News from Oasis of West Texas

By DEBBBIE MEREDITH
Special Correspondent
Balmorhea ISD is in the process of adopting a drug testing
policy. This covers all students in grades 7-12 that
participate in UIL activities including both academic and
athelitic. The policy shall specify which students are to be
tested, when they are to be tested and what procedures are
to be followed and the use of a student assistance program.

There are four ofjectives of this policy: 1. To provide a
deterrent to drug use for all students who represent BISD in
contests or competitions. 2. To protect the health of
students from illicit drug use which substantilally disrupt
the school enviroment. 3. To insure health and safety of
participating students during their performances. 4. To
provide another opportunity and reason for students to avoid
drug use.

Balmorhea Superintendent Carl Hoffmeyer is encouraging
everyone to come by the school office to read over and
discuss any questions regarding the drug testing policy.

Some teachers still have report cards that parents need to
come by and pickup. You may contact the office for teacher
conference times so you may pick up your childs report card.

Rankin at 7:30 p.m. Lets all turn out in support of our

UIL students to attend meet

The Crockett Middle School Science and Math UIL/TMSCA
academic teams will be traveling to Ft. Stockton, Dec. 5,
1998.

The students will need to meet at Crockett Middle School at
5:30 am. The bus will be leaving at 6 a.m. Students need to
bring money for snacks. Lunch will be provided by the

40 active members. On Saturday, only 32 will be traveling to
the academic meet.

The coaches for the teams include, Guadalupe Paz-Math Coach,
Jim Workman-Science Coach. Both coaches are active members
of the TMSCA, Texas Mathematics-Sciences Coaches
Association. The teams are expecting a good turn out.

The students are actively involved in practicing for
competition. The coaches engage the students on the academic
team in active learning, through active stimulation in TAAS
oriented activities. The students on the team are very
active in learning and place great demands on the coaches.
It is a challenge to meet the demands of the students.
