Eagles get 3rd in junior high district tennis

Pecos junior high tennis players finished third overall this past Thursday, in the District 4-3A Junior High Tournament, with seventh graders Elva Martinez and Catherine Moore finishing second in the girls’ doubles division.

The two won their opening match by an 8-1 score, before falling in the finals to Massey ad Boggs of Monahans, 9-8 (7-3).

Pecos also picked up four third place finishes in the tournament. In seventh grade Kristen Ikeler defeated teammate Jasmine Rayos, 8-4, in the third place match for girls singles and Paul Zubledia took third in boys’ singles. Ikeler downed Reba Subia, 8-2 before losing to Hanna Beth Carter, 8-5, while Rayos defeated Chelsea Woodward, 8-3 and teammate Victoria Montoya, 9-7, before losing to Madison Murray, 8-4. Zubledia downed Cesar Morado, 8-1, then lost to Joe Daniel Granado, 9-7 before beating Steven Hamilton, 8-5.

In the eighth grade, Chantell Orona was third in girls singles, while Dane Daniels and Cody Zamarippa were third in boys doubles. Orona beat Monica Mondale, 8-0 and Megan Mowery, 8-6, before losing to Emily Acker, 8-1. She then beat Abby Dominguez for third, 9-7. Daniels and Zamarippa won 8-1 and 8-5 matches from McGrew and Ochoa and Baden and Gonzales around an 8-4 loss to Bean and Orona.

Eagles host Monahans, Greenwood

The Pecos Eagle boys will be trying to stay in a tie for first place at home tonight, while Pecos’ girls will be playing to get into a tie for second at home this afternoon, as the girls take on the Monahans Loboes at 5 p.m. while the boys host the Greenwood Rangers in a 7 p.m. start.

Pecos is 4-2 in the District 4-3A softball standings, while Monahans is 5-1, including a 3-0 win at home over the Eagles last month. Nicole Dickson got the win in that game, while Stephanie Herrera took the loss.

Herrera was absent from Friday’s 15-5 win at Presidio, while Dickson pitched a perfect game against Kermit, in a 10-0. Eagles’ coach Tammy Walls said Herrera would start again today for Pecos, though she wasn’t sure if Pecos would see Dickson again. “We’re looking for Raaquel (Hawkins),” Walls said. “She (Monahans coach Amy Wilson) usually switches them out. The first time around we see one, then we see the other.”

The boys remained tied for first in the district standings on Friday by getting their first district road victory, 2-1 over Fort Stockton. Meanwhile, Greenwood fell out of a tie for first with an eight-inning, 5-3 loss at Christensen Stadium to Presidio, which like the Eagles are 3-0 in district play.

Last year against Greenwood, Pecos jumped out to big leads twice, only to lose in Midland 13-11 and then hold on for a 12-9 win at home. The Eagles faced Justin Crockett and Adam Banda in that second game, and figure to see one start tonight on the mound. Coach Elias Payan said the Eagles would start Josh Anchondo, 3-2, tonight against Greenwood. “I hope he can go all the way, but if not we have a couple of people who can come in in relief. But I think he’ll do a good job tonight,” Payan said.

Anchondo defeated Kermit and Monahans at home to open 4-3A play, surviving a dozen Kermit hits for a 9-6 win, then four-hitting Monahans in a 7-2 victory.
