Lauren Garduno, of Abilene, has been appointed as the Texas Department
of Transportaion Odessa District Engineer, filling a position that had
been vacant since the death of Jose E. Morales on March 23.
In the interim, Gary J. Law, the district's director of transportation

In his new position, Garduno will oversee highway construction and maintenance

As the director of operations in the Abilene District, Garduno was responsible
for that district's field operations in construction, maintenance, traffic
and aviation. He started his TxDOT career as a summer employee, working
five summers in TxDOT's engineering office in Borger while earning a bachelor
of science degree in civil engineering from Texas Tech University at Lubbock.
He joined the department full time in 1988 as an engineering assistant
in the Abilene district design office where he reviewed plans, specifications
and estimates for highway construction projects throughout the 13-county
district, as well as designing construction projects for farm-to-market
roads in the Houston and Austin districts.
Garduno moved to the Abilene Area Office in 1990, where he gained additional
experience in highway design and construction. During this time, he also
