Eagles, other 4-3A runners fail to advance at regionals
District 4-3A runners failed to place among the top finishers on
Saturday at the Region I-3A Cross-Country Meet in Lubbock, as the Pecos
Eagle boys finished 19th overall in the Class 3A Division at Mae
Simmons Park.
"Three of my boys ran their best times, but that wasn't good enough
with people running 15s and 16s," coach Rudy Jurado said about the
regional meet. "Gonzalo (Reyna) ran a 19:24 and Miguel (Estrada) ran a
19:28."
Those times put the two Eagle runners in 108th and 109th place in
the field of 158 boys. The best finish out of all district runners was
a 17:59 time over the three-mile course by Fort Stockton's David Palma,
who finished 47th, while Gary Lackey of Brownfield won the 3A regional
title with a 15:16 time.
The Eagles' other results were a 20:31 by Joshua Cobos, who finished
137th, a 20:41 by Pete Juarez, who was 141st, a 22:03 by Luis Nunez,
who was 150th, and a 23:33 by Jeremiah Mora, who placed 154th.
The Eagles had only one runner on the girls' side, sophomore
Jennifer Martinez, who finished 103rd out of 169 entries with a 14:12
time. "That was far from her fasted time. She ran a 13:24 this season,
Jurado said.
Brooke Shepherd of Canyon won the two-mile race with an 11:41 time,
while the best time of any 4-3A runner was by Presidio's Kelly Coffman
who finished with a 13:10 time and took 43rd place.
Canyon won both the girls and boys team titles, with Perryton second
in the boys' division and Borger second on the girls' side. Monahans'
boys placed just ahead of Pecos in 18th place, while on the girls' side
Presidio was 16th, Kermit 22nd and Monahans 24th.
Jurado said he was hoping to improve on this year's results for the
boys' next fall. "I've got three pretty good runners coming out.
They're sophomores and we've got mostly a sophomore team right now, so
we should be a stronger team next year," he said.
Eagles in need of post players for hoop season

The Pecos Eagles will have a little more experience in the backcourt
and a little less in the frontcourt this season, as they try to make up
a lot of ground in the District 4-3A girls basketball standings for the
2003-04 season.
Regular season play opens next week for Pecos' girls, who had to
cancel their two preseason scrimmages this week due to volleyball
playoff conflicts. The Eagles will start their 2003-04 season next
Tuesday night with a non-district game in Presidio against the Blue
Devils, the only district team Pecos managed a win against last season,
when they went 1-9 in district and 7-15 overall.
With fewer than 30 girls participating in preseason workouts,
Eagles' coach Veronica Valenzuela said Pecos would only have varsity
and junior varsity teams this season. "I had a few more come out
(Monday), but a few others decided to concentrate on other things,"
Valenzuela said.
She said senior Natalia Ornelas, who started at guard last season,
is not playing this year, but most of Pecos' other returning players
also are guards, including Danielle Garcia, Mari Mendoza and Stephanie
Herrera. Leslie Rodriguez also has played guard at times, though she
started last season at forward for the Eagles. Vanessa Garcia is the
other returning forward for Pecos, while Rodriguez and Herrera are the
top returning scorers for Pecos from last season.
"I've got five back, and now I've got to see if I can find five
more, Valenzuela said. "I lost both post players (Jessica Martinez and
Tiana Terry), so I'm looking for someone to step up there."
So far, she said she hasn't been able to look at all of her players
at one time. "I haven't had a day when I've had them all here,"
Valenzuela said. "I had a lot of them out sick last week, and the girls
on the volleyball team just came out on Thursday."
She added that the end of the six-weeks grading period may also
affect the overall numbers for the varsity and JV teams before next
Tuesday's season opener against Presidio.
The Eagles will get to play the Blue Devils at home in district
play, but that won't be until the second week of February, and their
first varsity home game won't take place until the week after New
Year's, when they host Crane. Pecos has trips to Wink, Jal, N.M.,
Midland, Lamesa, Alpine, Stanton, Fort Davis and Crane on the schedule
before they get to play their first varsity home contest, though the JV
will get one pre-holiday game at home, on Dec. 15 against Fort Davis.
