Pecos boys down Alpine, girls edged by Wink
The Pecos Eagle boys scored nine points more in their game Tuesday
night in Alpine against the Bucks than they did in their season opener
last Friday against the Lovington Wildcats. They also gave up 76 points
less than they did to Lovington and came away with their first victory
of the 2003-04 basketball season.
Three days after Lovington became the first team to score 100 points
on Pecos at home in over 20 years, beating the Eagles by a 104-38
margin, Pecos kept Alpine from scoring 30 Monday night, despite four
3-pointers in the game by the Bucks. Oscar Parada scored 14 points and
Justin Lara added 10, as Pecos used a 31-14 scoring advantage in the
second half to defeat Alpine, 49-28.
Meanwhile, up in Wink, the Eagle girls saw a late rally fall short,
as they dropped to 1-1 on the season with a 36-34 loss to the Wildcats
Alpine managed only seven baskets inside the 3-point line and took
just four foul shots on Tuesday, while the Eagles got all but one of
their 20 field goals in the game from inside the 3-point line.
"We didn't press them at all. We just played really good defense,"
said Eagles' coach Joe Flores. "We didn't allow any lay-ups and got
back well in transition."
Jaime Rojo led Alpine with 11 points and Ryan McWilliams had 10, but
the other Buck players combined for just seven points, as Alpine fell
to 0-2 on the season.
Pecos only led Alpine by an 18-14 score at halftime, but outscored
the Bucks 14-6 in the third period, and then added 11 more points to
their lead in the final period.
"We got more aggressive in the second half. I told the team at
halftime they needed to play more aggressive and get more
opportunities," Flores said.
He added that while Parada and Lara led the Eagles in scoring, "Josh
Anchondo and Jose Reyes really stepped it up in the second half."
The win gives the Eagles a 1-1 record going into tonight's home game
against Andrews, the final one before the Thanksgiving break. The
varsity game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. Andrews comes into the
game with a 2-0 record, opening their season with wins last week over
Seminole and Monahans.
Pecos' girls also will be trying to get over the .500 mark tonight
when they play in Jal to close out their pre-holiday schedule. In
Monday's loss at Wink, coach Veronica Valenzuela said the Eagles were
down by double digits in final period before staging a late comeback.
"We were down by 11 with 11/2 minutes to go, and eventually ended up
losing by two," she said. "We had the ball with 21/2 seconds left and
ran a sidelines play for Leslie. She was pushed and made the shot, but
the officials called her for walking. That would have tied the game."
Rodriguez ended up leading all scorers with 15 points. Wink's leader
scorer was Jessica Garcia, who had only seven, but the Wildcats suited
up 15 players for the game compared with only eight for Pecos.
"They had players going in and out of the game," Valenzuela said.
"Wink started running a press on us, and I thought it was going to hurt
us, but the girls did adjust and did a pretty good job. But Wink always
has some big girls who give us a lot of problems."
She said the Wildcats were able to score against Pecos' man-to-man
defense, but the Eagles fared better after they went into a 2-3 zone.
Pecos also had more chances from the foul line, but Valenzuela said "I
told the girls we would have been in a better situation if we had made
our free throws."
The Eagles were 14-for-22 from the line, while Wink only went to the
line 10 times, hitting six shots.
Valenzuela said for tonight's game in Jal, she would be down to
seven players, with the absence of freshman guard Amalie Herrera, who
scored five points on Monday. Vanessa Garcia was the second-leading
scorer in Monday's game, finishing with six.
Pecos lost both the boys and girls junior varsity games on Monday.
The boys by a 49-38 margin and the girls by a 56-7 score. Luis Licon
led the JV boys with 18 points, and Heather Hignojos had four to lead
the girls.
Pecos' swimmers sweep Monahans division titles
The results were tighter over the weekend for the Pecos Eagles swim
team than in their own swim meet a week earlier, but the Eagles still
managed to come away with a pair of victories at the Monahans
Invitational.
Pecos beat out San Angelo Central for first place in both divisions,
with the girls taking their division title with 257 points to 229 for
Central, and 207 points for El Paso Chapin. The margin for the boys was
a little wider, as they scored 328 points to 237 for Central and 191
for El Paso Americus.
"Some of the times were a little off, but we still did well enough
to hold onto first place," said Eagles' coach Terri Morse. "I saw some
things and some different competition we'll see down the road, so it
was a good meet for us."
The boys picked up wins in eight of the 11 events held in Monahans,
plus the one held on Friday in Pecos - the one-meter diving competition
that was moved due to problems with the Monahans High School pool's
board. Michael Juarez won that event with 253 points, while T.J.
Huffman finished second.
Pecos also had a 1-2 finish in one of the swimming events, as K.W.
Winkles took the 200 yard individual medley with a 2:11.57 time, while
Matt Oglesby was second with a 2:16 time. Later in the meet, Winkles
would place third in the 100 yard breastroke, won by Max Key with a
1:03.75 time.
Winkles, Will Oglesby, Kyle Winkles and Daniel Quintana started off
the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, with a 1:48.22 time.
Later, Key, Juarez, Matt Elliott and Will Oglesby would take the 200
freestyle relay in 1:37.14, and Quintana, Elliott, Key and K.W. Winkles
would win the 400 freestyle relay, with a 3:30.52 time.
Key and Will Oglesby won both their individual events. Key took the
50 freestyle by almost two seconds, winning with a 22.70 effort to go
along with his breaststroke victory, while Oglesby won the 100 yard
butterfly in 56.37 and then took the 100 yard backstroke with a 60.27
time.
The other medal winners for the boys were Quintana, who was second
in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 free, Elliott, who was third
in the 100 fly, and Kyle Winkles, third in the 100 backstroke.
The girls had two first place finishes on Saturday, from the 400
yard freestyle relay team of Catherine Minjarez, Jessica Minjarez,
Betsy Lujan and Susan Moore, and from Moore in the 100 yard freestyle.
The relay team had a 4:07.41 time to beat San Angelo Central by five
seconds, while Moore won with a 59.91 time, edging out El Paso
Americus' Corina Gamboa.
The 200 medley relay team of Teddie Salcido, Lindsey Shaw, Catherine
Minjarez and Lujan took third, while the 200 free relay team of Lujan,
Moore, Jessica Minjarez and Amie Reynolds finished fifth.
Individually, the other medal winners for Pecos included Jessica
Minjarez, third in the 200 free and the 500 free ; Catherine Minjarez,
second in the 200 medley and 100 fly; Shaw, third in the 200 medley;
and Salcido, second in the 500 free by .39 seconds to Hobbs' Hilary
Eades.
The Eagles will have this weekend off, then will compete in the
Coker Invitational at Fort Stockton the first week of December.
