Pecos boys 3rd in Andrews, girls drop games

The Pecos Eagle boys took home third place this past weekend in the Gym Bice Memorial Tournament in Andrews, falling to the host Mustangs around wins over Lubbock Trinity on Thursday and Snyder on Saturday, while Pecos' girls struggled through three straight losses at the Lamesa Invitational Tournament, losing to Sundown and Lubbock Roosevelt after their opening loss to the host Tornadoes.

The boys, who lost by 40 points in Pecos to Andrews before Thanksgiving, suffered a 20-point loss at Andrews on Friday, losing by a 71-51 final score, but came back the next day to take third with a 50-45 win over Snyder. The girls were held to 19 points for the second game in a row on Friday, in their 60-19 loss to Sundown, then scored a few more points on Saturday but still were beaten by Roosevelt, 62-27.

Oscar Parada and Justin Lara were a combined 13-for-14 from the foul line in the second half against Snyder, as the Eagles overcame a four-point second period to rally for their win over the Tigers.

"We played good against Snyder. Our offense is still now what we want it to be - we still had 21 turnovers versus Snyder, but we're playing real good defense right now," said Eagles' coach Joe Flores.

Snyder's Lee Scott scored 12 points in the first half, as the Tigers took a 22-18 lead. But Scott was held to just four points in the second half, while Parada scored all of his 13 points in the final two periods and Lara finished with 10 of his 12 points in the final two periods.

"I put Victor Reyes on him (Scott) and he did a good job not letting him get the open shot," Flores said.

In the loss to Andrews, the Eagles trailed by a 15-8 score after one period, then were outscored by the Mustangs 21-9 in the second quarter. "We played a bad second quarter again," Flores said. "We had a decent first quarter, but just like in Pecos we had trouble in the second period.

"In the second half we played well. We put a lot of pressure on them in the second half with our full-court pressure, but we were just too far back to catch up," he added.

Jose Reyes hit four 3-pointers in the second half and led Pecos with 17 points, while The Mustangs would go on Saturday to win the tournament, edging Fabens by a 67-65 final score. The win on Saturday got Pecos back to the .500 mark, at 3-3 on the season, going into their game on Tuesday, when they'll take on the Tigers again, this time on Snyder's home court.

Like the boys, the Eagle girls had second quarter problems on Friday. They were shut out by Sundown, which turned a 22-8 lead after one period into a 41-8 advantage at halftime. Pecos was then outscored 9-2 in the third period before almost doubling their point total in the fourth quarter.

Against Lubbock Roosevelt, the Eagles kept things closer, though they fell behind 16-2 after one period. Roosevelt was up 32-11 at halftime and would widen that margin to 46-17 after three periods.

Coach Veronica Valenzuela said the Eagles again had problems getting shots off and in getting defensive rebounds. "It was the same thing as on Thursday against Lamesa. I counted one time where they took about six shots before they finally made it."

"We actually shot the ball a little more on Saturday, but we didn't make anywhere near enough," she said. "The teams we played were tough, but they were not so tough to get beaten as badly as we did."

Leslie Rodriguez scored seven points to lead the Eagles in their loss to Sundown, while Danielle Garcia had nine to lead Pecos on Saturday against Roosevelt. The losses left the Eagles with a 1-5 record for the season.

The Eagles will go to Alpine on Tuesday to face the Bucks, then take on Stanton Thursday in the first round of the Hooptown Classic in Stanton. The boys will face Amarillo Caprock on Thursday to kick off the Sandhills Invitational in Monahans.

Swimmers take division titles in delayed meet

Troubles with the timing system made a long meet on Saturday even longer, but in the end the Pecos Eagle boys and girls swim teams were still able to come away with division titles at the Coker Invitational at Fort Stockton.

Pecos' boys won by nearly 100 points over District 4-4A rival Big Spring, scoring 351 points to 257 for the Steers. The results were a little closer on the girls' side, as the Eagles beat out Odessa Permian by a 287-245 margin in the 11-team field.

