Pee Wee players open conditioning drill week
By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer
Third through sixth graders were learning the ropes - along with the pads,
sleds and tackling dummies - at Martinez Field on Monday, as part of a four-day
conditioning session for the Pecos Eagle Pee Wee Football League.
League official Randy Baeza said 135 players participated in Monday's
90-minute workout, and three more workout sessions are planned today through
Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m.
"That's about three less than last year, but it's still a pretty good
turnout," said league official Michael Benavides. "I didn't know if we'd
have that many come out."
Baeza said in the past workouts had gone on over a period of several
weeks before the season started, in a more information set-up for each of
the teams. "This year we decided we would do it all together," for the three
teams made up of third and fourth graders and the four teams of fifth and
sixth graders.
"There are seven stations, and each station is named after a team participating
here," Baeza said, Equipment, such as a tackling sled, tackling pads, pylons
and a rope line, were set up at the stations, while one station focused
on pass receiving drills.
"They spend 10 minutes on every station," Baeza added.
Benavides, said that Pecos Eagles' head football coach Patrick Willis
was scheduled to be at the field on Wednesday to work with the players.
Regular season play for the Pee Wee football teams is scheduled to begin
on Saturday, Sept. 27.
EP Americas, Van Horn face Pecos tonight
The Pecos Eagles volleyball team will get in their third game of the season
against the Van Horn Eagles this evening, and their first game against an
El Paso school this year as well, when they travel to Van Horn to face that
group of Eagles and the El Paso Americas Trailblazers.
Coach Becky Granado said the Eagles were scheduled to face Americas first,
starting about 5 p.m., then will take on Van Horn in a 7 p.m. match. It's
the first of three dual meets Pecos has over the next eight days to close
out their pre-district schedule.
The Eagles went 1-4 over the weekend at the Seminole Tournament, beating
Amarillo River Road while falling to Midland High and Midland Lee on Friday,
then losing to Andrews and Pampa on Saturday. It left Pecos with a 6-10
record for the season
"We're going to have to concentrate on our serving. We lost two games
on serves, and twice when we did it, it was seniors who missed their serves,
so they are going to have to improve," Granado said. Bad serving hurt Pecos
the most against Andrews, when the Eagles led 23-20, but gave up serve and
a point and then saw the Mustangs rally to win the deciding game, 25-23.
Serving helped Pecos in their matches so far against Van Horn. The Eagles
opened their 2003 season with a 25-21, 25-19, 15-25, 25-21 victory, then
had to rally to win a rematch with that group of Eagles four days later
at the Monahans Sandhills Tournament, 20-25, 25-18, 28-26.
Pecos hasn't faced Americas this season, but the Trailblazers come into
this evening's match off winning the Socorro ISD Tournament over the weekend.
Americas downed El Paso Chapin in the tournament finals, 25-22, 21-25, 23-25,
25-17, 15-11.
After tonight, the Eagles will have two more dual meets before District
4-3A play starts, but only one match against a non-district opponent. They'll
go to Fort Stockton on Saturday to face the Prowlers and Crane Golden Cranes,
then host Kermit and Presidio in non-district matches a week from today.
