PHS golfers trail leaders at regionals

The Pecos Eagle girls golf team and boys’ junior golfer Michael Nichols were both in need of strong rounds today, in the final round of the Region I-3A Tournament, to have a shot at advancing to the Class 3A state tournament in Austin next month.

Monahans’ boys and girls golf teams both sit in first place following the opening round of the 36-hole tournament on Monday, while Pecos’ golfers need to make up strokes in order to get into the runner-up spot by the end of today’s 18 holes.

Monahans’ girls shot a 319 in the opening round of the girls’ tournament at Ratliff Ranch in Odessa. They’re two shots up on defending state champion Snyder, while the Eagles are eight strokes in back of the Tigers at 329, with two other squads, Bridgeport and Sweetwater, just in front of Pecos with scores of 327 and 328.

Nichols, who earned medalist honors at the District 4-3A Tournament last week, has 10 golfers in front of him in the I-3A medalist race, but he’s just three shots behind second place Braxton Brin of Monahans entering today’s second round at Nuevo Vista Golf Course in Midland.

The girls, who won regionals a year ago and placed second to Snyder at state, got a round of 76 from Shelly Martinez, which put her in seventh place in the medalist race, while Sarah McKinney shot an 81, Jennie Canon and Elenaor Mason both shot 86s, while Bianca Mendoza had a round of 89.

Lauren Espinoza of Lake Dallas set a new regional record with a 66 to take the first round lead in the medalist race, six strokes up on Lauren Cheves of Bridgeport. Monahans’ Allison Jordan, who beat out Martinez for medalist honors at the district golf tournament, is in 11th place in the medalist race with a 78, while Whtiney Mitchell had the best round for the Loboes, a 75, which tied her for fourth place.

Graham’s Andrew Bryant shot a 72 to lead the boys’ medalist race, while Monahans’ Braxton Brin is tied for second, with a 74 total, and the Loboes’ J.W. Burnett is tied for fourth with sixth other golfers, at 76. Nichols is one shot behind that group, while the boys’ other regional medalist qualifier, Pete Vasquez, shot an 85 on Monday.

Monahans shot a 307 and is four strokes ahead of Graham, while Canyon is at 314. Fort Stockton, which beat out Monahans for the District 4-3A golf title, shot a 329 on Monday and is in ninth place going into the final round of play.

Bears send relay, two individuals to regional

The Balmorhea Bears qualified one relay team and two individuals for the Region I-A Track and Field Championships in Wink at the end of this month, after they placed in the top four last week at the Class A Area Track and Field Championships at Wink.

Balmorhea’s Larissa Rodriguez took second place in the girls triple jump to earn a trip to regionals, at South Plains Junior College in Levelland, while Michael Hernandez and the Bears’ 800 meter relay team advanced to regionals with fourth place finishes on the boys’ side.

“Last year we only had two boys in high school track. This year we have 15,” said Bears’ coach Adolfo Garcia. He added that Rodriguez is one of two girls out for track this season.

She had a jump of 32-feet-10 1/2 inches to earn the silver medal in that event. Garcia said she also finished seventh in the long jump and high jump, while Balmorhea’s other girl, Trina Jurado, finished seventh in the shot put.

Hernandez qualified for regionals in the 3200-meter run with an 11:11.66 time, finishing behind a trio of Iraan runners. Balmorhea’s relay team also placed behind Iraan, along with Rotan and McCamey, while beating out Grandfalls for the fourth and final regional berth with a 1:40.63 time.

Hernandez and two other Bears just missed qualifying for regionals with fifth place finishes. Hernandez took fifth in the 1600 meter run with a 5:03.85 time, while A.J. Garcia placed fifth in the discus, with a 115-foot-11 throw, and Alexis Lozano finished fifth in the shot put, with a throw of 45-foot-4 1/2.

Overall, Balmorhea wound up with 21 points in the meet. Keith Baeza placed sixth in the 200 meter dash and the Bears’ 400 meter relay team also took sixth for Balmorhea’s other three points, while Adolfo Garcia said Michael Rodriguez also made the finals for Balmorhea, taking seventh in the 100 meter dash.
