Parade seeking entries, good weather Friday
By JENNIFER GALVAN
Staff Writer
PECOS, Wed., Dec. 4, 2002 -- With one Christmas ceremony cancelled Tuesday
night due to the weather, the Pecos Area Chamber of Commerce hopes
they will not have to postpone their annual Christmas Parade scheduled
for this Friday.
"We have ordered a nice evening for that day," Executive Director of the
Chamber of Commerce, Linda Gholson said.
The threat of bad weather forced postponement of the annual Community
Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on Tuesday night at Maxey Park. Gholson
said that if the weather becomes hazardous on Friday and threatens to make
people sick they would probably cancel the parade.
According to Lupe Davis also with the Chamber of Commerce they currently
have nine floats and are expecting more to sign up before Friday.
"Some wait till the last minute to sign up," Davis said. "We are still
taking applications."
"The best entry will win $100," she added.
The parade will be followed by the lighting ceremony at the Reeves County
Courthouse, starting about 7 p.m. on Friday. Children wanting to tell Santa
Claus what they would like under their Christmas tree will have the opportunity
to do so, Gholson said.
"Santa will be at the courthouse for children wanting to visit with him,"
Gholson said. "Or for parents wanting to take pictures."
Davis also said that the students in band would also be participating
in the parade.
Line up for the parade will begin at 5 p.m. at the high school parking
lot next to the band hall, Gholson said.
"The parade begins at 6 p.m.," Davis said.
The parade will begin next to Pecos High School on South Park Street and
will go up Washington to Eddy Street, and then north on Eddy and east on
to Third to Oak Street, where the parade will end on the west side of the
courthouse, Davis said.
The parade will then be followed by the lighting ceremony held at the
courthouse in which hot chocolate and cookies will be provided, Gholson said.
Both Gholson and Davis said that they would like for everyone to come
and participate and attend this year's parade.
"Anyone and everyone is welcomed to participate and attend the parade,"
Gholson said.
Gholson said that this year's Christmas Parade Theme is `A West Texas
Christmas.'
