Eagle squads open seasons in basketball

The season opens tonight for both the Pecos Eagles boys and girls basketball team, with the girls facing one of their District 4-3A rivals while the boys take on both a non-district and out-of-state opponent tonight at the Pecos High School gym.

The girls are headed for Presidio to face the Blue Devils in varsity and junior varsity games, scheduled for 4:30 and 6 p.m. Meanwhile, Pecos' boys will be at home for JV and varsity games against Lovington, N.M. Wildcats, starting at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Pecos' girls got their only district win of the 2002-03 season against Presidio, which opened its 2003-04 season this past Tuesday with a 54-35 loss at Alpine. The Blue Devils were led by Yvette Medrano's 16 points in the loss.

"Presidio may have a few players missing. I think a couple of them moved away," said Eagles' coach Veronica Valenzuela, who saw a couple of her returning players from last year opt not to participate in basketball this season.

Pecos does have a couple of starters back, including Leslie Rodriguez, who led all scorers last season in the Eagles' win over the Blue Devils in district play.

Lovington, like Presidio, may be short a few players tonight, but for a different reason. The Wildcats' football team is in the New Mexico Class 3A state championship game tonight, so Lovington may not be at full strength this evening.

The boys also are a few players short of what they expected to have on the varsity squad this season. The Eagles will have some experience in the backcourt, with senior guard Bino Barreno, Oscar Parada and Jose Reyes, but will be young on the front lines, with Justin Lara the lone returning player for Pecos.

Pecos' junior high gold teams also were scheduled to play at home this weekend in their own 'B' boys tournament, but coach Keith Windham said the tournament has been cancelled. The eighth grade boys opened their season this past Monday with a 51-14 loss to Greenwood, while Pecos' seventh grade gold team defeated Greenwood, 37-14, and the purple team was beaten by the Rangers, 42-38.
