Bears place seven players on all-district grid team

Balmorhea Bears’ seniors Ryan Woodruff and Brandon Mendoza were named to the All-District 1A-Division six-man football team as a first-team selection on both offense and defense, while junior Sean Enloe was a first team selection on defense in voting by the district’s four coaches.

A total of seven Bears were chosen to the first and second-team squads. Woodruff was selected at wide receiver on offense and at lineman on defense, while Mendoza was named at utility back on offense and as a utility player on defense. Enloe was chosen at cornerback by the district’s coaches.

The Bears went winless in District 1-A, going 0-3 and 2-7 overall while playing with only 13 players on their varsity roster. But all the district games were close, and Balmorhea had a number of other players named to the second team squad, including Mendoza, who was picked as a linebacker on defense and as both a running back and special teams player on offense. Woodruff was also chosen as second team punter for the 1-A six-man squad.

The other selections to the second team on offense were senior quarterback Jose Rodriguez, senior tight end Johnathan Carrasco, junior center Russell Garlick and freshman kicker Gabriel Jurado. On defense, Carrasco was a second team selection on the defensive line, Rodriguez was chosen at safety, Garlick was picked at linebacker and Jurado was named as nose guard.

District champion Dell City had senior running back David Pinon named both Player of the Year and Offensive MVP for District 1-A, while the Cougars’ coach Todd Lawdermilk was selected as Coach of the Year. The Newcomer of the Year honor went to Sierra Blanca freshman running back Andrew Virdell.

Eagle powerlifters host meet as opener for 2007 schedule

The Pecos Eagles powerlifting team will have four regular season meets this season, starting with their own event on Jan. 13 at the old Pecos High School gym.

The powerlifters will have two meets in January and two in February to qualify for regional competition, which will be on March 3 for the girls and March 10 for the boys. Sites of those meets have not been announced, but the state meet for the girls is set for March 16-17 in Killeen and on March 23-24 for the boys, at Alden.

Pecos didn’t qualify any lifters for state a year ago, but coach Fred Howard’s team sent a number of lifters to regional, most of whom return for the 2007 season. Aside from their home meet, their other regular season events this season are scheduled for Monahans, Kermit and McCamey.
