Eagles, Loboes fighting for first tonight
One week into the 2003 District 4-3A volleyball season and things look
pretty much like they did a week into the 2002 volleyball season.
That's good new for the Pecos Eagles, but they do want things to
start changing beginning this evening, when they host the Monahans
Loboes beginning about 6:30 p.m. at the Pecos High School gym. Play
opens with the freshman and junior varsity matches, at 5:30 p.m.
A week into the season last year, the Eagles and Loboes were tied
for first in the District 4-3A standings. But Monahans would then sweep
Pecos on their home court, and go on to win the district title with a
10-0 record, on the way to the Region I-3A title.
This season, the teams again are tied for first, both with 2-0
records, though Monahans' early schedule has been a little tougher and
their overall record again is a lot better than Pecos this season. The
Loboes beat Greenwood and Fort Stockton in their first two district
matches and are 26-5 overall, while the Eagles defeated Kermit and
Presidio to open 4-3A play, improving their record to 10-13 on the
year.
Coach Becky Granado said while the Eagles will be underdogs tonight,
she's hoping their recent improved play will continue tonight and can
produce an upset.
"They saw Seminole beat Monahans (at the Seminole Invitational), and
I told them anything can happen, but you've got to go out there and
play," Granado said. "I just hope we can go out relaxed and play well.
We've got to be able to stop (Laura) Crumrine and (Brittany) Hughes."
The Loboes' two main hittters, along with blocker Rachel Miller,
give Monahans a big front line advantage against Pecos, which means the
Eagles will have to play well on defense and in passing the ball to
their setters in order to have a chance.
The Eagles had an easier time on Saturday in their 25-15, 25-15,
25-18 win at Presidio than they did a week earlier in a five-game match
at home against the Blue Devils. Pecos also played well following a
slow start in their district opener against Kermit a week ago.
The winner of tonight's match will be alone in first place, while
the loser will be tied for second with the winner of tonight's
Greenwood-Fort Stockton match. Pecos goes to Fort Stockton on Saturday
and hosts Greenwood a week from tonight.
Pecos short runners for meet in Lubbock
The Pecos Eagles' cross country team was short a few boys and a lot
of girls this past Saturday, when they competed at the Lubbock
Invitational, the site of the Region I-3A cross country meet in
November.
"I was missing two boys runners. Hopefully we'll be able to take a
full squad to Ozona, said coach Rudy Jurado, who ended up with four
runners on the boys' side at Mae Simmons Park. That was still four more
runners than what Pecos had on the girls' side.
"I had one in volleyball, two injured and one was a no-show on
Saturday," he said. The Eagles only had one runner compete at the
District 4-3A girls meet a year ago, and Jurado is hoping Pecos can
field enough runners for a full team when district competition is held
three weeks from now.
For the runners who did compete in Lubbock, Isaiah Juarez had the
best time over the three-mile course, a 19:09 that put him in 30th
place out of 75 runners. Canyon's Brett Shepherd won with a 15:51 time.
Joshua Cobos was next for Pecos, finishing 43rd with a 20:06 time.
Gonzalo Reyna was 54th with a time of 20:44, and Pete Juarez placed
70th with a time of 23:01.
"Everyone cut down on their time. I had one that went two minutes
fast and the others cut about a minute off their times, so even though
we didn't get anyone into one of the top 25 places, I was pleased
because everyone cut their times," Jurado said.
The Ozona meet is scheduled for this coming Saturday.
