Eagles beaten by Van Horn, EP Americas

Missed chances at the finish did in the Pecos Eagles in their match against the Van Horn Eagles, while Pecos was unable to contain El Paso Americas hitter Justine Farmer and ended up losing a pair of games on Tuesday night in Van Horn.

The Eagles rallied after losing their first two games to Van Horn, 29-27 and 25-20, to even the match with 25-22 and 25-19 victories. But with the score tied at 11-all in the deciding game, Pecos made a series of errors that allowed Van Horn to win by a 15-11 final score.

"We dug ourselves a hole in the first two games, then fought back in the third and fourth games only to give it away," said Eagles' coach Becky Granado. "I told the girls we do some good things, but then we turn around and do some bad things."

"The defense would pick up a lot of balls I thought would hit the floor, but we also got caught standing around watching the game at times," she added.

Granado said the Eagles missed chances to score late in the deciding match on a couple of hitting errors by Stephanie Herrera, then gave up another point on a bad set by Jessica Flores.

"In the first game we had two missed serves. That's two easy points we gave away," she added. Pecos held a 24-21 lead in the first game, and also had chances to win with 25-24 and 27-26 leads before Van Horn pulled out the victory.

Against Americas, the Eagles were swept by 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 scores. "I think we were intimidated a little by their big girl (Farmer). She was pounding the ball," Granado said. "They were having trouble receiving serves, and we capitalized on their weak back line players some, but we just couldn't do it enough.

Even though Farmer was able to go over Pecos a number of times for kills, Granado said "Against Americas we did a much better job blocking that we did against Van Horn. It was a challenge to block their big girl, and we got our hands on some of her hits."

Americas also swept Van Horn in their Tuesday match, 25-16, 25-13, 25-9. Pecos' junior varsity split their Tuesday matches, beating Van Horn, 25-18, 23-25, 25-4, then losing to Americas, 25-17, 25-23. Pecos' freshman girls only faced Americas, and lost to the Trailblazers, 25-17, 25-21.

Pecos' record falls to 6-12 with the losses on Tuesday. The Eagles will have this weekend off, before playing their final two pre-district dual meets next week, in Fort Stockton against the Prowlers and Crane Golden Cranes on Tuesday and at home versus Kermit and Presidio on Sept. 20.
