Mariotts tell of new daughter

Dean and Jill Mariott are proud to announce the birth of their first child, a daughter, Taylor Nicole Mariott, born Friday, Sept. 17, at 9:08 a.m., at Covenant Hospital (formerly Methodist Hospital) in Lubbock.

Little Taylor weighed eight pounds, four ounces and was 20 and 1/2 inches long.

Her grandparents are Bobby and Shirley Mariott of Midland and Wayne and Lou Garrett of Gruver.

She is also the great-granddaughter of Ella Chasteen and the late Clyde Chasteen of Pecos, and Ernest Mariott and the late Cleta Mariott of Izora.

Flanagan earns master's degree

More than 870 students at Texas Tech University received degrees during 1999 summer commencement exercises.

Graduating students included the following, Timothy M. Flanagan, of Pecos, who received a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education.

He is the son of Maritza Flanagan of Pecos.

Deutschman heads Smithers in Pecos

Archie J. Deutschman III has joined Akron, Ohio-based Smither's Scientific Services Inc., as general manager of its subsidiary Smithers Transportation Test Center in Pecos.

He replaces Ted L. Yost, who decided to leave the company to pursue other interests.

Deutschman brings to his job in Pecos an extensive background on driveline and engine manufacturing and engineering. He has held quality, warranty and manufacturing management positions and responsibilities with tier one and aftermarket suppliers.

Most recently, he served as general manager of Engine Masters Inc., an engine manufacturing and remanufacturing company with facilities in North Kansas City, Missouri and Dallas.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Arizona, and is a licensed professional engineer registered in the State of Texas. He is also a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and has a Certificate in Diesel Engine and Construction Equipment Mechanics, T.S.T.C.

He and his wife, Cheryl, and family have relocated from Kansas City to Pecos.

Smithers Transportation Test Center is the world's largest independently owned and operated automotive test facility. It provides year-round impartial and analytical testing of vehicles and their components. Testing of parts and components, such as tires, fuels and lubricants is also conducted at the 5,800-acre complex.
