Pecos students net degrees

Sul Ross State University conferred degrees on 196 students during summer commencement exercises, held Saturday, Aug. 14, in Graves-Pierce Complex.

Pecos graduates included, Ruben Cervantes, Jr., Master of Education, Counseling; Lucas Markham, Bachelor of Science, Biology; Charlie Wilson, Bachelor of Science, Kinesiology and Sports Science.

Graduates from Balmorhea were Mark Dominguez, Bachelor of Science, Kinesiology and Sports Science and Molly Mellard, Bachelor of Science, Interdisciplinary Studies.

Children face risk of exposure

With more time spent outdoors during summer, children are at risk for exposure to high levels of ground-level ozone. This type of ozone is formed by exhaust from petrochemical plants or automobiles and can damage body tissue.

"Children have a growing respiratory tract and breathe in more air per pound of body weight than adults," said Dr. Nick Hanania, a lung specialist at Baylor College of Medicine. "With ozone exposure, we tend to see a drop in lung function."

Sunlight, heat and humidity, which are highest at midday, all contribute to high ground-level ozone levels. Hanania suggests setting children's outdoor playtime to either the early morning or late afternoon.

"Ozone overexposure can result in temporary chest tightness, a cough and breathing problems," Hanania said. "People should take local ozone warnings seriously."
