Swimmers set for tests, then Stockton meet
The Pecos Eagles swim team will get a look at a trio of new teams this
weekend, and will try to work in some of their races around exams on
Saturday, when they compete at the Coker Invitational in Fort Stockton.
Coach Terri Morse said diving will be on Friday at 6 p.m., followed
by the swimming finals starting at 12 noon on Saturday, though she
added that some of her swimmers will be in Fort Stockton long before
then.
"I've got some taking the SATs, who won't be there right at 12, but
they're taking the SATs in Fort Stockton, so they will be there, though
I'll have to change some of my relays and individual events," Morse
said.
"I had to take Daniel (Quintana) off the medley relay, but he'll
swim in the 200 free (relay), which is OK, because I've got someone who
can take his place," she added.
Morse said she would be minus one diver on Friday, but that all her
swimmers should be available sometime during Saturday's meet.
"Catherine (Minjarez) has been out sick, but I think she should be back
today," she said.
The Eagles have swept the boys and girls titles at each of their
last two meets, the Pecos Invitational, and the Monahans Invitational
two weeks ago. The Eagles edged out San Angelo Central by 28 points for
the girls title at Monahans, while the boys won by a 91-point margin
over the Bobcats at Monahans.
Central won't be at Fort Stockton, but Morse said some of their
District 3-5A rivals will be there, along with a trio of Class 4A
schools from outside of the Eagles' region.
"There won't be any El Paso schools but there will be come Central
Texas teams from Killeen and Harker Heights," she said. "I thought
there would be some teams from New Mexico there, but I would guess
we'll see teams like Carlsbad over at Seminole."
Eagles face Trinity, Lamesa in opening tournament
The Pecos Eagles basketball teams will be heading north for the next
three days to Andrews and Lamesa, where they'll be competing in their
first tournaments of the 2003-04 season.
The boys will be in the Gym Bice Memorial Tournament, starting at 4
p.m. today with a game against Lubbock Trinity Christian. Pecos' girls
will be in action three hours later at Lamesa, where they'll take on
the host Golden Tornadoes in their opening round match-up.
Both Eagle teams will be trying to rebound from sub-par
performances. The boys have been off since Nov. 25, when they were
beaten by Andrews, 68-28, to fall to 1-2 on the season, while the girls
come off a 48-20 loss this past Tuesday night at Midland Trinity.
Coach Joe Flores said his team has looked better in workouts over
the past week since their loss to Andrews. "I think our shooting has
improved over the last week. We've been trying to get in 200 jump shots
a day," he said. "What we really need to work on is our rebounding, and
that's just effort. We're going to do better this weekend."
Trinity Christian is 2-2 on the season after a 71-53 win over
Lubbock Cooper on Nov. 25, a game in which the Lions hit seven 3-point
shots.
"They're a good 3-point shooting team," Flores said. "They're one of
those teams that pushes the ball up court not to get a lay-up but to
shoot 3s. They're not very big, but they're skilled basketball
players."
Flores said today's game would be the last one before the Eagles
would get guards Bino Barreno and Victor Reyes back off the
ineligibility list and into the line-up. "Once Bino and Tick (Reyes)
come back and are our true guards we'll be much better, because we've
got some people playing out of position right now," he said.
The Eagles will face Andrews or Lamesa on Friday. A win would put
Pecos into the semifinals at 8:30 p.m., while a loss would put the
Eagles into a 5:30 p.m. consolation semifinal game.
Pecos' girls will take on Lamesa tonight, and will face either El
Paso Bowie or Sundown in their second round game, at 4 or 6:30 p.m. on
Friday. The Eagles haven't faced the Tors in a while, but several of
Lamesa's players will be familiar from last month's volleyball playoff
game, including Ashley Hunter, their leading hitter who also led the
Tors to the Region I-3A semifinals a year ago and is the team's top
scorer so far this season.
The Eagles have had scoring problems in dropping their last three
games after opening the season with a win at Presidio. "We're still
averaging over 30 turnovers a game and had 38 last night," coach
Veronica Valenzuela said on Wednesday, following the loss at Midland.
"We kept trying to pass over them and made the same mental mistakes
over and over again."
Both the boys and girls junior varsity teams, along with the
freshmen Eagle boys, will be in Fort Stockton this weekend for
tournament play.
