Eagles host Monahans, Crane teams
The Pecos Eagle basketball teams will play the first of five home
doubleheaders tonight at the Pecos High School gym, when the girls open
District 4-3A play by hosting Monahans and the boys play their final
pre-district home game, against the Crane Golden Cranes.
The girls will play at 6 p.m., followed by the boys' game at about
7:30 p.m. Pecos' JV girls and freshman boys will face Monahans and
Crane at 4:30 p.m., and the JV Eagles will take on the Cranes at 6 p.m.
in the old PHS gym.
Both Eagle teams will be trying to halt losing streaks at home
tonight. The boys have dropped four straight games since a win at
Lamesa on Dec. 29, while the girls have lost two straight, both against
Crane, since returning from their two-week Christmas break.
The girls fell to the Cranes in their home opener on Tuesday by a
53-39 score, in a game where Crane used a 10-0 run to take a 14-point
lead to close out the first half.
Crane's post Amada Baker led all scorers with 15 points, though the
Eagles tried to force the Cranes to shoot from the outside during the
game. For tonight, coach Veronica Valenzuela said the Eagles would
probably try to do the same thing against Monahans' post Laura
Crumrine.
"She's been their top scorer in the games I've watched them play,"
she said. "They also had a couple of guards that shot well, but I'd
rather have them earn their shots from the outside, so we're going to
try the same strategy again."
The Eagles are 3-11 on the season, while Monahans comes into play
with a 10-7 record.
Pecos' boys are 6-11 on the season following their 46-40 loss at Big
Spring on Tuesday, in a game where the Steers used a 20-6 advantage in
the third period to wipe out a 22-13 halftime lead by the Eagles.
Crane, meanwhile, was routed by Pecos' district6 rival Kermit on the
road Tuesday night, losing by an 87-42 final score. Hunter Seabourne
led the Cranes with 14 points.
"Crane's got some good athletes. They were a young team when we
played them last year, and they're still a pretty young team, but it
will be a tough game," said Eagles' coach Joe Flores.
The boys district season is still a week off. Pecos has one final
pre-district game, in Jal, N.M. on Tuesday, before returning home to
face 4-3A favorite Greenwood to start off the district schedule. Pecos'
girls also will host Greenwood that night, and go to Fort Stockton on
Tuesday.
