Gutierrez' tell of new son

Hector and Leticia Gutierrez of Pecos announce the birth of their son, Ethan Dallas Gutierrez.

Little Ethan was born at 6:24 p.m., June 30, at Odessa Regional Hospital.

He weighed seven pounds, 15 ounces and was 18 1/2 inches long at birth.

Grandparents are Petra Gutierrez of Pecos and Elena Villareal of Odessa.

He was welcomed home by his three sisters, Vanessa, Nikki and Kiara and two brothers, Gonzalo and Aaron Gutierrez.

New grant helps students

High school graduates from the year 1998-1999, enrolling at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin this fall could find their education practically paid thanks to a new grant program through the State of Texas.

The TEXAS Grant Program, which stands for Toward Excellence, Access and Success, rewards graduates of Texas high schools who completed the recommended or advanced high school curriculum and who demonstrate financial need.

"There is no reason, with all of the money available, that a student in this day and age can not afford to attend college, particularly if the student can demonstrate a financial need," said Pat Jaramillo, UTPB vice president of student services.

The total financial aid award at UTPB will include the TEXAS grant as well as other funding sources and could cover all tuition and fees for qualified students. To be considered for financial aid at UTPB, students must first submit an application for federal financial aid.

In an effort to help students who have already applied for financial aid or admissions at UTPB take full advantage of the TEXAS grant, Financial Aid Director Bob Vasquez is notifying students by mail of the opportunity to apply for the grant.

"It's important to us at UTPB to go the extra mile in helping our students capitalize on this opportunity," said Vasquez.

The amount an individual receives through the TEXAS Grant, according to information from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, will depend on the number of hours taken by the college student and the type of institution which the student attends.

Classes at UTPB begin Aug. 26. Students new to the University must be admitted before enrolling for classes. For more information on admission or how to take advantage of the financial aid opportunities, call the Office of Admissions at 915-552-2605.

GED Testing planned

GED testing will be held from 5-9 p.m., Monday, Aug. 9 and Tuesday, Aug. 10.

Registration will be held Friday, Aug. 6, from 6-7:30 p.m., at the Pecos High School Counselor's Office.

For more information call Michelle Workman at 447-7229, after July 26.
