Spring sports teams in action today, Saturday

The spring sports seasons officially get underway in full force this weekend, with Pecos' high school golf and track teams on the road, the baseball team at home and on road, and the junior high track teams at home this afternoon and evening for the West of the Pecos Junior Relays.

The track meet will get underway at 4 p.m., with the boys field events and the girls running finals. The running finals for the boys and the field events for the girls will take place this evening.

Along with Pecos, the rest of the field will be made up of Monahans, Fort Stockton, Kermit, Presidio, Dell City, Grandfalls, Fort Davis and Marfa. All running events will be timed finals.

While the second half of the track meet goes off at Eagle Stadium, Pecos' baseball team will be across the parking lot playing their second game of the season, and first of three games this weekend, against the Big Spring Steers. Playing with four sophomores and two freshmen among their starters on Tuesday, the Eagles dropped their opener to Odessa High by a 9-1 final score. OHS got five of their runs in the second inning of Josh Anchondo, who otherwise pitched well, though the Eagles' new players had problems hitting throughout the game. Coach Elias Payan said sophomore Eddie Vela would probably start today against the Steers. "I'll probably hold back Jose (Reyes) and throw him and Josh against Snyder," Payan said. The Eagles will face the Tigers in a doubleheader at Moffett Field in Snyder at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

In golf, the Eagles boys started play this morning at the Tall City Invitational in Midland, while the girls played at the Blue Ribbon Invitational in Fort Stockton. It's the first tournament in three weeks for the girls, who were idle last weekend and snowed out the previous week at Big Spring, while the boys will be looking for more consistency, after placing seventh in Fort Stockton a week ago.

Pecos' varsity track team will also be in Fort Stockton on Saturday for their season-opening event, the Comanche Relays. Meanwhile, Pecos' powerlifting team will be in Kermit on Saturday for their final meet before regional competition, which also will be in Kermit the following Saturday.

Netters earn seconds, consolation at Stockton

The Pecos Eagles came up with a pair of second place finishes and several consolation title wins last weekend at the Fort Stockton Tournament, their final matches before next week's Region I-3A team tournament in Levelland.

Both of the second place finishes came on the girls' side, as the boys had to move up in their seedings a spot and shift their doubles teams around slightly, due to the absence of No. 1 seed Trent Graham.

Natalia Ornelas lost in the finals of girls' singles at No. 1 seed to Molly Cook, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) after beating Jenna Henderson, 6-1, 6-1, and Fort Stockton's Casee McKenzie, 7-6, 6-2. Also finishing second was No. 4 seed Sara Natividad. She beat Monica Barraza, 6-3, 6-2, and Kayla Gulihur, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Amy Stretcher, 6-0, 6-3.

At No. 2 seed, Mimi Ornelas placed fourth, beating Heather Price, 6-1, 6-1, then losing to Amanda Ridgeway, 6-0, 6-3, and Megan Fitzgibbons, 6-0, 6-2. No. 5 seed Chantel Orona also was fourth, winning an opening default match then losing to Lauren Moore, 6-2, 7-5, and Hillary Huffman, 6-2, 6-0.

At No. 3 seed, Whitney Lamb fell to Kelly Thompson, 6-1, 6-1, then defeated Marissa Contreras, 8-1, and Lanell Garcia, 8-0, to win consolation. No. 6 seed Crystal Ikeler lost both her matches on Friday, as did Amber Pando at No. 7 seed.

In boys singles, Francisco Hernandez lost his opening round match at No. 1 boys singles and ended up with consolation though he didn't play any other matches; Donald Walker also won consolation, losing his opening match to Ross Brown, 6-0, 6-2, and then beating Jake Garber, 8-0, and Michael Conely, 8-5.

At No. 3 singles, Francisco Ornelas lost his opener to Kris Grey, 6-1, 6-1, then beat Scott Brown, 8-0, and Brady Vaughn, 8-6, to win consolation. No. 4 seed Jerris Rayos finished fourth in his bracket, beating Rudy Barrera before falling to William Burke, 6-3, 6-3, and Robby Barriga, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 5 seed Woody Tremble lost both his matches of the day on Friday, as did Cedrick Pendleton at No. 6 seed and Curtis James at No. 7 seed.

In doubles on Saturday, Hernandez and Walker lost in the consolation finals at No. 1 seed, while Rayos and Ornelas took consolation playing at No. 2 seed and James and Pendleton lost both their matches at No. 3 seed.

On the girls' side, Ikeler and Amber Pando won fourth place while playing at No. 3 seed, Lamb and Natalia Ornelas lost in the consolation finals at No. 1 seed, while Natividad and Mimi Ornelas won the consolation finals at No. 2 seed.

Eagles fall on tie-breaker to No. 2-ranked Midland

There really isn't any category for "Most Positive Loss Ever" in softball, but Thursday's opening round loss by the Pecos Eagles at the West Texas Classic Softball Tournament in Midland would probably top the list in the team's six-plus years of varsity play.

The Eagles opened the 20-team tournament by facing the Midland High Bulldogs, the state's No. 2 ranked team in Class 5A, on their home field Thursday afternoon and ended up taking Midland into extra innings and then past that, before losing the game on a tie-breaker at the time limit by a 2-1 final score.

A new UIL rule limiting teams to only six games per tournament led the tournament format to be changed from a bracket format to a point system based on wins, runs and margin of victory. Even the extra inning rule was different, as both teams started the extra session with runners on second base, playing under international rules, and both scored three times before Midland won on the second tie-breaker.

Those runs didn't count in the points system, though the tie-breaking run did for the Bulldogs. That ended up giving Pecos one point for their loss while Midland High earned six points for their victory and two more for the two runs they scored in the game. Full details were not available this morning on the game, which left Pecos with a 3-5 record on the season.

Midland High was one of two state-ranked teams Pecos will face in the tournament. The other will be the No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A, Coahoma, in their final tournament contest, at 5 p.m. on Saturday. That group of Bulldogs faced Midland High after Pecos did and lost by a 15-1 final score, but opened the tournament with a 6-3 victory over the Eagles' District 4-3A rival, Greenwood.

Pecos began their second day of tournament play at 9 a.m. this morning against Snyder, which routed Dumas in their opening game by a 13-4 final score. They'll then take on El Paso Americas, 14-3 losers in their opener to Weatherford, in their final game of the day, at 1 p.m.c Pecos' other two games on Saturday will be against Fort Stockton, at 9 a.m., and against Coahoma, at 1 p.m. The Prowlers were beaten by Midland Lee in their opener, 18-0, while Merkel didn't open tournament play until 9 a.m. this morning, when they faced Monahans, which also didn't play on Thursday.
