Pecos swimmers in Big Spring
for second invitational of year
The Pecos Eagle swim team will be one diver short today, when they
begin competition at the Big Spring Invitational. But Eagles' coach
Terri Morse said she'd have pretty much a full squad on Saturday, when
the timed finals of the swimming events are held at the Big Spring YMCA
pool.
The Eagles have swept their dual meets with Fort Stockton and
Monahans the past two weeks, after both the boys and girls finished
second at their season opening invitational at Odessa in early October.
Coach Terri Morse said most of her swimmers would be entered in the
same events as in Odessa. "With the boys, I tried to stack the relays
as best as possible, so we've had three really good relays and as many
'B' relays as we could."
She added that the boys would have one less 'B' relay due to the
absence of Michael Juarez, who was injured in an incident at Saragosa
Hall last Saturday. "Without Michael we had to scratch one 'B' relay,"
she said, and Juarez, who won the district and regional diving titles
last season, also will not compete tonight.
Morse said she also would have one less 'B' relay on the girls' side
on Saturday, after junior Sara Wein left the team.
Along with the Eagles and host Steers, Morse said, "Every other team
in the district except for Fort Stockton will be there." San Angelo
Central, Abilene High, Abilene Cooper and Odessa High and Odessa
Permian are among the other teams scheduled to compete in Big Spring.
Eagle 7th graders win, 8th, JV suffer losses

The Pecos Eagles' seventh graders picked up victories, while the eighth
grade and junior varsity squads dropped their sub-varsity football
games on Thursday to the Fort Stockton Panthers.
The seventh grade purple team improved to 7-0 on the season with a
34-8 victory at Fort Stockton, while the gold team edged the Panthers
by a 14-12 final score.
The results were reversed in the eighth grade, as the gold team was
edged by Fort Stockton, 20-16, while the purple team was routed by the
Panthers, 62-0.
In the JV game in Pecos, Fort Stockton also scored a big win, using
17 second quarter points to go on to a 38-6 win over the Eagles.
Fort Stockton took a 7-6 lead after one period of the JV game,
scoring on a 38-yard touchdown pass, while the Eagles scored on a
26-yard pass from Miguel Estrada to Luis Licon. But the Panthers then
scored two touchdowns in just over a minute in the second period, off a
46-yard TD run and a 42-yard interception return of a pass by Estrada.
The Panthers would add a field goal just before half time and score
twice more in the second half, off a 65-yard punt return and a 70-yard
touchdown run. The loss left the JV with a 2-7 record.
The seventh graders' win at Fort Stockton was more lopsided than
their earlier win at home over the Panthers. Hector Ramirez had two
touchdown runs and Jeremy Martinez had one for the purple team, while
Paul Zubledia passed 50-yard to Heath Armstrong and Linvel Mosby threw
30 yards to Timo Reyes for Pecos' other two scores.
The seventh grade gold team moved to 4-2 with their win, in what was
their last game of the season. Quarterback Jonathan Dominguez had two
short scoring runs and a two-point conversion for Pecos. The seventh
graders will close out their season with only one game next week, at
home against Greenwood.
The eighth graders also will have only one game against the Rangers
to end the season next week. The purple team fell to 1-5-1 with their
loss, while the gold team ended its 2003 season with a 3-3 record.
Vincent Palomino had both touchdowns for the gold team, while Martin
and Marcus Muniz scored the two-point conversions for the Eagles.
Tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Fort Stockton, the Eagles will play their
final road game of the season, against the Panthers. Fort Stockton has
won their last three meetings with Pecos, including a 26-20 loss in
their last visit to Fort Stockton, in 2000, when the Eagles missed a
game-winning extra point after tying the score on the final play of
regulation.
The loser of tonight's game will see their chances at the playoffs
ended. Meanwhile, Monahans, which already has clinched a playoff spot,
will try to claim the District 4-3A title at home tonight against
Kermit, which can move closer to a post-season berth with a victory
over the Loboes. Greenwood, which plays in Pecos next week, is idle
tonight.
Kermit (1-1 district, 5-3 season) at Monahans (3-0, 5-3): Going by
their two games in Pecos, the Loboes should be big favorites, since
they routed the Eagles last week, 37-0, while the Yellowjackets had to
eek out a 14-6 win. But going by their games with Greenwood, the Loboes
will have to fight to claim the 4-3A title outright. They edged the
Rangers at home to open district, 35-34, while Kermit led at Greenwood
in the fourth quarter of their last game, before the Rangers rallied
for a 22-20 win.
Kevin Kenyon had three touchdown passes a week ago and has thrown
for over 1,350 yards in eight games, while Kermit has had the more
balanced offensive attack, with Landon Forga throwing for 932 yards and
Randy Butterfield running for 517, despite missing the game in Pecos.
This is Monahans' final regular season game. Kermit, meanwhile, can
clinch a playoff spot with a victory and a win by Pecos over Fort
Stockton, who they host next Friday.
