Pecos Summer Run Track Meet scheduled for Saturday
The Pecos Summer Run track meet will kick off Saturday morning at 9 a.m. according to Pecos Head Track Coach Tom Hughes. The summer meet is part of the summer track program that has been growing over the past few years. “We have 42 of the younger kids this year and about 20 high school kids - that’s up from last year,” Hughes said. Hughes said that he is expecting 300-plus kids to show up for the track meet on Saturday. “Odessa is fielding four teams and we have teams coming from Crane, Balmorhea, Alpine, Marfa and Van Horn,” he said. Last year about 150 kids showed up for the meet. With the rising turnout Hughes is finding himself strapped for help to run the meet. “We will need about 35 people to run the field events and then about 22 for the running events,” Hughes said. No previous experience is necessary. Kids wishing to participate in the track meet need to report to the high school field house to sign up. The entry fee is $5 and that covers a competitor for up to five events. “They will sign up for the event at the event itself,” Coach Carry Hannsz said. Hannsz said that the meet will have seven divisions for kids ages six and under up through high school. Field events begin at 9 a.m. and running events will begin at 12 noon. The summer program will continue through the month of June and into July and interested children can still sign up, Hannsz said.
Summer golfers get ready for tournaments
Children ranging from first grade to high school are sharpening their golf skills this summer under the coaching of Tina Doan, Pete Vasquez and Rica Pino. The summer golf program is sponsored by the Reeves County Recreation Department. The golf program began June 4th and will conclude with tournaments on June 25th and 26th. According to Doan, who is the High School Girl’s golf coach, first and second graders have been meeting from 8-8:45; fifth, sixth and seventh graders from 9-9:45; third and fourth graders from 10-10:45 and eighth through high school from 11-11:45. Classes are held at the Reeves County Golf Course. On Monday June 25th there will be a tournament for the first through fifth graders beginning at 8 a.m. On Tuesday June 26th there will be a tournament for the sixth graders through high school, also starting at 8 a.m.
