Swimmers hold second meet against Ft. Stockton
The Pecos Eagles swim team will hold its second dual meet of the season
against the Fort Stockton Panthers, and the first of two dual meets
this week, this evening, when they host Fort Stockton at the Pecos High
School Natatorium.
Coach Terri Morse said swimming events will begin at 6 p.m.,
following the diving competition at 4:30 p.m.
Pecos will be one diver short again this week, after senior Michael
Juarez suffered a facial cut in an altercation outside Saragosa Hall
two weeks ago. "He just got his stitches out, but he's going to be out
one more week," Morse said. "I'm hoping he can dive in the Pecos
Invitational (on Nov. 14)."
Morse said Juarez may be able to swim next week even if he can't
dive, while on the girls' side, the Eagles will be missing either one
or two swimmers tonight.
"Susan (Moore) is not swimming tonight. She's sick and Teddie
(Salcido) has been sick, but I think she is going to swim, so it may
just be Susan tonight and on Saturday," Morse said, when the Eagles
will take on Midland High and Midland Lee.
The Eagles were without Juarez and both Will and Matthew Oglesby
last Saturday in Big Spring, and placed third in the Big Spring
Invitational. The girls, meanwhile, took first place overall in their
division.
Three weeks ago in Fort Stockton, Pecos' boys defeated the Panthers
by a 116-61 margin, while the Eagle girls' won by a 117-23 score over
Fort Stockton. Several Pecos swimmers competed in different events than
their usual ones that night, and Morse said she would probably move her
swimmers around again this evening.
"Saturday we'll have everybody in their regular events. We'll have
to to try and beat Midland," Morse said.
Eagles close out season, look towards 2004

Staff Writer
The Greenwood Rangers are looking towards next week, while the Pecos
Eagles are looking towards next year in football, as the teams come
into the final regular season game at Eagle Stadium.
How well the Eagles are also able to look towards Friday night,
while looking at some players who will be back for the 2004 season,
will probably determine how well Pecos does against Greenwood when the
teams meet at 7:30 p.m.
The Rangers are 6-2 on the season. They were idle last week, but
clinched a playoff spot thanks to Pecos' 24-7 loss at Fort Stockton.
They're also 2-1 in District 4-3A, while the Eagles are 3-6 after their
fifth straight loss and are 0-3 in district play.
First-year head coach Patrick Willis is going through some of the
same participation problems past Eagle coaches have had to endure,
leading up to Friday's season-ending game. Several players quit the
team after Pecos' current losing streak began, and Willis said, "Monday
we only had 17 kids out here. That means about half of them were
absent."
"Tuesday we had mostly everybody here and we had no problems," he
said, but added that Wednesday's workout was sluggish, and the problem
of missing players was not limited to this week alone.
"We have had problems with people missing practices all year long.
When you miss two days and only really have three days to work out you
have a problem putting things in," he said. "We've had kids who are
either sick or are late for class and are in OCS (Lamar). That
translates in games into the mental breakdowns and lack of discipline
because of the lack of practice and preparedness."
"I think we have some good kids who can compete, but we have to
change the attitude here, and that's what the off-season program is
about," he said. "I'm probably going to have to fight a lot of people
who are not used to the way I'm going to push them, but I think the end
results will speak for themselves."
The Eagles played a good first half against Monahans two weeks ago,
then fell apart in the third quarter due to turnovers and saw a 7-0
halftime deficit turn into a 37-0 loss. Last week, Pecos played a flat
game in Fort Stockton, but still trailed by only seven until the third
quarter, when the Panthers kicked a field goal after an Eagle turnover,
then added a touchdown in the final period.
The week before, Greenwood went into Fort Stockton and came out with
a 43-13 victory. The Rangers have been held under 30 points only twice
this season, and won both those games, but overall defense has been the
main reason while they were unable to repeat last year's undefeated
regular season record, a year that ended with an overtime loss in the
Class 3A state championship game.
"On defense we lost four all-state starters," said Rangers' coach
Bob Purser. "Last year we were fortunate enough to have enough kids
that we didn't have to play a lot of people both ways, but this year
they've had to play both ways."
"They've played a lot tougher schedule than anybody in the
district," said Willis, while adding, "If there's a place where they're
more in our league it's defensively."
On offense, Greenwood again is led this year by running back Jeremy
Audis and quarterback Dawson Wilbur, though they've had to do more on
their own this season, as the Rangers' line hasn't overpowered all
their opponents as they did in 2002.
