Crockett 7th grade netters earn Monahans title

The Pecos Eagles' seventh grade tennis team picked up a division title and a first place title overall this past weekend in Monahans, while the eighth grade team had one second place finish in the tournament.

Crockett seventh graders Cielo Ornelas and Sassy Howard took first in girls doubles, while in mixed doubles the team of Liando Castaneda and Adriann Prieto finished second and Hunter Mata and Dana Conger placed third. The Eagles also had a third place finish in girls singles competition, from Alexis Machuca.

In the eighth grade division, the boys singles team of Michael Hardwick and Justin Workman earned a second place finish for Pecos.

Pecos girls earn two all-district berths

Pecos Eagles senior Gabby Garcia was selected to the first team All-District 4-3A basketball squad, while senior Kristen Ikler was named to the second team squad in voting by the district's coaches.

The team was chosen last week by the district's coaches, following the elimination of 4-3A champion Clint, second place Fort Stockton and third place Tornillo from the Class 3A playoffs.

Garcia was the Eagles' leading scorer for the second year in a row, and the only player to average over 10-points a game this season for Pecos, which was plagued by injuries during district and finished fourth in the 4-3A standings with a 4-6 record.

Garcia was a second-team selection as a sophomore forward, and was Most Valuable Player for District 2-3A in 2008, when Pecos won the district title. Ikler was a first team selection last season and was chosen to the second team this time around for her defensive play at guard for Pecos.

Seniors made up most of the first team selections on this year's all-district squad, including MVP Stephanie Palaver of Clint. Fort Stockton sophomore Abby Warnock was named Newcomer of the Year and Fabe's junior Emily Montenegro was chosen as defensive player of the year, while the rest of the first team was made up of senior Sarah Ramirez and sophomore Madelyn Care of Clint; senior Maribel Silas and junior Cynthia Ferro of Fort Stockton; seniors Grissel Reyes and Priscilla Padilla of Tornillo; senior Mandy Sepulchral of Fabe's and senior Lourdes Ramirez of Anthony.

The rest of the second team squad was made up of seniors Liana Renter of Clint, Lucy Callida of Tornillo, Marissa Juarez and Mary Gonzales of Fort Stockton; junior Annette Escondido of Clint and sophomores Roxy Garcia and Ashley Spence of Fabe's.

Clint's John Willdon and Fort Stockton's Kym Kyla shared Coach of the Year honors. Clint went 10-0 in district before losing to Region I-3A champion Lubbock Establish in the area round of the playoffs, while Andrews defeated Fort Stockton and Midland Greenwood beat Tornillo in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

Eagles hosting five area teams at Pecos Relays

The Pecos Eagles will be hosting five other area track teams in the girls division and four others on the boys' side this Saturday, for the West of the Pecos Relays, starting at 9:30 a.m. at Eagle Stadium.

Coach Derek Price said Fort Stockton, Midland Christian, Kermit and Presidio would make up the field on the boys' side, while Monahans would also be entered in the girls' division.

Field events are scheduled to get underway with the varsity boys shot put and high jump; the varsity girls discus and pole vault and the junior varsity boys long jump and JV girls triple jump at 9:30, followed by the finals of the 3200 meter run at 9:45 a.m. The field events will begin at 2 p.m. with the 400 meter relay.

The Eagles will have a few additional people available this week on both the boys and girls' sides, after the boys scored 56 points and the girls 36 last Saturday at the season-opening Comanche Relays.

Coach Dee Dee Molinar said she would have some girls available from softball, which plays its district opener against Fort Stockton on Friday, and was in Seminole last week, during the Comanche Relays. Price said he would add some runners who were involved in swimming last week, with Pecos competing at the Class 4A state championships in Austin.

However, the boys will still have a couple of people missing due to the Eagles' baseball tournament in Snyder, while the girls will be without several competitors who'll be at the Region I powerlifting competition in Clyde on Saturday.

Eagles qualify 20 lifters for regional competition

Eight Pecos Eagle girls qualified for the Region I powerlifting championships this Saturday at Clyde, while a dozen boys earned spots in their regional meet, scheduled for March 14 in Levelland.

Several of the lifters earned their berths this past weekend, at the Reagan County meet in Big Lake, while others skipped the final regular season event, having already qualified in the Eagles' previous meets.

Among those who skipped last Saturday's meet were senior Job Darpolor and freshman Josephine DDarpolor, both of whom are No. 1 seeds in their weight classes. Job Darpolor is seeded first at 198 pounds, with his best combined lifts in the bench press, squat thrust and dead lift totaling 1,470 pounds. Josephine Darpolor is seeded first in the girls' 220-pound weight class, with combined lifts of 960 pounds.

Others earning spots with finishes in the Top 10 for the boys include Aza Hinojos and Zack Rayos, seeded second and sixth at 114 pounds; Jared Rodriguez and Joel Jaramillo, seeded third and seventh at 123 pounds; Stephen Apolinar, seeded third at 148 pounds; Lomas Gonzales, seeded fifth at 165 pounds; Nick Granado, seeded fourth at 181 pounds; Jake Varela, seeded ninth at 198 pounds; Enrique Sotelo, seeded fourth at 220 pounds; Alonzo Villalobos, seeded third at 242 pounds; and Louis Rodriguez, seeded 10th in the super heavyweight division.

