Pecos girls' golf season opens Friday

PECOS, Jan. 30 -- Warmer weather is expected to arrive in the area just
in time for the Pecos Eagles girls golf team to open their 1997 season
this Friday and Saturday at the San Angelo Invitational.

It's the first of 10 tournaments this season for the varsity, which will
wrap up its season by hosting the final round of the District 4-4A
Tournament on April 12.

Regular season play for Pecos' boys will wait until next week to begin,
with the junior varsity opening up on Tuesday at Midland and the varsity
next weekend in Big Spring.

Coach Tina Hendrick has 12 golfers out this season, the most for the
girls team in over a decade. That includes almost all of her players
from a year ago, when Pecos finished sixth in the 4-4A tournament.

Lindley Workman, one of two seniors on the team this season, had the low
score for the Eagles in district last season, with a 268 over 54 holes
of play. The other returning senior for Pecos is Elvisa Morales (325),
while returning juniors are Belinda Heard (289), Anica Garcia (298) and
Kim Clark (298) and returning sophomores are Alva Alvarez (288) and
Sarah Armstrong (317).

The girls' other two district tournaments are in Andrews and San Angelo.
The Eagles will make an earlier non-district trip to Andrews, and also
have tournaments scheduled in Midland and El Paso.

They'll be going with the boys on Feb. 7-8 to Big Spring, which will
begin a seven tournament schedule for new coach Joe Wheeler's squad. The
boys don't have a home tournament this season, with district rounds in
Sweetwater, Fort Stockton and Big Spring.

Pecos ended up ninth last season in the 4-4A tournament, but closed
strong, finishing just five strokes in back of district runner-up
Andrews in the final round of play. Big Spring is the defending boys
champion.

Wheeler will have about nine players out this season, and like Hendrick,
will get back most of the varsity players from last season.

Sophomore Casey Love (252) had Pecos' low total in district last season,
while another sophomore, Lee Lyles, shot a 262, and juniors Jason
Salcido and Michael O'Callahan had 257 ad 276 rounds respectively in
district.
