Eagles resume volleyball play

The Pecos Eagles will end a one-week break and will try and snap their recent losing streak tonight, as they begin the final week of pre-district play with a pair of matches in Fort Stockton.

The Eagles originally were scheduled to face the Crane Golden Cranes and Fort Stockton Prowlers, but coach Becky Granado said that the Eagles will now face Crane and Fort Davis this evening at the Williams Center in Fort Stockton. The first match, against the Maidens, is scheduled for 5 p.m., with the Pecos-Crane match-up to follow that.

Pecos opened the 2003 season by splitting games with Alpine and Van Horn at Fort Stockton. Last Tuesday, they lost to Van Horn and El Paso Americas in Van Horn, which left Pecos with a 6-12 record for the season.

District 4-3A play opens a week from tonight for the Eagles at home against Kermit, which leaves Pecos with only tonight's matches and their final pre-district match on Saturday, against 4-3A rival Presidio, to straighten things out.

"We were kind of dragging yesterday," said Eagles' coach Becky Granado. "We were working on free balls, and I made them run lines for every ball they gave away. After they ran the lines they started focusing on saving the ball more, but that's still our problem, maintaining focus for the whole game."

Pecos has yet to face Crane in play this season, while the Eagles scrimmaged Fort Davis at home prior to the start of regular season play.

Granado said Pecos' junior varsity team will also face Fort Davis and Crane in matches tonight, while the freshmen Eagles will take on Crane and Fort Stockton in their two matches.

Pecos was scheduled to take on Kermit and Presidio on Saturday at the Pecos High School gym, but Granado said that the match with the Jackets has been cancelled. Kermit will be in town next Tuesday for the district opener for both teams.
