Eagles-Loboes on ice until Saturday

The Pecos Eagles' District 4-3A basketball showdown against the Monahans Loboes will go off at least 24 hours later than scheduled, a change coach Joe Flores isn't all that unhappy about.

The Eagles, who need two wins in their final two regular season games and two losses by Monahans in their last two games to force a playoff for third place, were scheduled to host Monahans at 7:30 p.m. in the Pecos High School gym. But the hazardous driving conditions across the area since Thursday afternoon led Pecos and Monahans to reschedule the game for tomorrow, when conditions are expected to improve.

"We'll play on Saturday, the same times for all three games," Flores said. The varsity contest will start about 7:30 p.m., following the freshman and JV games, which are scheduled for 4:30 and 6 p.m. starts.

The Eagles are 2-6 in district following their 51-46 loss at second-place Kermit on Tuesday. Monahans is 4-4 and missed a chance to clinch third place in the district standings on Tuesday in Presidio, rallying to tie the game in regulation before falling to the Blue Devils in overtime, 74-70. The Loboes close out their regular season next week against Kermit, while the Eagles play their final regular season contest at Fort Stockton.

Last month in Monahans, the Eagles got 25 points from guard Jose Reyes, but overall leading scorer Oscar Parada was held to just two points while suffering from the flu, and the Loboes came away with a 53-48 victory. Casey Myers and Dimas Porras had 12 points to lead the Loboes, who began district by winning three of their first four games.

While Parada is healthy for the rematch with the Loboes, Flores said he was still happy for the one-day delay for medical reasons.

"I'm looking at it as a plus, because Victor Reyes had a bone bruise and has been hobbling around in practice. The extra day should give him more time to heal," he said.

Presidio, wit a 3-5 district mark, also remains in the playoff race. Their game tonight against Fort Stockton also has been postponed due to the weather. Along with two wins on their own and two losses by Monahans, the Eagles also need one loss by Presidio in their final two games, against the 0-8 Panthers and 8-0

Midland Greenwood, in order to have a shot at earning their first playoff berth in 14 years.

Eagles cancel outdoor events due to weather

Freezing rain and icy roads have led to the postponement or cancellation of all outdoor sports for the Pecos Eagles scheduled for today and Saturday.

Pecos' tennis and softball teams were scheduled to play today, while the Eagles' golf teams were to be in action today and Saturday at the Big Spring Invitational. But with the hazardous driving conditions across the western Permian Basin since yesterday morning, and with the bad weather expected to continue until Saturday afternoon, all of those events are off.

The Pecos Invitational tennis tournament has been rescheduled for next month, coach Mike Ortiz said. "We rescheduled it for March 26. I got ahold of the coaches yesterday and told them."

Five schools were scheduled to participate in today's tournament. For the new date, Ortiz said, "I've got three schools coming and I'll probably get a couple of different team to fill those holes."

The Eagles' boys and girls golf teams were scheduled to play in the Big Spring Invitational this morning, while the girls' softball team was supposed to play their final pre-season scrimmage this afternoon at Denver City. Both events were cancelled by the weather, and Denver City also cancelled all their school classes today because of the bad weather.
