Eagles go 1-4-1 in sub-varsity football games
The Pecos Eagles sub-varsity football teams ended up with a split and
a couple of losses in junior high games at Monahans on Thursday, while getting
a tie and a loss playing at home against the Brownfield Cubs.
The Eagles' junior varsity team lost to Brownfield, 12-0, after the ninth
graders finished in a 12-12 tie with the Cubs. Over in Monahans, the Eagles
ended up playing both purple and gold games against the Loboes, losing in
the eighth grade purple and gold games, 30-0 and 14-0, while losing the
seventh grade gold game, 28-6, and winning the purple game, 6-0.
Luis Ortega returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and scored on
a 9-yard run for Pecos' freshman, who took a 12-6 lead at halftime and held
it until 31/2 minutes left in the game, when Brownfield scored on a 18-yard
pass on fourth down to tie the score. The tie puts the ninth graders at
1-0-1 on the season.
The JV allowed Brownfield a 62-yard touchdown pass and a 52-yard TD run
in the second period for the game's only points. Pecos had trouble moving
the ball on the ground and failed to take advantage of a long punt return
in the final period, while falling to 2-2 on the season.
Both eighth grade teams are 1-1 after their shutout losses, and coach
Keith Windham said the purple team also lost quarterback Juan Garza, who
broke his arm on a running play in Thursday's loss. The gold team's loss
came just a week after they won in Monahans by a 12-0 score.
The seventh grade gold team is 1-1 and the purple team 2-0 after Thursday's
split. The purple team won on a halfback option pass for a touchdown from
Jeremy Martinez to Hector Ramirez, while Kevin Herrera had the lone score
for the purple team, which had won the previous week at Monahans, 20-6.
Tonight at 7:30 p.m., Pecos' varsity goes to Brownfield for the second
of their three trips in four weeks to the South Plains. They won at Lamesa
last week to go 2-1 on the season, and go to Lubbock High in two weeks,
while Brownfield fell to 0-3 with a narrow 13-12 loss to Pecos' opponent
next Friday, Crane.
A win tonight would assure Pecos of no worse than a .500 record going
into their District 4-3A opener next month, and would allow the Eagles to
surpass their win total for all of 2002. Brownfield comes into the game
winless for the second year in a row, but began a string of six wins in
seven games with their victory in Pecos a year ago.
Pecos is one of three District 4-3A teams on the road tonight. Greenwood
goes to Snyder and Fort Stockton travels to San Angelo Lake View, while
Monahans plays host to Lubbock Cooper and Kermit is at home against Reagan
County.
Greenwood (3-0) at Snyder (0-2): The second of four straight road games
for the Rangers, who go to Andrews and Monahans in their next two contests.
Greenwood's offense has been just as strong as a year ago, averaging over
400 yards and 33 points a game, but haven't been as strong so far this season
on defense, where they're surrendering over 300 yards and 22 points a game.
But all three teams the Rangers played were 2002 playoff qualifiers,
as are the two teams Snyder lost to this season, Frenship and Abilene Wylie,
the last by a 24-7 score. All the scoring in that game came in the first
half, and Snyder quarterback Boicy Martinez ran and threw for 185 yards
in the loss. Sweetwater's defense shut down Greenwood's running game, but
the Rangers still pulled out the victory thanks to a 300-yard passing night
by Dawson Wilbur.
Fort Stockton (2-1) at San Angelo Lake View (0-3): Outside of the third
quarter against Colorado City in their opener, the Panthers haven't really
had a bad quarter this season. Last week they scored all of their points
in the second period at Ozona, on the way to a 22-14 victory. Quarterback
Wayne Jefferson has both run and passed for just under 170 yards in three
games.
While this is a home game for Lake View it's actually a change for them
as well - for the first time in 25 years, the Chiefs are playing their home
games at Bobcat Stadium, after the San Angelo ISD had an AstroPlay surface
installed at Bobcat, and wanted both teams to use it to justify the cost.
Lake View running back Robert Payne will hope to fare as well on it as he
did last week in Kerrville, where he ran for 156 yards in a 34-14 loss to
Tivy.
Lubbock Cooper (2-0) at Monahans (1-2): The Loboes got their first win
of the season for the second year in a row against Alpine, rallying in the
second half last week at Jackson Field for a 29-21 win. Kevin Kenyon threw
for 146 yards and two scores.
Cooper, meanwhile, followed up their 30-0 home win over Lamesa with a
63-0 victory against Tahoka last week. Howell Finch, who plagued Pecos in
baseball this past spring, scored two touchdowns in that win, and the Pirates
racked up 663 yards in offense. The Loboes won at Lubbock a year ago.
Reagan County (2-1) at Kermit (2-1): The Jackets suffered a narrow loss
at Ozona in their opener, and have routed Brownfield and Seminole the past
two weeks. Randy Butterfield returned kickoffs for touchdowns in both games,
and Kermit held Seminole to just 182 yards last week, after the Indians
put up 41 points on Monahans the previous Friday.
The Owls lost their opener, but have won a pair of narrow victories in
the past two weeks, 21-20 at Stanton in overtime and 28-20 over McCamey
last Friday, in a game where the Owls held a 24-6 lead midway through the
final period. Rudy Vargas ran for 176 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Eagles take on Presidio, Jr. highs host tournament
The Pecos Eagles varsity volleyball team will move over to the old Pecos
High School gym on Saturday for their final pre-district game, while Pecos'
seventh and eighth grade teams host five other teams in their own junior
high tournament at the new gym, starting 8 a.m. on Saturday.
The varsity Eagles will face District 4-3A rival Presidio in their final
pre-district game, with play beginning at 11 a.m. with the freshman game
at the old PHS gym.
Pecos split games on Tuesday with Fort Davis and Crane, sweeping the
Indians and losing in four games to the Cranes to fall to 7-13 on the season.
"Overall, I think the problem right now is our mental game right now,"
said Eagles' coach Becky Granado. "We'll have a hitter on a streak and our
setters won't continue going to her, and we still don't have anyone who
wants to take charge."
The Eagles have yet to face Presidio this year, but finished behind the
Blue Devils in their own Cantaloupe Classic Tournament three weeks ago.
The teams will meet again a week from Saturday in district play at Presidio,
following Pecos' home opener against Kermit on Tuesday.
The seventh and eighth grade tournaments will be played on opposite courts
at the new gym. The opening games on Friday will match Pecos' seventh grade
white team against Van Horn and the eighth grade gold team against Midland
Trinity. Pecos' seventh grade purple team faces Trinity and the eighth grade
purple team meets Van Horn at 9 a.m., while at 10 a.m. the eighth grade
black team faces Midland Christian and at 11 a.m. the seventh grade gold
team takes on the Mustangs. Presidio faces Fort Stockton in the other opening
round match in both divisions.
Consolation matches are scheduled for 12 noon and 1 p.m., while the semifinals
will be at 2 and 3 p.m., followed by the consolation finals, third place
and title matches, at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.
