PECOS, June 3, 1996 - Pecos-Barstow Warbirds will be hoping to have
three fighters headed to Bryan-College Station on Thursday, to compete
in the State Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament.
Warbirds manager Fred Martin said Noel Jaramillo was being checked for
possible problems with his appendix, and might not fight this week. "The
other two look like they're ready to go," Martin added.
"Ricky Rubio and Jesus Marruffo look like they're in good condition," he
said. "The only problem right now is we need for Ricky to gain a little
weight. Usually the opposite is true.
"The limit is 132 pounds and if we need to get him up to at least
128-129 pounds I'll be happy," Martin said. "He's at 126 pounds right
now and is going to fight guys at 132, so we need to have him put on at
least a few more pounds."
Martin added that Marruffo "is right on it. He's in good condition, and
we shouldn't have any problems with him."
The Pecos fighters are among 25 representing West Texas at the state
tournament. Martin said the group would meet in Odessa on Thursday to go
to Bryan, and the fights will take place between Friday and Sunday.
"We won't know until we get there what the pairings are. They won't be
done until after they all get weighed in and get their physicals,"
Martin said.
Although the tournament is open to a variety of age groups, only winners
in the 15-16 year old age bracket will advance to the National Junior
Olympic Finals, set for July in Marquette, Mich.
