Modern Study Clubs starts new year with meeting

The Modern Study Club opened their new club year on Sept. 10, as they met in the parlor of the First Christian Church, 432 S. Elm, Pecos.

The thought quote for the meeting was: "This little light of mine, I'm gonna' let it shine." The title of the program was "Ways to go in 2003-2004.".

President Joyce Morton, presiding officer, called the meeting to order.

Opening ceremonies, which included the saying of the Club Collect led by Nan Cate and pledges to the United States of America and Texas flags led by Juracy Ray, were conducted. Paula Fuller, secretary, read the minutes of the previous

meeting and Pearl Gustafson, treasurer, gave a statement concerning club finances.

After the president's welcome to members and special guest, Mrs. Betty Lee, she presented the new club yearbooks especially sighting the field trip to the Flat Top Dairy-Go-Round followed by lunch at K-Bobs in Fort Stockton and a visit to the Historic Mentone Courthouse.

Also, Western District President Joyce Goldwire will speak at a Federation Day Program entitled A Walk Through the Garden of Federation at Al and Nan Cate's home in Verhalen; A Baby Shower for Odessa/Midland Safe Place, a home for battered women and their children; an International Affairs' Program on The Balkans, a land of strife and trouble dominated by others to be presented by Nan Cate; Our U.S. Heritage by Paula Fuller- -Introduction to Genealogy by Nan Cate; International Festivals - members will present the country they chose to study this year through costumes, foods and any outstanding facts they wish to present; an arts and education program An Afternoon of Lovely Music provided by Martha Jay, with bios of the composers of the pieces she plays; a Conservation Program presented by the Pecos Tree Board- and Financial Planning by Edward Jones Firm.

Catherine Travland told of a special GFWC program called Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO), a program where clubwomen are given direction in planned reading for self-enrichment and personal growth and urged members to sign the pledge agreement to become a member.

President Morton and Martha Jay told members about their plans to organize a community choir and suggested that it be opened to anyone who would like to be a member.

Roll call was answered by giving the name of a prospective member. The bimonthly project emphasis: All members participate in club programs.

Delicious refreshments were served by hostesses Iris Reddick and Joyce Morton.

The next meeting will be on Preparedness in times of Community Emergencies with presenters Mayor of Pecos City Dot Stafford and Emergency-Management Coordinator Ricky Herrera. The meeting place will be in the home of J.E. and Catherine Travland at 318 W. 6th St.