The girls' other regional qualifiers were Carmen Alonzo, seeded ninth at 97 pounds; Carissa Cerna, seeded second at 132 pounds; Mayra Morena, seeded 11th at 148 pounds; Catherine Moore and Krystle Ramirez, seeded eighth and ninth at 181 pounds; and Ysabel Salgado and Destiny Simmons, seeded ninth and 10th at 198 pounds.

Coach Jeff Green said on the boys' side, Donovan Rodriguez would be a regional alternate, while the girls would have Marlyn Serrano as an alternate, but will go without last year's state qualifier in the 242 and up division, De Andra Bailey, due to gall bladder surgery.

In last Saturday's meet at Reagan County, Pecos' girls had one first place finish, by Ysabel Salgado, who took the 198-pound weight class with combined lifts of 690 pounds. Simmons was third with a 645-pound total and Marlyn Serrano was fourth, with a 595-pound total.

Placing second in the 97-pound weight class was Alonzo, with a 330-pound lift, while Kayla Natividad was second at 114 pounds, with a 430-pound total. Mayra Moreno was third and Miren Hinojos sixth at 148 pounds, with lifts of 620- and 450-pounds; Ashley Jaso was fifth at 105 pounds with a 375-pound total; Vivian Lazcano was fifth at 123 pounds, with a 450-pound total; and Desiree Olivas took eighth in the 132-pound division, with combined lifts of 420 pounds.

The boys had two division winners at Big Lake; Jared Rodriguez at 123 pounds and Alonzo Villalobos at 242 pounds. Rodriguez lifted a combined 820 pounds to take his division, while Joel Jaramillo was third at 630 pounds, while Villalobos won his weight class with a combined 1,345 total, with Gilbert Sotelo seventh in that division, with a 1,090 total.

Aza Hinojos and Zach Rayos were second and third in the 114-pound weight class, with lifts of 745 and 685 pounds. Also placing second, at 181 pounds, was Nick Granado, with a combined 1,120 total, while Lomas Gonzales was third at 165 pounds, with a 1,090-pound total; Enrique Sotelo was third at 220 pounds, with a 1,220-pound total; and Arturo Villa was fourth at 198 pounds, with a 965-pound total.

Eagle golfers in Andrews, Lubbock for tournaments

The Pecos Eagle girls golf team will be Lubbock this weekend for a Class 3A regional tournament preview after finishing fifth this past Saturday in Fort Stockton, while the boys will be in Andrews on Friday and Saturday after taking seventh in Lubbock last weekend in their own Class 3A regional preview tournament.

Pecos shot a 328-344-672 to place in the middle of the 16-team field. Gatesville shot a 628 to win first place, eight shots ahead of Graham, while Borger was next, 14 strokes back at 650. Snyder and Andrews tied for fourth with 662 totals, while the Eagles were one shot in back Glen Rose, and five in front of Levelland, who they were able to move past for seventh place during the final round of play.

“It wasn't just that we had trouble. Everybody had trouble Saturday,” coach Gaylon Doan said, though several other teams that finished behind Pecos overall, including District 4-3A rival Fort Stockton, were able to catch the Eagles on Saturday.

“It was windy and cold, but still everybody's got to play in it,” Doan said. “We we are working on this week is mental lapses. When we hit a bad shot, we want to come back and hit another shot right away, and that's what we've been working on. When we get in trouble, instead of getting a bogey, we do things to get a double-bogey or triple-bogey, so we're working on that.”

Josh Aguilar shot an 83-84-167 and Coe Duke had an 81-86-167 for the low scores of the tournament for Pecos. They were followed by Richard Dutchover with an 84-85-169, while Nathan Duke and Heath Armstrong both shot 172s, Duke with an 81-91 score and Armstrong with 83-89 totals.

“The positive thing about it is they came out here and worked real hard with week, because they know they can play better and then have Andrews and San Angelo coming up,” Doan said. “They shot a 306-317 in Andrews (in November), and I told them, 'you wanted a chance to see if you could do it again. Here it is'. And in San Angelo, they're going to play some of the top 3A teams in the area again.

The girls shot a 375-377-752 at the Fort Stockton Invitational, which was won by Monahans with a 626 score. “They're still learning their mechanics, and had a hard time both days,” coach Tina Doan said. “We've just got to get our team consistency together and I'm just trying to get my juniors, my sophomores and my one senior to lower their scores.”

Tatum Windham shot an 86-85-171 for the Eagles' low round, and was followed by Katrina Hinojos with an 88-94-182; Samantha Sparkman with a pair of 99s for a 198 total; Heather Matta with a 102-99-201 and Rina Pino with a pair of 102 rounds, for a 204 score.

“I saw some bright spots in the girls. They showed some good ball management at times,” Doan said.

The host Prowlers finished well behind the Eagles in the standings, shooting a 447-442-889. Doan said because of work being done at the Reeves County Golf Course, the opening round of the District 4-3A Tournament next month has been moved from Pecos to Fort Stockton, while the final round will still be held in El Paso.

“We didn't know how the (Pecos) course would be. Hopefully, everything will be ready to play here next year,” she said. “This tournament gave most of the girls a chance to see the (Fort Stockton) course, and give them an idea of what they need to do and what to look for at district.”