Coach Terri Morse switched around some of her swimmers because of SAT tests that a few of the Eagles were taking Saturday morning in Fort Stockton. But she said the problems with the timing system meant the meet began well after the 12 noon starting time.

"That worked out all right because we were so late in starting. I had already scheduled them in later events, so the timing worked out OK," she said, but added the delays may have hurt the overall times at the meet.

"Everybody's times were a little slow, not just our team," Morse said. "It seemed like because the meet dragged on so long everyone got a little tired of sitting around."

One of the changes made due to the SAT testing was moving 200 yard freestyle swimmer Daniel Quintana back in the meet. But the Eagles still managed to get a win in that event when sophomore Matt Elliott placed first with a 1:59.77 time, edging Big Spring's Chris Stokes by .37 second.

"Matt picked us up with Daniel in the SATs. I was hoping for a 1-2 finish, but since Kyle (Winkles) didn't do as well as he can, Matt picked up the slack there," Morse said. "Kyle was a little under the weather, so I think his times weren't indicative of what he can do later."

Winkles finished fourth in the 200 free, while Quintana would later edge Stokes by .11 second to win the 100 freestyle with a 54.52 time.

Winkles and Elliott, along with K.W. Winkles and Will Oglesby, won the 200 medley relay with a 1:48.61 time, while Quintana, Elliott, Oglesby and Max Key took the 200 freestyle with a 1:36.37 time. In the 400 free, it was both Winkles, Key and Quintana taking first place, with a 3:35.69 time.

In the other individual results, K.W. Winkles won the 200 individual medley in 2:13.92, with Matt Oglesby second; Key won the 50 freestyle, with Quintana fourth and Guthrie Long 23rd; Will Oglesby won the 100 yard butterfly with a 56.42 time, with Elliott finishing second and Matt Oglesby sixth; Alonzo Garcia placed 16th in the 100 freestyle; Michael Juarez placed fifth in the 500 free; Will Oglesby won the 100 backstroke in 59.73, with Kyle Winkles fourth; and Key won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:03.70, with K.W. Winkles second and Garcia 11th.

The 200 free 'B' relay of Matt Oglesby, Long, Garcia and Juarez placed seventh, and the same four swimmers placed eighth in the 400 free relay. On Friday, Juarez picked up Pecos' other gold medal scoring 367 points to take the 1-meter diving by 61/2 points over Andrews' Matt Culberson.

Pecos' girls used their overall depth to get their title win, as Permian and Andrews won the three relay events. The Eagles' three gold medals came from Teddie Salcido, who took the 200 yard freestyle in 2:14.67; and Catherine Minjarez who won both the 200 medley, in 2:29.32, and the 100 fly, with a 1:07.24 time.

Lindsey Shaw was second to Minjarez in the 200 medley and later placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke, while Ashley Mendoza was ninth in the 200 medley. Ashley Horsburgh was eighth and Betsy Lujan ninth in the 50 free; Jessica Minjarez was sixth and Amanda Contreras 10th in the 100 fly; Susan Moore was second, Lujan fifth and Amie Reynolds sixth in the 100 free; Salcido was second, Jessica Minjarez fifth and Mendoza seventh in the 500 free; Horsburgh was sixth and Contreras 18th in the 100 backstroke and Reynolds was sixth in the 100 butterfly.

In the relays, Salcido, Shaw Moore and Catherine Minjarez were edged out by .25 second in placing second to Permian in the 200 medley; Horsburgh, Lujan, Reynolds and Moore were second in the 200 free to Andrews while the 'B' relay of Jessica Minjarez, Contreras, Mendoza and Cynthia Marmalejo finished 10th, and in the 400 free relay Catherine Minjarez, Lujan, Horsburgh and Moore were second to Permian and the 'B' relay of Jessica Minjarez, Salcido, Reynolds and Shaw took fourth.

The Eagles have one more meet before the holiday break, this coming Saturday at Seminole.
