Eagles host Yellowjackets in 4-3A opener

District 4-3A competition begins tonight for the Pecos Eagles volleyball team, when they host the Kermit Yellowjackets beginning about 6:30 p.m. at the Pecos High School gym.

The Eagles will be seeking their eighth straight trip to the playoffs, having placed third in district last season behind eventual state semifinalist Monahans and Midland Greenwood. The Loboettes, who won all 20 games in their 10 district matches last season, again are heavy favorites to take the 4-3A title, but the rest of the district race could be tighter than it was a year ago.

Both Kermit and Presidio, who the Eagles defeated at home this past Saturday, appear stronger than a year ago, when they finished at the bottom of the 4-3A standings. Meanwhile, Greenwood, which went 8-2 in district a year ago, has struggled a little in the early going, though they did come up with a victory over Alpine, last year's Region I-2A champ, a week ago, and Fort Stockton, who the Eagles beat out for the final playoff berth last season, returns most of their hitters from the 2002 season.

Pecos is 8-13 after their 22-25, 25-14, 24-26, 25-22, 15-13 victory over the Blue Devils on Saturday. They were also supposed to face Kermit on Saturday, but that match was cancelled. The teams played a pool round match last month at the Cantaloupe Classic Tournament in Pecos, splitting a pair of 15-13 games.

"Kermit's got two big girls, but as far as defense, they don't send anybody up to block," Eagles' coach Becky Granado said. "If they do they send someone it would be to the strong side or the weak side."

With Pecos' lack of size up front, spiking the ball down close to the net doesn't happen often, while the extra players back leaves the Eagles' hitters with fewer openings to work with.

"It will be challenging for the girls to find positions to it to. Just so long as they don't get frustrated, we should be all right," Granado said.

Play will begin at 5:30 p.m. today with the Eagles' junior varsity and freshman teams taking on Kermit at the new and old Pecos High School gyms. The varsity match will follow the J.

Pecos' Martinez 9th in Big Spring cross country

Pecos Eagles' cross country runner Jennifer Martinez placed ninth this past Saturday in the girls division of the Big Spring Invitational meet at Birdwell Park.

Martinez had a 14:18 time to finish in the Top 10 in the division, which was won by San Angelo Lake View's Anita Rodriguez, with a 13:11 time, coach Rudy Jurado said. It was her second ninth place finish so far this season, after ending up in the same spot two weeks ago at the San Angelo Invitational.

"Jennifer Martinez still looks strong. She knocked 13 seconds off her other time," Jurado said.

Pecos had one other runner on the girls' side, Jasmine Rodriguez, who placed 38th with a 21:25 time over the two-mile course. For the boys, Joshua Cobos had the best effort, finishing 27th with a 21:06 time for three miles, while Gonzalo Reyna was 30th, with a 21:22 time, and Peter Juarez placed 44th, with a 24:40 time.

Jurado said the Eagles didn't have enough runners entered at Big Spring to earn a team score. "About three or four of my boys; runners didn't get to go because they missed practice, and three of my girls missed practice, so they didn't get to go to the meet, and two others were no-shows on Saturday.

"Hopefully, we'll have the whole team when we go to Lubbock on Saturday," he added.

Most of the field at Big Spring was made up of Class 5A and 4A teams. "The only district opponent we saw out there was Greenwood," Jurado said. "We'll still have to see who else will have a team."

Jurado said Joe Pando of Greenwood finished just in front of Cobos, in 25th place with a 20:52 time, while the best effort on the girls' side for Greenwood was a 34th place by Krista Cole, with a 17:30 time.

This Saturday's meet at Mae Simons Park will be at the same site as the Region I-3A cross-country meet in early November. Jurado said the girls would run at 10 a.m., followed by the boys at 10:30 a.m.