"Their line's a decent line. It's not outstanding, but Wilbur and
Audis are big-time players and big-time players make big-time plays,"
Willis said. Wilbur has thrown for 1,096 yards and nine touchdowns in
eight games and run for another 517 yards and six scores.
"He hasn't had the supporting cast he had last year, but I think
he's done a great job," said Purser. Wilbur's main targets have been
receivers Jimmy Brooks, Jarral Brooks and Audas, who've accounted for
over 830 of the Rangers' receiving yards in 2003.
Audas is also second in the district in rushing with 811 yards and
has scored 12 TDs despite injury problems earlier this year. "He missed
most of the Kermit game, but he's healthy now," said Purser, whose team
had last week off to heal up some of their minor injuries.
That includes an injury to Wilbur that has hampered his kicking a
bit this season. "Wilbur had a little bit of a leg injury, but kicking
is the only thing that seems to bother him," Purser said.
He added that fullback Blake Higgins also has been bothered by
injuries, which has limited his time at linebacker this season. "We're
playing him more at fullback right now. He's not on defense as much as
we'd like," Purser said.
Last season, Greenwood ran and passed at will on Pecos in a 58-12
victory. For Friday, Willis said, "I think we've got a good defensive
game plan to slow them down - I really do, if the kids will believe in
it."
Pecos' running game, which has managed just 572 yards this season,
showed signs of life in the third quarter last week with freshman Luis
Ortega running the ball. He gained 71 yards on 12 carries during that
period, though his fumble on a 3rd-and-1 play stopped the Eagles as
they appeared headed towards a possible tying touchdown.
"Cowboy (Ortega) is starting tonight. We've got to get some running
going early to keep the ball out of their offense's hands. We just need
to try and not make any mistakes on offense," the Eagles' coach said.
Friday's game will be the final one for 15 Eagle seniors out of the
32 players on the current Pecos roster.

Cross-country runners head for I-3A meet
Pecos Eagle cross country runners will be in Lubbock on Saturday,
seeking to improve on their district times and earn state berths, when
they compete in the Region I-3A meet at Mae Simmons Park.
The girls' division will run at 11 a.m., followed by the boys' race
at 11:30 in Lubbock, coach Rudy Jurado said.
Pecos' boys won their second straight District 4-3A cross-country
title on Oct. 27 in Monahans, earning them a tri p to regionals.
Sophomore Jennifer Martinez also earned a region berth by placing third
in the girls' division. The Eagles did not have enough runners to
qualify for a team score, while the other runner in that division,
Jasmine Rodriguez, will be an alternate for Saturday's race.
While the boys edged Monahans for the team title, the best
individual result was a third place by Gonzalo Reyna, with a 19:24
time. Fort Stockton's David Palma took the individual title, with an
18:47 time.
"The guys are going to have to have their best runs of the season to
come close to placing," said Jurado. "They're going to have to run in
the low 18s."
Martinez ran a 13:34 time, which was a little closer to the first
place finisher in her division. Kermit's Amber Jones had a 13:21 time,
but Jurado said, "Jennifer's best time is a 13:24, and she'll have to
run in the low 12s in order to have a chance as well."
Presidio's Kelly Coffman placed second on the girls' side, and the
Blue Devils took the district title, with Kermit second as a team.
The Top 10 finishers, along with the first and second place teams,
at Saturday's meet will advance to the state cross country finals later
this month in Georgetown, north of Austin.
Sub-varsity football teams face Rangers end years
One Pecos Eagle sub-varsity football team will be trying to complete an
unbeaten season tonight, while two others will be trying to end losing
streaks in their final games for 2003, when the Eagles take on the
Greenwood Rangers.
Pecos will play both purple and gold games against Greenwood's
seventh graders today, and will play only single games against the
eighth graders and junior varsity. The seventh grade purple and eighth
grade games will start at 4 p.m. at the Crockett Middle School field
and Eagle Stadium, while the seventh grade purple game will follow the
eighth grade game at the high school field.
The JV will be in Greenwood to face the Rangers, with game time
moved from 7 to 5:30 p.m.
The seventh grade purple team is 7-0 after their 34-8 victory last
week at Fort Stockton, while the gold team improved to 4-2 on the
season with their 14-12 victory over the Panthers.
However, the eighth grade team will be trying to bounce back from a
62-0 loss a week ago at Fort Stockton, while the JV lost at home by a
38-6 score. The losses left the eighth graders with a 1-5-1 mark, and
the JV with a 2-7 record.
The eighth grade gold team also lost last week, 20-16, and ended
their year with a 3-3 mark, while Pecos' ninth grade team had to cancel
its final month of games, after grades forced the Eagles to combine
their JV and freshman squads.
