Eagles hope for night game after Lamesa tourney opener

The Pecos Eagles hope they'll have something to do tonight in Lamesa, other than watch a few other teams play basketball.

Pecos' boys will be doing that at 2:30 p.m. today, when they take on the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes in the opening round of the Lamesa Holiday Classic, and they'll be spending the night in Lamesa, where the tournament will continue through Wednesday. But if they win today, coach Joe Flores said they'll also be playing tonight, against the Brownfield Cubs in a 7:30 p.m. contest.

"It's a nine-team tournament, so the bracket's kind of distorted," said Flores, as either the Eagles or Tors will have to win four games in three days in order to claim the tournament title.

Pecos has won two games in a row after a four game losing streak, and are 5-7 on the season. They pulled out a 47-45 win at Van Horn on Dec. 19, as the Eagles had to rally after falling behind by five points at halftime.

The Eagles had a chance to see Lamesa at the start of December in the Gym Bice Tournament at Andrews. The Tors lost to the host Mustangs by 10 points a day before Andrews defeated Pecos by 20 in the tournament semifinals.

"They've got a good group of guards and are pretty physical. They'll pressure you the whole game with man-to-man (defense)," Flores said. "They're an up and down team so we're going to have to be pretty efficient on offense to keep them in check."

Flores said he'd be without one of his guards, Saul Pina, who is on vacation in Mexico for the Christmas-New Year's holiday. However, he said the Eagles would have three other players on the roster for the tournament.

"Lupito (Bustamante) will play; he's eligible during the holiday, and Miguel Estrada and Luis Licon will come with us," the Eagles' coach said. Bustamante, a sophomore post, has yet to play this season for Pecos, while Estrada played one game early in the season on the varsity, but has spent the rest of the season on the junior varsity squad, along with Licon.

If Pecos can win two games today, they'll face either Andrews or Lubbock Roosevelt in the tournament semifinals Tuesday evening. If they lose their opener today, they'll take on the loser of the Andrews- Roosevelt game at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Win or lose, the Eagles will face Andrews this week, when they travel to the Mustangs' home court on Saturday for their first game of 2004. Pecos' girls are off until Friday, when they play their first game of the new year in Crane.
