Turnovers woes plague Pecos in losses to San Eli, EP Austin

The Pecos Eagle boys' basketball team had no more luck against the San Elizario Eagles on Friday at the Sandhills Tournament in Monahans than they did when the two Eagle teams were members of District 2-4A for four seasons.

Playing in a consolation quarterfinal game Friday, San Eli's Luis Gutierrez bombed Pecos for four three-pointers in the first half, as that group of Eagles turned a 7-7 tie in the first period into a 38-11 lead just before halftime, on the way to a 59-35 victory.

Things went a little better for Pecos the following day against the El Paso Austin Panthers, but after going out to an early lead, the Eagles watched the Panthers come back for a 63-52 win, which extended Pecos' losing streak to four games.

"We had a good defensive effort, but what's killing us is the pressure. Whenever we've played bad, that's basically it," said Eagles' coach Joe Flores about Saturday's game. "We were up 10 midway through the second quarter when they decided to put a half-court press on us and we fell apart."

Austin would rally to take a 20-18 lead by halftime, and then outscored the Eagles by five points in the third period, and held that lead through a high-scoring final quarter.

Aside from their problems handling the press, the Eagles also had problems with Austin's 6-foot-7 post Chris Cortez, who scored 18 points. "He had 18 on us, but we really played good defense on him. Most of those points were rebound baskets off misses," Flores said.

Oscar Parada also had 18 points to lead the Eagles, while Jose Reyes had 11 points and Justin Lara added 10 for Pecos.

Against San Eli, Reyes hit a 3-pointer early for Pecos, but Gutierrez had a 3s and two lay-ups to start off the game and then added two more to start the second period after Raul Muela hit two to close out the first quarter, as San Eli scored 16 straight points to turn a 7-7 tie with two minutes left in the period into a 23-7 lead 90 seconds into the second quarter.

"We look like we don't know where we're going in our transition game. Maybe that's my fault, but when we don't know where we're going all those things create turnovers," Flores said.

Gutierrez finished with 24 points for San Eli, while no other player was in double figures for that group of Eagles. Pecos also had only one player score more than 10 points, as Reyes finished with 12.

The Eagles will take their 3-7 record into a 7:30 p.m. game tonight at home against the Alpine Bucks. "We beat Alpine down there (a 49-28 win back on Nov. 24), but in basketball you never know from one game to the next how things will go," Flores said.

Eagles swimmers score Seminole meet victories

The Pecos Eagles swim teams closed out the 2003 portion of their 2003-04 season this past Saturday with their fourth straight sweep of division titles, this time at the Seminole Invitational.

Pecos, which had won titles at home and then in Monahans and Fort Stockton over the past month, took first place in the boys' division with 148 points to 92 for runner-up Big Spring. On the girls' side, the Eagles used a 1-2 finish by their 'A' and 'B' teams in the 400 freestyle relay to pull away from Odessa Permian and win with 152 points to 121 for the Panthers.

"We really had a good meet on Saturday. The meet at Fort Stockton took so long and everyone had to wait around that I think it kind of slowed the kids down. This one was pretty quick and we didn't have a lot of down time, so things ran real smoothly," said Eagles' coach Terri Morse.

Pecos' girls got most of their wins in the second half of Saturday's meet. Along with the 400-meter relay 'A' team, Catherine Minjarez took the 100-meter butterfly, while Susan Moore won the 100-meter freestyle and Lindsey Shaw took the 100-meter breaststroke. In the early part of the meet, Minjarez also won the 200 medley, while Shaw finished second.

Teddie Salcido was third, Jessica Minjarez fifth and Ashley Mendoza ninth in the 200 meter freestyle; Moore was third, Ashley Horsburgh sixth and Betsy Lujan seventh in the 50 free; Lujan was fourth and Amie Reynolds seventh in the 100 free; Salcido was second, Jessica Minjarez fifth, Mendoza seventh and Cynthia Marmalejo 17th in the 500 free; Horsburgh was fifth in the 100 backstroke and Reynolds placed third in the 100 breaststroke. Pecos' other two relay squads, in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle races, both finished third.

The boys had a few more first place finishes individually, and also took two of the three relay events. "It was a good meet to end before Christmas with," Morse said. "The boys did all right in the relays despite not having K.W. (Winkles) there, and Will (Oglesby) didn't feel that good so I decided to false start him in the fly so he could start on the relay."

Matt Elliott ended up winning the 100 butterfly, and Oglesby won his other event, the 100-meter backstroke. His brother Matt took first in the event Winkles normally swims, the 200 medley, while Winkles' brother Kyle placed second. Daniel Quintana took first place in both the 100 and 200 meter freestyle races and Max Key took first in the 50 free and 100 meter breaststroke event The Eagles also took the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay to open and close the meet and on Friday, Michael Juarez won the 1-meter diving competition.

Elliott was eighth and Alonzo Garcia was 26th in the 50 free; Winkles was third in the 100 free; Juarez was seventh in the 500 free; Garcia was 18th in the 100 back, Matt Oglesby was third in the 100 breaststroke and the Eagles' 'B' relay team in the 400 freestyle race placed ninth.

Andrews and Permian tied for third in the boys' division with 84 points, while Hobbs took third on the girls' side with 82 points and Andrews was fourth with 61 points. Morse said the team would practice this week and the week after Christmas in preparation for their first meet of 2004, the Lubbock Invitational on Jan 3-4.
