win at home over the
Blue Devils, but lost in Presidio after a non-district victory earlier
in the season. "We always seem to beat them in the first game of the
season, and then last year we beat them in the second game (in Pecos)
and then slacked off," said Eagles' coach Veronica Valenzuela. "We
can't take them lightly and be overconfident, but we do seem to have a
lot more confidence playing them than we do the other (district) teams,
because our girls know that they can beat them."
Presidio's boys swept the Eagles a year ago, but missed out on the
playoffs. However, the Blue Devils had one of the youngest teams in
district a year ago, and most of those players are back this season.
"They got a lot of easy baskets last year off penetration, and they
still have the same guards as last year," said Eagles' coach Joe
Flores. Jacob Ramirez led the Blue Devils to both their wins over
Pecos, getting 19 points in their 19-point win at Presidio.
"They've also got two posts who are about 6-3 and they can cause a
lot of problems for us. But I think we can handle them, and if we can
knock down a couple of jumpers, we'll be in the game," Flores said.
Pecos had trouble hitting any shots at all on Friday and had
problems handling Greenwood's big front line, as the No. 3-ranked
Rangers routed the Eagles, 70-27. Oscar Parada was the only Pecos
player in double figures, with 13 points.
