Eagles show `bad side' in Andrews

Return to Menu

PECOS, Sept. 18 -- There hasn't been a lot of in-between play by the
Pecos Eagles volleyball team this season. They've either been very good
or very bad.

The former was on display in Game 1 of their match Tuesday night in
Andrews, as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead on the Mustangs on the way to
a 15-8 victory.

Unfortunately, the Eagles reverted to the latter in Games 2 and 3, when
they were unable to come up with a total of seven points combined,
losing to the defending District 4-4A champs, 15-3, 15-3 in the district
opener for both teams.

"It wasn't anything they did. We weren't mentally strong enough,"
Eagles' coach Nora Geron said.

Andrews had problems containing junior Lori Marquez in Game 1. She had a
trio of kills in the Eagles' 7-0 run after Andrews took a 1-0 lead. But
in the next two games it was Pecos' problems with blocker Kacee Connally
that was the difference.

"In the first game, we kept her (Lori) on the front line. After that we
couldn't get her off the back line," Geron said. "In the third game,
their scores were all with Lori on the back line."

In Game 2, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead only to see Andrews come back with
a 9-0 run to take command. Then in the deciding contest, the Mustangs
jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and after Pecos halved that margin Andrews
reeled off seven straight points, the final six in a row without Pecos
being able to break serve.

"We opened up the second game with a couple of missed serves, and they
jumped on that and we never recovered," Geron said. "We couldn't find a
place to hit and we didn't know what to do."

The loss dropped Pecos' season record to 8-11, while Andrews upped their
mark to 11-5. The Mustangs also won Tuesday's junior varsity match, by
15-6, 15-10 scores, while the freshmen teams split, with the Eagles'
purple team also losing by 15-6, 15-10 scores, while the gold team
downed Andrews, 15-3, 15-11.

The Eagles will be at home for their next district game, Saturday
afternoon against Sweetwater. The Mustangs had an unpleasant return to
4-4A play on Tuesday, as they were swept at home by San Angelo Lake
View, 15-5, 15-5.
