District playoff qualifiers face 3-3A teams tonight
The first round of the Class 3A playoffs is tonight for the Monahans
Loboes, Greenwood Rangers and Kermit Yellowjackets, with the Jackets
and Loboes playing in the Midland-Odessa area while the Rangers travel
to San Angelo for their bi-district match-up.
Greenwood, which lost in the Class 3A-Division II state finals in
overtime last year, will take on the Merkel Badgers at Angelo State
University, while Kermit will be in the other Division II bi-district
game, at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa against the Sweetwater Mustangs.
Meanwhile, Monahans, which reached the regional finals a year ago in
Class 3A-Division I play, will be at Grande Communications Stadium in
Midland for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Snyder Tigers.
Greenwood, 7-2 on the season, is favored in their game against
Merkel, but the Badgers did something this season the Rangers couldn't
do - go into Monahans and beat the Loboes. Merkel opened their season
with a win at Monahans, while Greenwood lost by one point there in
October, which allowed the Loboes to win the District 4-3A title.
Merkel is 7-3 on the season, and finished third in District 3-3A
this season. Greenwood led District 4-3A in offense for the second
straight year, but even after allowing Pecos just 153 yards in last
week's 37-7 win still surrendered 300 yards per game on defense this
season.
Monahans has won four straight games since their 7-0 loss at Lamesa
in early October, averaging over 30 points per game during that span.
Snyder was the 3-3A runner up this season, and split their two games so
far against 4-3A opponents, losing narrowly at home to Greenwood while
routing Fort Stockton.
Both Kermit and Sweetwater suffered two-point losses to Greenwood
during regular season play, but the Mustangs come into the game with a
7-2 record and five straight victories. Kermit is 6-4 and advanced to
the playoffs last week by beating Fort Stockton, 43-22 to claim the
final district playoff berth.
The Monahans-Snyder winner will take on either Borger or Brownfield
in the Region I-3A-Division I semifinals. The Sweetwater-Kermit winner
faces either Perryton or Lubbock Cooper in their Region I-3A-Division
II quarterfinal match-up, while the Greenwood-Merkel winner will
advance to face Dalhart or Littlefield in their quarterfinal game.
Flu hurts Eagles' opponents going into Pecos Invitational
Pecos Eagles swimming coach Terri Morse is hoping to have a full
squad available for the first time in a while this weekend, when the
Eagles host 13 other teams at the Pecos Invitarional. But Morse said a
lot of the other teams entered will be missing swimmers when the timed
finals start at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
"We had 250 swimmers entered, but that's down to 222 now with all
the scratches. The flu has hit everybody," Morse said.
The Eagles already have run into flu problems during their meets
over the past three weeks. For Saturday, Morse said, "I'm pretty sure
everybody will be back for now, but I'm still waiting to see about Kyle
Winkles. He stayed home from school today, so we'll just have to wait
and see tomorrow if he can or he can't."
"Michael (Juarez) is going to be back this week, so we'll have him
diving," she added. Juarez hadn't been sick, but had been recovering
from a facial cut suffered in an incident outside Saragosa Hall in late
October.
Morse said on Monday his absence last Saturday in Midland may have
kept Pecos' boys from pulling off a sweep of the Midland High Bulldogs
and Lee Rebels. The Eagles defeated Lee, but lost by six points to
Midland, while Pecos' girls fell to both Midland squads.
The girls won their last invitational meet, two weeks ago at Big
Spring, while the boys were shorthanded that day and placed third,
behind Big Spring and Odessa Permian. Morse said the Steers and Pecos'
other District 3-4A schools would be at the meet this weekend, along
with Odessa High, Midland Christian, Seminole, Pampa and the Lubbock
ISD schools.
Morse said her swimmers would mostly be entered in the same events
as a week ago in Midland. "Max (Key) will swim the breaststroke this
week instead of the 100 free. He'll still be in the 50 free, and I'll
swim Will (Oglesby) in the 500 instead of the backstroke. I think most
everybody will swim two individual and two relays," she said.
The competition will begin at 5 p.m. today with a 1-meter diving
event, while Saturday's races will all be timed finals.
