Freshmen, Jr. high gold teams face Tors, Loboes
Three Pecos Eagle sub-varsity football teams will kick off their 2003
seasons today, though some of the players on both squads already have played
their first games of the season.
The Eagles' freshman football team, and the seventh and eighth grade
gold teams will play their first games of 2003 this afternoon, the ninth
graders at home against Lamesa and the junior high squads in Monahans against
the Loboes. Pecos' junior varsity team will also be at home to Lamesa this
evening, starting around 7 p.m. The freshman game is set for a 5:30 p.m.
start, while the junior high teams will start at 4 and 5:30 p.m. in Monahans.
The freshmen were scheduled to start their season a week ago in Alpine,
but the Bucks only had enough players for one sub-varsity team. Some of
the ninth graders did get into the JV game in the second half, as Pecos
built a 33-6 lead on the way to a 33-12 victory.
The freshmen's only work other than that this season was in an Aug. 16
scrimmage against El Paso Riverside, while tonight's game against the Tornadoes
will be the third this season for the JV, which lost its opener two weeks
ago at Midland Christian before winning last week in Alpine.
The seventh and eighth grade gold teams were idle last week, while the
purple teams began their seasons with victories over the Bucks' junior high
squads. The seventh graders went up 28-0 at halftime on the way to a 34-6
victory, while the eighth graders rallied from an early deficit to beat
the Bucks, 20-6.
The eighth grade purple teams have this week off, but will play in Monahans
next Thursday while the gold teams are idle.
Eagles, Tors hunt missing running games Friday
By JON FULBRIGHT

If you can't block you can't do much running the ball.
If you can block, you can do pretty much anything.
Friday night, the Pecos Eagles and Lamesa Golden Tornadoes will try to
do something they couldn't do a week ago - move the ball on the ground -
when Pecos plays their road opener in Lamesa, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Neither the Eagles nor the Golden Tornadoes did much blocking for their
runners last week, and the result was not a whole lot of offense for either
team. But the Tornadoes did a lot of blocking against the Eagles last year
in Pecos, and their running backs did pretty much whatever they wanted in
a 42-26 victory over the Eagles.
Brandon McClure averaged over 10 yards per carry and gained 199 yards,
while Joseph Hill gained 143 yards and averaged better than 15 yards a carry,
as the Tors jumped out to a 26-0 lead and then held off a second half Pecos
comeback.
The loss was the beginning of an eight game losing streak for Pecos,
while for Lamesa, it was the high point of an overall down season that saw
the Tors finish with a 3-7 record after winning the District 3-3A title
the previous two seasons.
Lamesa has both McClure and Hill back this season, but both runners gained
less than 400 yards the rest of the season after their big game last year
in Pecos, while in their 2003 opener a week ago against Lubbock Cooper,
Hill was sidelined with a bad foot and McClure could to little against the
Pirates' defense. Cooper held the Tors to 89 yards rushing in a 30-0 victory.
"McClure got a little bit banged up Friday night. If he doesn't start,
Hill will start," said first year Lamesa head coach Carlton Branson "Jeremiah
Guerra (wingback) is our other returning starter."
Quarterback Alfred Morales ended up as the Tors' top rusher last week
with 46 yards. He's the only new face in the offensive backfield for Lamesa,
and Eagles' coach Patrick Willis said, "Their quarterback is a good runner,
and 14 (McClure) is a decent runner. "They've just got good size up front,"
Willis added. Though Branson said the Tors are short on experience up front
this season.
"We're a little young on the offensive line," he said. "We have about
10 kids playing for us that we're rotating, and we don't have any returning
starters."
"We changed our blocking schemes a little bit this year, but I think
more than anything else it's the speed of the game," Branson said of his
newcomers, about half of whom played junior varsity football last season.
"We're still running the same veer and option like we did last year, but
it's just a matter of speed."
Morales alternated at quarterback with Bryan Brown last week, and Branson
said they would probably do the same this Friday against Pecos.
"They run the exact same offense Alpine does," Willis said. "If we just
handle our option responsibilities we should be fine, especially having two
weeks to work on the option offense."
Meanwhile, after rushing for over 170 yards in their season opener against
Midland Christian, Pecos was held to minus-13 yards on the ground a week
ago by Alpine, and dropped a 13-8 decision to the Bucks at Eagle Stadium.
"We just didn't execute last week, so that's what we've been working
on," Willis said. "Executing, limiting our mistakes and our turnovers."
Defensively, the Tors have a trio of starters back on the front line,
and while Branson said they did allow Cooper 350 yards a week ago, he added
they did do well on goal line defense in the first half.
"Cooper got down to the 5-yard-line five times in the first half and only
scored once," he said. "I was proud out kids bowed up and did a good job
there, but we can't keep them on the field all night. Our offense has to
do more."
"They're big defensively, and that worries me," said Willis. Nose guard
John Wells, tackle J.J. Koehler and end Alex Chavez all are back from a
year ago, Branson said, though the Tors are young in the linebacking corps.
"We've got two of our three secondary players returning, Guerra at free
safety and Chris Sambrano at one of the cornerbacks," Branson said.
The Eagles' defense has only allowed 318 yards in their first two games,
though Willis said Pecos is still have problems on some plays adjusting
to the changes put in during the preseason.
"We've had some poor tackling, but we've also not lined up correctly,"
he said. "It's new for the defense, and when the bump the tight end to the
other side, we're not aware of it and are not moving over the way we should,
and we're not taking care of our gap responsibilities at times."
Willis said linebacker Bino Barreno might not start on Friday due to
injury, and Willis said sophomore Eddie Vela may start in his place.
