Tuition offer for future ESL teachers

Interested in earning certification to teach bilingual education or English as a Second Language (ESL)? How about getting free tuition? The University of Texas of the Permian Basin's Bilingual Program will host an information session at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the student lounge.

The new Title VII program can fund 20 under-graduate students and 10 graduate students. Applications are now being accepted for positions that will begin in January. Susan Martin Lara, Ed.D., UTPB coordinatory of bilingual education, said tuition will be funded and books will be loaned to students on the program.

This is the second grant program that will be in effect next semester. An additional grant benefit is that graduate students serving as mentors in the program also receive tuition.

Title VII stands for the Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The federally funded programs are designed to prepare teachers to teach in the Permian Basin region. The grants provide mentoring and training for current and future bilingual/ESL teachers. All students in the program are required to serve as mentors for others planning careers in education. Graduate students mentor under-graduates, while under-graduate students mentor high school students.

The Title VII undergraduate scholarships are for:

· Students who wish to become bilingual or ESL teachers or

· Students who wish to teach in any area and would like to add a bilingual or ESL endorsement.

Title VII graduate scholarships are for:

· Students who are certified in bilingual or ESL education and who wish to advance their careers in education.

· Students who want to obtain a bilingual or ESL certification, possibly leading to Master's degree.

Interested persons and prospect students are invited to attend the session. For more information call 552-2123.

Important meeting planned

A very important meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 1, at Austin Elementary School Cafeteria.

The meeting is for anyone interested in participating in the 1999-2000 PTO activities.

The main concern will be to focus on the children's playground.

Please make every effort to attend.
