Odessa College announces  Pecos director

Odessa College announced the appointment of Michelle Workman as new director of the Pecos Community College Center/Odessa College.

Workman, former career planning coordinator for the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD, joined OC's staff July 28 and will be stationed at OC's future extension center in Pecos. The center will have the potential to conduct many classes currently offered at the main campus, according to Ned Pilcher, dean of arts, humanities and distance education.

"I love challenges," said Workman. "This is a great chance to help the community and area."

The new director noted one of her challenges will be setting the groundwork for students considering college at the extension center.

"I plan to spend a lot of time with the Pecos High School counselors. It's also important to include parents in the process."

Workman, a Pecos native, worked in the school system for 10 years. She graduated from Midland College with an associate's degree and Texas Tech University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education with a bilingual certification. Workman received her master's degree in counseling from Sul Ross University.

She began her career as an elementary school teacher, but for the last seven years, Workman has been involved in developing and administering a student career development program. In her last year with the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD, Workman also served as a middle school counselor and GED district examiner.

"My new position at OC is a continuation of the work I've been doing in the school district - helping students and parents prepare for the future."

Workman's immediate plans include establishing a temporary office at 320 S. Oak, Suite 4. She can be reached at 445-5535 or fax 445-5534.

"Everything is in the planning stage," said the new director, "except our mission - which is to serve the community...I'm ready to go."
