Scholastic Book Fair planned

A Scholastic Book Fair will be held from 8 until 5 p.m., beginning Monday, Dec. 6 until Friday, Dec. 10 at the Barstow Gym.

Books make great stocking stuffers for Christmas.

The event is sponsored by the Pecos Headstart.

Chabarria ends apprentice course

Air Force Airman Amanda S. Chabarria has graduated from the financial management apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Tx.

The student was taught the principles of accounting, including double entry, accrual, and general ledger systems; appropriation of funds and funding procedures; use of automated date processing equipment; manual and mechanized billing and collection procedures; and compiling and preparing end-of-month statements and reports.

Chabarria is the daughter of Robert R. and Linda S. Chabarria, of Pecos.

In 1998, she graduated from Pecos High School.

Delaying birth is risky

Women who put off having a baby might be hurting their chances to conceive.

"A woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have, so as she ages, the fertility and the health of the eggs begin to decrease," said Dr. Sandra Carson.

Eggs from women at age 30 have about a 19 percent chance of begin chromosomally abnormal, whereas at age 40, it's 39 percent. At age 40, fertility begins to plummet, the rate of miscarriages soar, and the rate of birth defects dramatically increases. However, all hope is not lost for women in their 40s.

"A woman over 40 can still have a healthy pregnancy with eggs donated from a younger woman because the chances of pregnancy are related to the age of the egg, and not the uterus," Carson said.
