Shorthanded Pecos boys miss Midland sweep

Pecos Eagles coach Terri Morse believes one missing swim team member may have cost the Eagle boys a shot at a sweep of their dual meet on Saturday against the Midland High Bulldogs and Lee Rebels at the COM pool in Midland.

The Eagles defeated the Rebels by a 68-33 margin, while the Bulldogs were able to edge out Pecos to win their head-to-head competition, 54-48.

"What kind of hurt us going against Midland High was not having Michael (Juarez), Morse said. They beat us by six points, and I think we could have beaten them if we had had Michael in diving and in one of the relays, because he would have helped my 'B' relay team."

Juarez, who won the district and regional diving titles last season, has missed the Eagles' last three meets after being injured in a fight in late October. T.J. Hardwick ended up placing third and Guthrie Long finished sixth in the 1-meter diving competition for the Eagles.

The boys still managed several of victories on the afternoon, including two out of the three relay events. "I was pleased with the results overall. We beat Midland in the 200 medley relay and that was one race I thought they would have us," Morse said.

Will Oglesby, K.W. Winkles, Matt Elliott and Max Key took the 200 medley by one second over Midland High, with a 1:44.67 time. Later, Oglesby, Elliott, Kyle Winkles and Daniel Quintana swam a 1:38.60 to win the 200 freestyle by almost 13 seconds over Midland High, though the Bulldogs came back to beat the Eagles by a little under four seconds in the 400 free relay. Quintana, Key and both Winkles swam a 3:36.28 in that race.

Key and Oglesby also took first in one of their two individual events. Key won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.84 and placed second in the 100 free, while Oglesby took the 100-yard backstroke with a 60.26 time and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly.

K.W. Winkles finished second in the 200 individual medley and placed third in the 100-yrd breaststroke; Quintana was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 free; Elliott was third in both the 50 free and the 100 fly; Matt Oglesby was third in the 100 free and fifth in the 200 medley; and Kyle Winkles took third in the 100 backstroke.

"Will swam his fastest time of the year in the fly and K.W. swam his best time in the I.M.," Morse said. "He also swam his best time in the backstroke."

The Eagles' 200 freestyle 'B' relay team of Matt Oglesby, Hardwick, Long and Alonzo Garcia finished third in their race, and the medley relay 'B' team of Matt Oglesby, Kyle Winkles, Garcia and Long finished fourth.

Both Midland schools came away with wins over Pecos' girls on Saturday. The Rebels beat the Eagles by a 58-43 margin, while the Bulldogs outscored Pecos, 78-20.

"The swimming wasn't too bad. What hurt us I think was we didn't have any divers, but the girls came through in a couple of races, so I was pleased with that," Morse said.

Pecos' best finishes came in the 200 freestyle relay and in the 100-yard breaststroke. Lindsey Shaw took second there with a 1:16.75 time, while in the relay, Susan Moore, Ashley Horsburgh, Amie Reynolds and Betsy Lujan took second place, with a 1:54.45 time, 51/2 seconds behind Midland High.

In the 200 medley relay, Moore, Shaw, Teddie Salcido and Catherine Minjarez placed third, and the 'B' relay of Horsburgh, Reynolds, Jessica Minjarez and Ashley Mendoza was fourth. In the 400 free relay, Moore, Lujan, Horsburgh and Catherine Minjarez took third and Salcido, Reynolds, Jessica Minjarez and Shaw placed fifth. The 'B' relay in the 200 freestyle; Mendoza, Jessica Minjarez, Cynthia Marmolejo and Amanda Contreras, finished fifth.

In the other races, Lujan was fourth and Contreras was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle; Moore was fourth and Lujan was fifth in the 100 free; Salcido placed fourth and Marmolejo was sixth in the 200 free; Jessica Minjarez was fourth and Mendoza fifth in the 500 free; Horsburgh was fifth and Salcido sixth in the 100 backstroke; Reynolds was fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke and Catherine Minjarez was fifth and Contreras was sixth in the 100 fly.

The Eagles' next meet will be their final one scheduled at home this season, the Pecos Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Morse said all of the District 3-4A teams, along with Seminole, Pampa, Odessa High and the Lubbock schools are scheduled to compete at the meet on Friday and Saturday.
