Hitting woes hurt Pecos against Cranes after win

Pecos Eagles coach Becky Granado said her defense was better Tuesday night, in the Eagles' volleyball matches against the Fort Davis Indians and Crane Golden Cranes. But this time, the offense fell apart for Pecos, as after sweeping Fort Davis and winning their first game with Crane, they dropped their final three matches to end up with a split of their dual meet at the Williams Center in Fort Stockton.

Pecos beat Fort Davis, 25-18, 25-16, 25-15, and then won their opener with Crane, 25-21. But from there, the Eagles' point totals kept getting lower, as they were beaten in the last three games by 25-22, 25-16 and 25-10 scores.

"We started pretty strong against Crane. We played two good games and then in the third one we just started falling apart," Granado said. "We just couldn't get anything going on offense. We had a hard time hitting the ball, and it wasn't because the sets weren't there."

"Defensively we did a good job. We hustled after the balls, but offensively we just couldn't get untracked," she said. "We're going to have to go back to our hitting mechanics, because our hitters are starting to drop their elbows and are getting under the ball."

Granado said the Golden Cranes "had one big girl, but they didn't really kill the ball on us. They just maintained their composure better and didn't make as many mental mistakes.

"We'd get some rallies going and score a couple of points in a row, then we'd make one mental mistakes and it would take a while to get back on track," she added.

"Against Fort Davis, they're not as strong as they were last year. They have a couple of tall girls, but they're weaker," Granado said. "They had a tough time with our serves, and like us, they made a lot of mental mistakes."

The split leaves the Eagles with a 7-12 season record going into their final pre-district match on Saturday, against District 4-3A rival Presidio. Pecos was also to have faced Kermit on Saturday, but that match has been cancelled. The Eagles will face the Jackets at home to open the District 4-3A schedule next Tuesday evening.

Granado said the starting times for the Tuesday and Saturday matches in district have been changed. The freshman and junior varsity matches will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and the varsity matches sometime between 6:30 and 7 p.m., while the Saturday matches have been pushed back three hours, and are now scheduled to begin at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.

"The district coaches voted to do that so we could get better referees at the matches," Granado said. "I'll be interested to see how our girls react to the later starting times."

Saturday's matches with Presidio are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., and will be played in the old Pecos High School gym. The new gym will be hosting the Crockett Junior High volleyball tournament for seventh and eighth grade teams this Saturday.
