Sub-varsity Eagles sweep Alpine squads
Pecos' junior high football teams opened up their 2003 seasons Thursday
afternoon with a pair of home victories over the Alpine Bucks, while Pecos'
freshman team partially opened their season and the junior varsity evened
their record at 1-1 win a victory over the Bucks in Alpine.
The seventh grade purple team had five touchdowns called back by penalties,
but still managed to push across four others in a 32-6 win over Alpine,
while the eighth grade purple squad lost one score to a penalty, but used
two fourth quarter touchdowns to defeat the Bucks, 20-6.
Down in Alpine, the Bucks only had enough players for one sub-varsity
team, and the Eagles' JV built up a 33-6 halftime lead before a combined
JV and freshman team finished off a 33-12 victory.
Jeremy Martinez had three touchdown runs in the seventh graders' victory,
and the Eagles added a safety while taking a 28-0 halftime lead. Martin
Jasso added a two-point conversion run and later had an 18-yard TD run,
while Paul Zubledia passed to Phillip Williams for Pecos' final two points.
Alpine scored its' lone TD on a 40 yard run with under a minute to play
in the game.
The Bucks scored on a 35-yard pass early in the second period of the
eighth grade game, but the Eagles tied the score when Jeremy Dunlap returned
the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. Dunlap would lose a later
score due to a penalty, but returned a pass interception 57 yards for a
touchdown in the final period, after an eight-yard run by Juan Garza put
Pecos ahead 12-6. Drake Bradley had a two-point conversion run after the
Eagles' final score.
In Alpine, Miguel Estrada returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown
in the first half, after earlier passing 80 yards to Kole McNary for a score.
Luis Ortega had a four-yard TD run and Luis Nunez scored on runs of one
and five yards for the JV, all coming in the first half.
"We played the JV in the first half and then in the second half we put
in the backup JV players on the first series. After that it was the freshman,"
said Eagles' coach Junior Williams.
Alpine scored once in each half, the first on a 92-yard run, Williams
said.
The JV and ninth grade teams both are scheduled to get in their first
home games of the season next Thursday against Lamesa, while the junior
high gold teams will play their first games of the season next week in Monahans.
Tonight at 7:30 p.m., the Eagles' varsity will host Alpine, in the second
game of the season for both teams. Pecos is 1-0 after their 15-8 win last
week over Midland Christian, while Alpine is 1-0 following their 34-14 win
at home over Sonora. It's the first game in three years for the teams in
Pecos; the Bucks shut out the Eagles that night, 7-0, while Pecos got their
lone on-field win of the season last year in Alpine, 35-10.
Pecos faces tough field in Seminole
The Pecos Eagles' volleyball team should get their toughest tests overall
of the 2003 season today and Saturday, when they compete with 14 other teams
at the Seminole Invitational.
The Eagles opened play this morning with an 8 a.m. match against Midland
High. No score was available for that game, but the winner would play again
at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals against Big Spring or Midland Lee, while
the losers of those matches would be back on the court at 12 noon for a
consolation quarterfinal contest.
The Eagles already have faced Midland High once this season, falling
to the Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the Monahans Sandhills Tournament,
25-6, 25-14. They haven't faced either Big Spring or Midland Lee this season,
but the Steers defeated Pecos' district rival, Greenwood, this past Tuesday.
The Eagles dropped matches to Alpine and Midland Christian this past
Tuesday in Alpine, leaving them with a 5-6 record on the season, though
coach Becky Granado said Pecos played better in those games than they did
last weekend in their own Cantaloupe Classic Tournament.
"We just need to believe in each other, and believe we can win," she said.
"If we can just have confidence in each other, I think we'll be OK."
Lamesa faces Amarillo River Road and Odessa Permian takes on Hereford
in the other matches on Pecos' side of the bracket in Seminole. The remaining
first round matches pair the host Maidens against Pampa, San Angelo Lake
View against Lubbock Estacado and Monahans against Andrews. The winner of
that match will take on Lubbock Coronado, which drew a first round bye.
Hereford won last year's Seminole Invitational, while Monahans defeated
Midland High to win their own tournament two weeks ago.
Pecos' junior varsity volleyball team also is in action this weekend,
in tournament play at Midland, while the freshman Eagles have the weekend
off.
